Dr. Darren Schmidt: Science of Apple Cider Vinegar ACV

(Bunny) #10

Hmmm?

Good golly, lost in jolly, how merry we be!

The thought here and lack of insight, is we are only thinking in the terms of apples from a tree? Vinegar (firmentation) does not only come from apples! Apple Cider Vinegar gets a lot of attention and steals the limelight in the dissonance of the universal glitz mostly attributed to modern day abundance!

Fermentation enhances and compliments mammalian physiochemistry (one of many factors) that can counter some of the the recent decline in nutrient values through the past let’s say 300 years e.g. other factors like omega PUFA ratios, ground soil quality etc…

I expect it’s this book. I am in the UK and it was widely available about 30 years ago

(Duane Hewitt) #12

To be fair he did refer to the book the doctor published titled “Vermont Folk Medicine”.

His video did spur me to search the literature and I have a crafted a post on my blog about vinegar biochemistry.

Beautifully executed!

Until someone can explain, mechanistically, how ACV works and how it is different from other fermented vinegars or products, I’m skeptical.

(Bunny) #16

Type does not differ or matter other than the vital importance of unprocessed organic mother (floaters) in ACV or whatever fermented substances one chooses to put in their body…

(Ginger) #17

So is he suggesting that you can get into ketosis with ACV alone, irrelevant of carbohydrate? He really seems to be saying that ACV causes ketosis. Well he says ACV is ketosis but i’m thinking that its just his turn of phrase and he doesn’t mean that literally?

Has anyone found that ACV increases their ketone blood level? Is that a thing? I’ve heard that it can help to increase insulin sensitivity or helps balance glucose levels but not that it raises ketones so would be interesting to hear if anyone has been testing that.

If he’s saying that, he’s beyond the science of the Krebs cycle and ketone metabolism. Glucose and insulin above a certain baseline will prevent the creation of ketones.

I’ve just attended a recent lecture on this. Good info :rabbit2:.

Once a day? How much ACV?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #21

I’m curious enough to test. I don’t get very high levels. How much and how often.

(Troy) #22

Sure …np

All approx
Some may use less than me
Ymmv

Drink at night , around 8-10pm
1tbsp ACV
1tbsp lemon juice
Dash of cinnamon
Dash of ginger powder
Dash of turmeric
-Occasionally liquid vanilla creme stevia or clear, amount of drops vary
Ice
Around 10-12oz of water
Stir
Drink through a straw - A MUST

Gargle/rinse w warm water after
Sometimes twice
Wait about 30-40 before brushing

Then sleep like a baby:grin::joy:

Thanks!

As to ACV, I’m skeptical. Eat keto, be fine.

According to Ben Bikman, .5 for nutritional ketosis is actually an arbitrary line. He talked with Phinney or Volek about it, and it’s a pretty arbitrary line. So, maybe .3 is okay. Maybe .1 is okay. It’s wonky and fairly novel tech.

As they used to say when pee strips were all we had, it’s not about a deep color or a mild color. Any color is adequate.

I for one am happy to keep a bottle of that magic elixir at my desk and home. I know it makes my tummy happy.

I’m also happy that @atomicspacebunny does yeoman’s work collecting data like she does. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

(Sami Kearns) #26

Dumb question here…what I get from Dr Schmidt’s video is that ACV raises blood ketone levels. Doesn’t this equate to exogenous ketones? As opposed to forcing the body to make it’s own ketone bodies???

What am I missing here?

(Wendy) #27

No because it’s your body making them just like fasting or keeping your carbs low enough.
Is it true though? I have read that acv seems to lower insulin, perhaps that is how it “makes” ketones?

(Bunny) #28

Technical answer: If you put two 2x acetic acid molecules together you get DIACETIC ACID or ACETOCETIC ACID or 1 of 3 ketone bodies!

image

In other words it helps (IGF-1-hepatic) with the formation and production of endogenous ketones from your own body fat or dietary fats, not by any stretch of the imagination is that an introduction of ‘exogenous ketones’ into the body!

@atomicspacebunny and @Happyheart
Thanks so much for the replies and explanations. They’re very helpful.

I have been drinking my water with ACV with the mother for over 10 years. I am overweight but that is primarily due to me being a chocoholic. :grinning: I should be diabetic with what I eat. I just had bloodwok done and the doctor was amazed at how good my cholesterol was. I also don’t get heartburn. So I would have to say the ACV is a good deal. Plus it makes the awful tap water taste better.
