Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to lose weight

Try following a keto meal plan, there are some good free ones, this is from I Breathe I’m Hungry, include recipes, shopping lists etc.

Atkins.com still has free Atkins 20 for foodies and Atkins 40 for foodies, again what to eat and shopping lists. I have used both and as long as you don’t do the shakes and bars mentioned for snacks from Atkins, it will work for getting you into ketosis. It does take some longer than others to get there, If you have been ill, your body is healing from that, illness results in high cortisone levels that alone can keep you from losing.

I try not to consume sugar alcohols, that is why I never use bars and shakes anymore.

Cut out the snacks. Check into intermittent fasting. Look up Dr Fung on You Tube.

Dr Fung is a firm believer in no snacks and 1 2 or 3 meals a day. He feels that eating many smaller meals keeps your insulin stimulated and people don’t lose weight.

He uses as an example the 1950s in America. The people would eat 3 Squares a day. If a child asked Mom for a snack she’d say “it’ll ruin your appetite”. People just weren’t as fat as they are today.

He feels that the real cause of obesity is tied into hormones and insulin. If you just ate one meal for dinner and fasted 24 hours you’d lose weight.

At the least If you cut out lunch and just ate Breakfast and Dinner it’s very possible that would have the same effect.

BTW I’ve been Extended fasting and following Keto at least 5 days of the week and I’ve lost 20LB in the past month. I’m 100 LB overweight so I’m at the point where my body wants to lose and it’s easier.

The reality though is that I do alot of cheating on my Fast Days but all Keto. So I’m following more of an intermittent fasting type of regimen. I like to say that if I shoot for the stars I just might reach the moon. IE I shoot for extended fasting and end up with intermittent. As opposed to shooting for Keto and ending up not following and not losing weight. There is a method to my madness.

It seems that at least one or 2 days a week I eat whatever I want and have been feasting on whatever I want. For some reason this weekend though I’m breaking that mold and keeping on a fast through the weekend. Guess it takes time to ease into a new lifestyle. As long as I continue to lose around 4 LB a week I’m not going to worry.

Again I strongly suggest that you look up Dr Fung on you tube and watch some of his lectures. He’s an Nephrologist and a real Dr. Everything that he says is backed up by Scientific Studies and what he’s observed in his practice.

If what you are doing isn’t working than you need to investigate different paths. I think that’s why you posted here.

Eating out is tricky. Chicken “sticks” suggests breading. Maybe flour. Siracha sauce can have sugar 1 g per tsp.
When eating out watch appetizers. Choose plain meats grilled, and simple salads.

I checked the siracha sauce in my fridge and sugar was high on the ingredient list. We threw out the siracha and now use a chili garlic sauce without any form of sugar on the ingredient list. When we eat out we ask for chili oil these days. There are ways for the sugar to creep in. I find that I do better if I keep it out of everything, even if the carb count and sugar count is low to 0.

I stalled and actually gained 8 pounds a few weeks ago. I got back to very clean eating, took a good look at my proteins (I was eating more than I needed) and increased my fats. I am happy to report that I have started losing again.

Don’t be afraid to up your fats and decrease your proteins if need be. It may work for you or it may not. I have found that works for me for now.:grinning:

Fascinating stuff to know for keto:

The Microbiome and Digestion

”…As mentioned above propionate, acetate and butyrate are all examples of SCFA produced by bacterial fermentation (e.g. additionally supplementing organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar ACV?) of insoluble fiber from plant sources. It has been discovered that the majority of individuals with a healthy gut maintain 3 dominant bacterial phyla: Bacteroidetes, Firmucutes and Actinobacteria. However in 2006 researchers at the Washington University school of medicine discovered that obese people had less of Bacteroidetes (Bactericides) than Firmicutes so scientists have the notion that transplanting a gut flora with the ratio reversed i.e more Bacteroides less Firmicutes could be an answer to reversing obesity (in sugar burner terms?•) and it appears to work in mice? …” …More

Note: like placing turbo boosters on weight loss when in Ketosis (increased utilization of HGH; IGF etc.)…

What this really means: The shikimate pathway (shikimic acid pathway) is a seven step metabolic route used by bacteria, fungi, algae, some protozoan parasites and plants for the biosynthesis of folates and aromatic amino acids (phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan). …More = NAD+ NADH

Sriracha is about 20% sugar (looking at the label on the bottle I have in the fridge). 1g of sugar for every 5g of sauce.
I should have given mine to my niece when I offloaded all of my carb-rich foods.

(Bacon for the Win) #29

Trader Joe’s has a bit less sugar and I believe there is a recipe for a Sriracha knock off either in a Whole30 book or a Well Fed book.

Found it: W30 Sriracha
I have not run this through an app to calculate macros since we use so little of it.

(Steve) #30

Heh…if there was a Keto-friendly version of Sriracha, I’d likely use it as a ketchup replacement.
Thanks for the link!! I’ll have a look!!

Not at first, while you’re learning, but you’ll be able to go out later. You can find lots of hints & tips on what to choose from a menu (and what to ask for that’s NOT on the menu) if you use the search engine here on the forums. Look for “eating out” or “restaurants” and you’ll find loads.

And that was water weight; it should come off quickly if you are strict keto.

Not carb-y pancakes, keto ones. There are recipes that use nothing but eggs and cream cheese, resulting in a crepe-like pancake, and then there are @Brenda Zorn’s pork rind pancakes - the closest to regular pancakes I’ve found. I top them with lots of butter, or a combo of melted butter & Walden Farms pancake syrup & butter 50:50 if I want some “sweet.”

(Justin Jordan) #34

I’ve found almond flour pancakes to be pretty great. It depends on what you’re looking for in a pancake, but they’re indistinguishable (and I tried them on keto folks) from some kinds of regular pancakes.

(The some kinds is important - they’re pretty dense, so light and fluffy is not what they do. You could probably monkey with the recipe to get them lighter and fluffier, but I prefer hearty)

(Steve) #35

Ok, calculated the macros - it’s considerably less carbs, but still more than the sugar-free Ketchup (which I’m pretty sure is 1g / tablespoon).

Here’s the specifics:

Sriracha recipe:
Yield, 2.5 Cups

1.5lb (681g) chopped red jalapeños - 204 calories, 4.4g Fat, 21g Carbs, 9.2g Protein, 4.9mg Sodium, 1464.2mg Potassium
8 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed - 34 calories, 7.4g Carbs, 1.6g Protein, 4mg Sodium, 96mg Potassium
⅓ C apple cider vinegar - 17 calories, .7g Carbs, 4mg Sodium, 43.8mg Potassium
3T tomato paste - 30 calories, 4g Carbs, 2g Protein, 30mg Sodium, 420mg Potassium
1 large dried Medjool date, pitted - 66 calories, 0 Fat, 16.4g Carbs, 0.4g Protein, 0.2mg Sodium, 167mg Potassium
2T Red Boat fish sauce - 12.8 calories, 3.4g Protein, 1268.2mg Sodium
1.5 tsp (9g) kosher salt - 3486mg Sodium

Total: 364 calories, 4.4g Fat, 50g Carbs, 16.6g Protein, 4797mg Sodium, 2191mg Potassium

2.5C = 40 tablespoons
1T = 9.1 calories, 0.11g Fat, 1.25g Carbs, 0.42g Protein, 120mg Sodium, 55mg Potassium

Huy Fong Foods, Inc Sriracha (Rooster) - 1tsp (5g) - 5 calories, 1g Carbs, 80mg Sodium
Then 1T - 15 calories, 3g Carbs, 240mg Sodium

(Candy Lind) #36

You can drop this 16.4 g of carb & use stevia or sucralose (or whatever sweetener you prefer) instead. The only reason for the date was to have a Whole30 approved sweetener.

(Steve) #37

Awesome!! That will drop the carbs by a third - making it even less than Ketchup!!!

Ok…going to have to find a good source for red jalapeños.

I’ve lost 1Ib in two weeks this time and I’m gutted but I’ve lost so many inches blotting reduced flat tummy I don’t understand why I’m not loosing cooking with only coconut oil lots of fatty meat like lamb and salami and making cream cheese spinach really disappointed :weary:

(LeeAnn Brooks) #39

I’m confused. You’re losing inches but you’re still upset you haven’t lost weight?

Isn’t the point to be smaller? Lost inches = smaller.

If I end up a size 4 weighing more than what I did last time I wore the same clothes, does it really matter?

You’re losing body mass, regardless of weight. If all you want is to lose weight, you need only move to a higher elevation as weight is simply a result of the gravitational pull on an object. Mass is size.

(Sammi) #40

Agreed inches = smaller but it’s different this time around and I don’t no why I feel my foods are stalling me this time as I now have one BPC in the morning on none fasting days and eat more meat snack on olives and cheese strings and last time I lost 10Ib in 6 weeks I was heavier starting at 10 stone 3 before - this time I started at 9:12 and I’ve lost a pound first time I’ve fasted too started on two days full fasting Monday and Thursday, now I’m fasting 8pm-12pm do you agree with the fasting I’m a little disappointed and confused by this due to my results I’m not seeing a benefit.
