Greetings, thousands of new and newish members. If you’re new to keto, it may be confusing just to get your head around some of the abbreviations we use here to save us hours of time typing and fighting with our auto-correct. I’d like to start you off with a cheat sheet of frequently used acronyms. Maybe someone can help translate some of these into foreign languages, like Australian and Proper English. -)

  • 2KD - 2 Keto Dudes

  • 16/8 or 20/4 - refers to intermittent fasting where you restrict your eating to the shorter time frame and fast for the remainder (so 20/4 would mean you eat all of your daily calories within a 4 hour period and fast for the remaining 20)

  • A1/A2 - refers to types of beta casein protein found in cow’s milk. There is some question whether milk with only A2 might be better for humans.

  • ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar

  • BF - bodyfat, usually as a percentage

  • BG - blood glucose

  • BK - blood ketones

  • BMI - Body Mass Index

  • BMR - basal metabolic rate

  • BPC - Bulletproof Coffee. A concoction made by blending coffee with unconventional fats like HWC, butter, coconut oil and/or MCT oil. Also called Keto Coffee, because “Bulletproof” is a brand name by Dave Asprey.

  • BYOB - Bring Your Own Butter (or Bacon, or Beef) - reminder that some restaurants or other places aren’t 100% keto friendly, so having some butter, bacon, or beef on hand can help avoid bad choices when you’re in a pinch.

  • CICO - calories in calories out

  • CKD - Cyclical Ketogenic Diet

  • CR - Calorie Restriction

  • DM2 - type-2 diabetes mellitus

  • EF - extended fasting (not required to be keto, but may be helpful eventually)

  • FBG - Fasting Blood Glucose

  • GCBC - Good Calories, Bad Calories - a book written by Gary Taubes

  • GKI - the ratio of glucose to ketones in your blood at any given time. Very useful for ketonians who are dealing with medical issues like cancer. (Added)

  • HDL - high-density lipoproteins (the ‘good’ cholesterol).

  • HIIT - high intensity interval training

  • HWC - heavy whipping cream. Also very #boring.

  • HSL - Hormone Sensitive Lipase, an enzyme that liberates fatty acids from body fat and inhibited by the presence of Insulin

  • IANAD - I Am Not A Doctor

  • IDDM - Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

  • IDM = Intensive Dietary Management (web site/program managed by Dr. Jason Fung - https://idmprogram.com)

  • IF - intermittent fasting (not required to be keto, but may happen spontaneously when you least expect it)

  • IIFYM - if it fits your macros - Macros = macronutients: carbs, protein, fat (and alcohol)

  • IK = Impulsive Keto

  • IMO - in my opinion

  • IMHO - in my humble opinion

  • IMNSHO - in my not so humble opinion

  • IOW - In Other Words

  • IR - insulin resistance

  • IS - insulin sensitive

  • KCKO! - keep calm and keto on! The default thing to do when you don’t know what else to do. Also a congratulatory term for keto successes.

  • KCFO! - keep calm and fast on!

  • Keto coffee - see BPC (Bulletproof Coffee)

  • LCHF - low carb high (and healthy) fat. Can be not-keto but keto is LCHF.

  • LCHFMP - Low Carb, High Fat, Moderate Protein

  • LDL - low-density lipoproteins (the ‘bad’ cholesterol).

  • LPL - Lipoprotein Lipase. An enzyme that pulls fatty acids from the blood stream and stores them in body fat.

  • Loop - see Loop. (Bad programmer joke).

  • Macros / Macronutrients - The percentages (or weights in grams) of the proportions of carbs, fat and protein in your foods. Trackers such as MFP (other trackers are available) help you keep track of your goals.

  • MCT - medium chain triglycerides. Ketogenic fats that go directly to the liver via the portal vein.

  • MFP - MyFitnessPal (food tracking app)

  • NSV - non-scale victory. The scale is a lying liar who lies. Tell it to shutup when you know you’re seeing other keto benefits, then share your story with us. #ketoproblems - humorous anecdotes from the annals of keto history. Stuff of which legends are made. #boringketo - descrptions of the terrible hardships we have to endure at meal time. Often accompanied by explicit food porn pictures. Like steak. Big juicy ribeye steak. With lobster and butter. Mmmmm… buuutter…

  • N=1 - Experimentation involving 1 subject, usually myself.

  • OMAD - one meal a day

  • OMEOD - one meal every other day

  • PISS - Post Induction Stall Syndrome (a.k.a. OMG why did I stop losing weight this week?)

  • PUFA/MUFA - poly/monounsaturated fatty acids. Components of various cooking oils. PUFAs include essential omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which should be consumed in equal but small amounts and are used as cellular construction materials; they are most susceptible to oxidation (becoming rancid). Body fat is about 50% MUFAs and 50% SFAs, a ratio that is in a 50/50 mix of olive oil and butter. [This content gleaned from Dr Phinney’s books and videos.]

  • SAD - Standard American Diet, also Seasonal Affective Disorder

  • SO - Significant Other

  • SWD - Standard Western Diet, often used interchangeably with Standard American Diet (SAD)

  • SF/SFA - saturated fats / saturated fatty acids

  • Shark Week = ladies’ monthly cycle - can be rather vicious the first few months on keto!

*SO - significant other; spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend.

  • SV - scale victory

  • T2D/T2DM - type-2 diabetes mellitus

  • TL;DR - too long, didn’t read, or too lazy, didn’t read. Shorthand to indicate that a passage appeared to be too long to invest the time to digest.

  • TOFI - thin outside, fat inside

  • TOM - Time of Month (ladies’ monthly cycle)

  • WoE - Way of Eating. (i.e. - The Ketogenic WoE)

  • WOL - Way of Life (Living)

  • YMMV - your mileage may vary. A disclaimer that you may have different response than me to the same thing. Also expressed as “We are all individual snowflakes.”

  • ZC - Zero Carb. In practice, means “Zero Plants” and not literally “zero carbohydrates”

Please add all Acronyms relating to food or even tests for that matter, anything you like relating to Leto, maybe create your own universal one. I’m new and stumbling across conversations without any idea lol.

I will start with an example - WTF is HWC?

Thanks in advance and sorry for trying to keep it simple :thinking::thinking:

(Ward Hrabar) #4

ZC= Zero Carbs?

(Mark Anthony Spiteri) #5

@Rarbs I know it can be overwhelming so to answer your question:

HWC = Heavy Whipping Cream
And yes ZC = Zero Carb

But if you want a more complete list have a look here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/DittoDan/view/blog-10-keto-abbreviations-acronyms-terminology-698398

Hope that helps

WOE way of eating

BMR basic metabolic rate

FBG is fasting blood glucose

WOL Way of Life (Living)

LCHFMP Low Carb, High Fat, Moderate Protein

And thanks to the commenters who contributed to the list. It looks quite intimidating at first. And sometimes we just make shit up as we go along, too.

(Brian Miller) #8

Thanks…great to have a place to refresh myself on some of the basic acronyms again.

(Tom Seest) #9

I’m not sure I got all of them, but I tried to…

(ManMythLegend) #10

I work in medicine and deal with weird acronyms daily. In the medical facilities where I work (Arizona, USA), type 2 diabetes is abbreviated “DM2”.

I’ve made this topic by @Rarbs into a wiki that anyone can update and edit.

Thank you for this. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what some of these abbreviations mean. When I guess wrong there is a change in the intent of the sentence.
