1 Week Bone Broth Fast + Exogenous Ketones

(Mitch Myser) #1

For many reasons, I am going to do a one week bone broth fast. During this process, I want to remain in ketosis, so I will be taking ketones. My question is: how many ketones should I take to remain in ketosis? The pills give 4000mg of ketones. Will that be enough or should I take more?

Why do you think you need the exogenous ketones in order to stay in ketosis? If you’re fasting with only bine broth, then you’re either in ketosis or dead.

(Mandy) #3

This.

I do bone broth fasts often. Not sure I understand the need for extra oral ketones. I’m always heavily in ketosis while bone broth fasting. No oral ketones needed.

The body naturally produces ketones when there is no glucose available for fuel. On a fast where your not supplying fuel, the body will automatically go in ketosis and remain there until another fuel source other than your body fat is provided. No needs for extra ketones.

Is it possible that a bone broth fast might provide too much protein for reliable ketosis?

(TJ Borden) #6

If its one of the new brands out and not homemade and you drink enough, it could be enough calories to negate the fast, but you’d have to drink a LOT to get knocked out of ketosis.

(Ron) #7

I don’t believe you could drink enough volume, let alone fast enough to accomplish being kicked out. The amount consumed over a period of time would be dispersed at such small levels that demand from the body wouldn’t be met and the body would still have to draw from other sources.

Hi there, reasonably new to fasting but really enjoying the experimentation. Can I ask you what your main aim is with a bone broth fast?
Cheers

Well, it’s been covered that you’ll likely stay in ketosis but, what is your goal with the bone broth?

it would be ludicrous to take exogenous ketones during a fast. however if you are drinking bone broth its not a fast. fasting by definition is not taking in any calories.

flooding your blood stream with exogenous ketones is the most surefire way to inhibit your own production of ketones, since the presence of ketones in your blood send signals to down regulate the production of them.

I would ask myself, why am I trying to achieve Ketosis?

Never could understand the need for exogenous ketones unless you have a serious need for energy like a triathlon? Those exogenous ketones are not coming from endogenous fat, however that does not mean you will not burn fat, but surprisingly you will also burn fat even if your not in Ketosis. In ancient time, if you were a diabetic which was very rare, you were revered as an Oracle to your people!

Diabetic Urine the Laplander’s Piss = Exogenous Ketones?

“…No one’s quite sure where it arose first—Siberia, Greenland, Alaska, Lapland. What they do know is that these societies revered the type 1 diabetic, a rare find in the pre-contact Arctic. Using an admittedly grisly and cruel process, these groups would starve the tribe’s diabetic to induce ketoacidosis, harvest the ketone-rich urine, and reduce it slowly to a ketone-rich tar over a wood fire. Tribe shamans would dissolve the tar in pine needle tea and distribute it to members exclusively before hunting trips, warfare, and any other activity requiring optimal physical and mental function to boost energy and improve performance. As Mark Twain famously quipped, “The strongest coffee I ever had was a Laplander’s piss.” …More

I would rather make it out of my own urine than give big ketopharma one dime$$$ Don’t be fooled, It’s a big time rip off! If your going to spend your hard earned cash on pee pee, you might as well flush hundred dollar bills down the toilet?

I watched an interview with Jason Fung, MD (via the YouTube channel of High Intensity Health, a Ketogenic Diet channel) all about fasting. During the interview he said that taking bone broth during a fast negates some of the positive benefits of that fast because of the protein in it. I’ve included the link (it’s an hour long but really informative; I’ve just started fasting and listened to this before I started).

It would be a shame to go to the trouble of fasting to find the protein in the bone broth had prevented you from gaining some of the benefits!

I’m very new to keto… A month in. Fasts for me aren’t super easy for long periods yet. I use bone broth as a crutch right now when I’m not starving but notice I need salt. Basically for me it’s fasting training wheels.

(Maz) #14

I did much the same and it was very helpful. I went to a big lunch only and then bone broth as dinner at work. Completed a 30 hour fast with it. Am now 24 hours into a 48 hour fast and decided to go with out it. Am doing black coffee and water. Pretty comfortable so far.
