Greetings, thousands of new and newish members. If you’re new to keto, it may be confusing just to get your head around some of the abbreviations we use here to save us hours of time typing and fighting with our auto-correct. I’d like to start you off with a cheat sheet of frequently used acronyms. Maybe someone can help translate some of these into foreign languages, like Australian and Proper English. -)

2KD - 2 Keto Dudes

16/8 or 20/4 - refers to intermittent fasting where you restrict your eating to the shorter time frame and fast for the remainder (so 20/4 would mean you eat all of your daily calories within a 4 hour period and fast for the remaining 20)

A1/A2 - refers to types of beta casein protein found in cow’s milk. There is some question whether milk with only A2 might be better for humans.

ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar

ADF - Alternate Day Fasting - eat one day fast the next, repeat.

AF - Arbitrary Fasting - Randomly deciding to skip a Meal because you aren’t hungry.

BAT - Brown Adipose Tissue

BF - bodyfat, usually as a percentage

BG - blood glucose

BK - blood ketones

BMI - Body Mass Index

BMR - basal metabolic rate

BPC - Bulletproof Coffee. A concoction made by blending coffee with unconventional fats like HWC, butter, coconut oil and/or MCT oil. “Bulletproof” is a brand name by Dave Asprey.

BYOB - Bring Your Own Butter (or Bacon, or Beef) - reminder that some restaurants or other places aren’t 100% keto friendly, so having some butter, bacon, or beef on hand can help avoid bad choices when you’re in a pinch.

GKI - the ratio of glucose to ketones in your blood at any given time. Very useful for ketonians who are dealing with medical issues like cancer. (Added)

HDL - high-density lipoproteins (the ‘good’ cholesterol).

HIIT - high intensity interval training

HSL - Hormone Sensitive Lipase, an enzyme that liberates fatty acids from body fat and inhibited by the presence of Insulin

Keto coffee - A concoction made with coffee and a mix of both fats and proteins to keto fat:protein ratios.

LCHF - low carb high (and healthy) fat. Can be not-keto but keto is LCHF.

LCHFMP - Low Carb, High Fat, Moderate Protein

LDL - low-density lipoproteins (the ‘bad’ cholesterol).

LPL - Lipoprotein Lipase. An enzyme that pulls fatty acids from the blood stream and stores them in body fat.

Loop - see Loop. (Bad programmer joke).

Macros / Macronutrients - The percentages (or weights in grams) of the proportions of carbs, fat and protein in your foods. Trackers such as MFP (other trackers are available) help you keep track of your goals.

MCT - medium chain triglycerides. Ketogenic fats that go directly to the liver via the portal vein.

MFP - MyFitnessPal (food tracking app)

NSV - non-scale victory. The scale is a lying liar who lies. Tell it to shutup when you know you’re seeing other keto benefits, then share your story with us.

PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PKD - palaeolithic ketogenic diet

PSMF - protein sparing modified fast

PUFA/MUFA - poly/monounsaturated fatty acids. Components of various cooking oils. PUFAs include essential omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which should be consumed in equal but small amounts and are used as cellular construction materials; they are most susceptible to oxidation (becoming rancid). Body fat is about 50% MUFAs and 50% SFAs, a ratio that is in a 50/50 mix of olive oil and butter. [This content gleaned from Dr Phinney’s books and videos.]
