MARCH 2019 IF/EF Chat ALL WELCOME

Similar to my experience with it the other week. Monday fasted fine, Tues fed, Weds fasted fine, Thurs fed… Fri meant to be fasted, but got to lunchtime and felt awful so had food.

I’m trying to think of fasting as an extra and to be flexible about it. It’s just frustrating not being successful. The first priority is keeping my carbs low and that’s all fine. I have zero issues with TRE and skip breakfast without a thought every day. I don’t have a health crisis that I need to fix with fasting. Fasting for me means boosting my weight loss a bit and some benefits of autophagy. Getting a rhythm going with a two to three fasting days every week might take a while, but not doing it is not going to hurt me in the meantime.

Holy phantom hunger Batman! It is like my body is rebelling as every time I have to go near food for my kids my body wants me to eat something.

Went shopping in my attic for old, old clothes today and as I was trying on I realized I seriously need autophagy. I need to refresh on the science on how best to do this. It is time to get serious about doing this while I still have adequate fat stores to support some longer fasts.

Going to pick up a pi day dinner for my kids that I can’t eat and I don’t have to cook for better success tonight. Once I knuckle through past bedtime I should be golden.

Made it to bedtime and beyond without eating! Now it should be smooth sailing til lunch or later.
Edit to add: Broke the fast at breakfast. Still calling it a win! The stress of timing the best way to break was pretty high.

If I’m going to happy hour at 6:30, when is the latest I should refeed? Planning to get either a meat and cheese plate to share with the other ladies or seared Ahi tuna (+/- salad depending on their choices) along with a glass of dry red wine. I often crash after meals if they aren’t composed perfectly, and I’m worried about doing that on my way home from co-op… maybe better to eat at home even though I think my meal is safe? The happy hour choices are safe for me as far as post-meal crashing goes.

My blood glucose had been around 80 most of the time that it wasn’t disrupted by eating (I go lower. not higher, after eating) but yesterday after I finally found my meter after the kids went to bed I was 67 & 63. Woke up as 76 with dawn effect. Not a diabetic, but it is in my family and I would wager good money that I’m insulin resistant.

I haven’t done a lot of EF but here goes: I break my fast with a cup of bone broth that has some fat in it. I wait 20 to 30 minutes and eat a few plain pork rinds dipped in sour cream. Wait 20 to 30 mins more and if the intestines are not hollering I start to eat but I take it slow.

I’ve not had wine shortly after breaking a fast. I would imagine the buzz is greater.

Let us know how it goes.

Oh, I do make a point of not breaking a fast eating out unless my fast has been short (<32 hrs).

(Door Girl) #106

Thanks Eric. That same concern has me breaking fast with breakfast. 36 hours is a pretty good go, and I’m excited to do a longer one next week. I need a longer horizon to fight through the phantom hunger, the idea of battling it all morning to try to find an optimal time to break was super stressful.

So happy I made it sleep to sleep fasted. Know I know I can do it, and I’ll pick a more conducive time for the next one.

unexpected farewall luncheon at work…
I really slipped hard.

I want to see if I can manage to dive right into a 24h fast.
With my zumba class tomorrow morning that should deplete my liver of that glucose quite a bit I hope, and I have time to break the fast just right before leaving for my date.

(Herb Martin) #108

Good for you.

If you are ‘diving right in’, what sort of fasting experience do you have?

(I came for the weight loss and stayed for my sanity... ) #109

I usually have to bite through a mean energyslump due to a smaller reactive hypoglycimia (hope to reduce that with the ACV I had right after the meal.

Going to skip dinner and breakfast tomorrow. water, tea, coffee…

Sometimes I get mean hungerpangs after having carbage, sometimes i don’t we’ll see what happens.

Day 9 of water fast

Data:

  • Glucose 70, Ketones 6.1
  • GKI 0.71 (best I’ve measured) , DrBozRatio 11.5
  • Lost 21.5 lbs in 8.5 days, 71.5 overall.
  • Body fat 28
  • Just 2.5 lbs from “not obese” by BMI (30.3 now).
BMI doesn’t really work for me since I am both truly big boned and athletically muscled, but it makes a nice milestone.
  • 66 years old.
  • 211 with a goal weight of about 172.5 (39-ish more)
  • Lean weight 152 (approximate theoretical 0-fat weight)

This is my best GKI, not hungry. Far more running around town yesterday than I’ve done in weeks or months yet weight loss slowed down. Not an issue, just data.

Before going on the fast I had made an appointment to meet one of my best friends that I haven’t seen in a while but then we moved it a week because he was busy.

WARNING: Fasting porn follows:
We met for lunch at Longhorn Steak House and because I was running late I called him and suggested he go ahead and order since I couldn’t eat.

Entering the steak house the rich aroma was spilling out the front door and as I sat down, his server place a magnificent looking ribeye tomahawk steak (giant rib bone like a handle) in front of him – and me.

Beautiful, delicious aroma, and he tucked into it obvious enjoying it as I ordered a diet soda (yes, I’ll drink a few diet drinks on a fast.)

No problem. Didn’t bother me a bit as we sat there for about an hour while he polished that beast off.

He’s into health and martial arts self-defense as I am so we talked about both dieting and staying safe in the world.

Best news: My wife’s new keto diet really got going with her BG at 101 and her ketone reaching her highest at 1.9 with a GKI at 2.95 which is reported to be “deep ketosis - therapeutic autophagy”

Because we only recently reversed her Type 2 Diabetes (the doctor stopped her Januvia) and she certainly has insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome still this is especially encouraging.

I am so happy for her success.

It is 10 am and I’m 46 hrs fasted and working towards 72. Woke up early due to ketone high and got 3 loads of laundry done, gym time, hot tub at the gym, gas for wife’s car (she is out of town) and did morning social media time and even got to work early.

Driving to work I had an oh no moment. Really an oh shit moment. Realized I had a dentist appt today at 2 and because of having some open heart surgery a long time ago I’m supposed to take 4 antibiotic pills before my appointment. Well, that had me think, no gut biome will be left at all. Refeeding will be awful. Lucky my dentist is casual about appt changes. No penalty. I really want to soldier through this fast to get more BG, Ketone readings and to push beyond my personal best of 54hrs.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #112

Herb thanks for the updates. I follow with much interest.

Great that the wife is onboard. My wife just started to be but went out of town to see her dad who is in hospice. I hope she stayed away from really bad carb food but I won’t even mention anything about it when she returns because of the stress her and her siblings are under. Family is everything.

(I came for the weight loss and stayed for my sanity... ) #113

Dude, You are incredible… You have my full respect. I’ll try to take an example on you.

(Herb Martin) #114

Thanks for the kinds words.

Remember I am no hero, it’s easy for me for various reasons. I’ll stop when it isn’t working.

I have been a carnivore for 8+ months so I haven’t seen ANY CARBS.

Stepping into fasting from there is almost trivial, and as I have said in other posts, dropping from a fast into carnivore feels deliciously, luxuriously decadent.

(I came for the weight loss and stayed for my sanity... ) #115

More and more things are pushing me towards carnivore lately…
I am really just looking for that tiny piece to get the ball rolling…

One day it might just click and I’ll just do it.

(Andi loves space, bacon and fasting. ) #116

Maybe not, but you are very inspiring. :muscle: You are making me very much look forward to my next attempt at an EF. Also super happy to hear that your wife is doing well and has reversed her T2D :purple_heart:

(Andi loves space, bacon and fasting. ) #117

I can’t imagine how hard IF or EF would be if I had to cook for kids. You are a rock star for doing this!

#118

After a nice Seafood Feast last night, decided I will probably go ahead and skip dinner tonight and get in another Mini-Fast for this week. Presently coming up on 19 hrs., so will probably eat something tomorrow mid-day or so? Should put it somewhere around 42+ hrs. … But was also thinking at possibly getting in another 4 or 5 day EF next week, but a Wedding on Saturday may shorten that some? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

As to breaking a Fast… for me, it seems to be similar to Eric. That unless I go beyond 48 hrs., I don’t worry about it much. It’s usually Fast that exceed 2 days, is where I have to be more mindful of what I break with. … Normally, this is a small Salad with Olive Oil and a little dressing, then wait about 60 min. and eat a meal. But I do avoid those few things that seem to give most folks issues with breaking, such as Eggs, Nuts, etc. I also find that too much Fatty Meat will do this as well. (Namely the Fat content.)

Nice to hear everyone is Fasting along with no major issues. :+1: Hoping the warmer weather is helping with this as well. I know it’s helping here. It’s been so damp & dreary the past year, we need some sunny days to brighten not only the days, but the moods!

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #119

Went out and got 15 mins of sun yesterday and today. Yea. Rain coming later today for Central VA.

#120

Yeah, here too unfortunately. But the past couple days have been a nice change indeed.
