APRIL 2019 IF/EF Chat ALL WELCOME

So my wife Carol officially closed her first extended water fast at 85 hours, well into the 4th day. Final ketones 2.8 with GKI about 1.8

She was marvelous.

Mine are now ketone 3.1 and GKI at 1.7 – last 14 days fast my ketones just kept ramping up to 7+ before they seemed to level off.

Herb,

thanks for the details. It is helpful.

I wonder if I ought to bridge my time with some HWC ro fat in coffee when I fast. This in light of the fast that your ketones are up and GKI is down.

Or is it that Carol is the only one that is adding some bridge?

(I came for the weight loss and stayed for my sanity... ) #143

Thanks so much. I have done it before, (my record is a little over 120) but never since working out as hard as I do now. I don’t even get hungry, just easily irritable when I don’t get my hour of deep sleep. Which would be okay if my work life wouldn’t suck as much as it does…
I remember my first concert. Really cool you are taking your daughter. Mine never showed enough interest to do that!

Good to know it is helping someone – it was possible I was oversharing

Originally, it was just Carol, but I was giving that as advice to people and it occurred to me that I really was NOT trying to follow a “rule book” or “set a record” and started cautiously adding a little to my routine.

Her ketones were climbing faster than mine and she was boosting more, so the gave me confidence to try it.

Even though hunger was no big problem for me, I’ve had a bit of heavy cream in my coffee day as well as some SMALL MCT powder on days 3 & 4 – and ketones are still climbing.

If I can do a bit of boosting, for comfort and extending the fast while weight keeps dropping and ketones keep rising then I am going to push this a bit but warning that I have NO IDEA if this is going to work for me, much less you.

Eric, If you experiment along these lines (or anyone else) please share as much detail as you are able/willing.

Theoretically we might be stifling autophagy even with good numbers, but for now I am not trying to beat a cancer etc. and really care most about weight loss for the near future.

I have’t used any bone broth yet, but that was just an accident of my preferences for coffee cream and MCT shakes. Carol’s bone broth was supplemented with a small amount of MCT the last few days.

Same for me. I will soon want to try to stimulate autophagy but for now wt loss is the goal. My GKI will improve as my insulin resistance (IR) fades. My IR will fade more when my adipose fat is reduced.

I do want autophagy badly.

I told my wife last night: “The good news is I am losing belly fat now. The bad news is I’m going to start looking like an old man that used to be fat in a now small body.” My upper arms are drooping and so is my lower belly. Soon I will have a lot of loose skin. Of course she is fine with that, and for that I am glad.

I’ll keep you all posted if and when I try this. I don’t do a lot of BG/BHB mesurements because of cost.

(Herb Martin) #146

I am not having significant “skin” issues much even though I am down 70 lbs at the moment but I have 30-40 lbs more to go.

Also note, there is no guarantee that a good GKI will NOT enable autophagy even with a bit of nutrients, it’s just that we do not know what the result will be and have no definitive method to measure that.

The recent news that coffee stimulates autophagy on it’s own (in vivo) has led me to presume that coffee is NOT an issue and probably will assist in autophagy if anything.

Weight loss is my main goal, but…

Ditto.

I’m hoping that regular fasting and strength training during weight loss will deal with most of this and I’ll see where I am when I get to goal. I have flappy old lady arms, but I think that’s because I’m an old lady not because I have any significant weight loss yet.

FYI: Experts keep talking about autophagy for cleaning up extra skin etc. but I think that may be an incorrect assumption and goal.

Apoptosis (destruction of the ENTIRE cell) would seem to be necessary to recycle that extra skin, blood vessels, etc. & even the depleted, dessicated, but still remaining fat cells themselves.

The cells need to go away (apoptosis), not just the damaged mitochondria or other organelles within the cell (i.e., autophagy).

I’m pretty relaxed about how much fasting I need to do and whether I can drink broth, etc., because autophagy from fasting is more of a degree or scale than an either/or situation. Also, because from what I’d read of Walter Longo’s studies, they were giving people something like 500 calories a day on a fasting-mimicking diet rather than full fasting and still getting good results. More recently, I went back and re-read the Longo stuff and realized some of it is about apoptosis. He is also getting good results with his fasting-mimicking diet for that.

So, it sounds like we’re on the right track, either way.

Just finished a 48 hour Fast, first one I’ve done in a few months. I’ve been doing OMAD during the week and on weekends TMAD .

(The amazing autoimmune 🦄) #151

All your fasting is paying off in the numbers you have been putting up. :smiley:I just finished also having a bit of broth tonight and will eat tomorrow. I always feel more alive the second day.

(Alec) #152

Just ended my 14th 36hr fast in my 2nd stint at fasting/keto. Loving it, feeling great, losing weight, always feel better during a fast than after eating. But gotta eat at some point! :joy:

Bacon, eggs and butter do taste good after a fast, though!

(Virginia ) #153

Thanks. I had plan to do some longer Fast, but haven’t been able to… my stomach wouldn’t allow it …lol It was making all kinds of noise, been like that for a while now (ask @Digital_Dave) he would say is that you? … don’t know why. But I finally was able to get these 48 hrs in, which was long overdo. I hope you were able to have a good Fast with no problems.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #154

@Herb_Martin Dr Fung says no one that fasts with IDM needs surgery for skin removal. So maybe it is not so hard. Just fast.

(The amazing autoimmune 🦄) #155

No problemsthis week. I am careful about supplementing my minerals etc and eating foods that are nutrient dense. I did a two days then one day feasting and then two days of fasting again. I did so much because I am wanting to help my body recover from being weaned off of prednisone and other stuff.

Wanting to kick my adrenal gland into full gear. So I can have more energy.

#156

Yeah, I’d say. … Your stomach has been making all sorts of noises for the past couple months! … Told you that’s a good thing, meaning things are constantly moving through. … But hopefully with the weather getting warmer, you can put some more Fasting time in.

(Tamela Robinette) #157

Way to go V!!!

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #158

Yea Virginia.

(Mame) #159

50 hours into a planned 72 hour fast. First time in 2 months that fasting has felt enjoyable, perhaps due to the change in seasons? (Fasting was miserable all last month, struggled to get to 24 hours.)

Whatever the reason I am grateful for it. Loving the ‘light’ feeling. GKI today = 0.46

Loving this thread and feeling inspired.

(Herb Martin) #160

Nice GKI, way to go. Have fun and keep your electrolytes topped up.

I never was THAT low even on a 2-week fast.

Welcome to the thread!
