I am in week 3 of the keto diet and I used a teaspoon of MCT oil in my coffee. In the middle of the night, I woke up with excruciating abdominal pain. I only used a teaspoon because it said it could cause GI upset, not excruciating abdominal pain. Has anyone experienced the same thing?
MCT Oil
That has not happened to me. I didn’t try MCT oil until I had been keto for a few months. In my first few months I ate a LOT of coconut milk, so I figure that must have conditioned me somewhat to deal with MCT oil. When I first took about a tablespoon, over a few hours at work mixed with tea, I did have digestive issues, but not pain like you described. Since then I moderated the rate at which I consume it and haven’t had any issues.
This is VERY common with mct oil. I would start with 1/4 teaspoon and work your way up
Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate it, as I am still new to all this.
What about using a good quality coconut oil instead of MCT oil — would that make a difference?
You would have disaster pants if anything and most likely within 2 hours after consumption. The pain I think sounds like something else like your gallbladder. This would not be caused by the MCT oil since your body does not need bile to digest it. Some MCT oils are harder on your gut. I have a lot of friends who use cheap C8 C10 C12 blends that they got on amazon and have problems with them. Some find that a pure C8 is better.
Thanks for the information. I’m using the brand from Sports Research. Is there anything that would not be compatible with this oil? Say for example, ingredients I’m putting in my coffee? I use Silk unsweetened almond milk, liquid stevia drops, and Torani sugar free flavoring. I’m just wondering if one of these ingredients may have clashed with the MCT oil. I’m definitely going to give it another try.
What kind of pain did you have and how long after ingested did it happen?
Hi Stacy,
I bought some MCT oil but I just don’t bother. I just eat raw coconut oil. I am not much inclined to ingest more highly processed products when there are simple, low engineering content alternatives.
Keto for Life!

Same here. I have been putting coconut oil in my coffee every morning for the past three years. On occasion I have had a little too much and got a bit of stomach upset, but I know how much to use now. It makes me feel great for hours.
If someone is having issues with the MCT oil I would suggest they try coconut oil and see if that resolves it.
sharp pain from upper left to upper right across front of abdomen - has not happened since, although I haven’t tried the MCT oil again (yet) either. It was several hours after I drank the coffee with the MCT oil in it, as it was about 4am when it woke me up out of sound sleep. I ended up drinking a bottle of water and after a short time, the pain was less intense and slowly went away.
Eeeks that sounds awful. I’m with @FatMan- I could eat coconut oil out of the jar- I think it tastes amazing. I put it in my coffee or cocoa with butter and HWC. I also have several stomach and intestinal issues- I’m glad I didn’t buy any MCT oil- sounds like I would be losing a ton of weight in the bathroom…
Are you blending the oil with the coffee? If so, might I recommend some options to alleviate the stress and add a bit of density to your coffee:
- Giving MCT oil powder a try. It’s less of a stress on the digestive system, and gives a nice, creamy texture to the drink (This is my favourite brand, which I use daily: http://a.co/fGCZtaJ). This is easily one of my top recommendations.
- Adding an egg- Adds body, but you have to be quick to blend the coffee so it doesn’t start cooking once it’s in the coffee
- Collagen powder (unflavored or chocolate options are on Amazon)- another good option to add body to the coffee
4.Heavy Cream; or if you like to stay away from dairy, coconut cream (so decadent!) - Cacao butter- This is a recent favorite of mine, which smells and tastes amazing.
- Cocoa powder
OR - Make a coffee cocktail of a few of these options! My daily coffee in the morning is:
-1Tbsp MCT oil
-2 scoops of MCT oil Powder
-1Tbsp cacao butter
It’s all about experimentation and finding out what works for you and what you want your coffee to taste like.
Good luck!
Bulletproof coffee or what else
I am thinking you were just dehydrated. Plus since you have not had any problems since.
Interesting, I use from one to two generous tablespoons of coconut oil in my coffee every morning for the past couple of months now. I never have any upset tummy issues. I also include about 1 tblsp of butter or ghee when I have it. Sometimes it tastes a bit bitter, and I’m not sure what’s causing it as sometimes it’s not bitter at all.
Egg in coffee??? I think I need to research that one. Makes me think of an egg drop soup, only coffee flavored.
Coconut oil powder?!?! That is something I think I need to get. I do miss the slightly thicker coffee created with a non dairy creamer like the typical coffee section in the stores makes.
