What's the difference between loose skin from weight loss and just plain ole loose skin from being 'older'?

(Running from stupidity) #21

IIRC, and I may not, last time I heard her/JF talk about this was in relation to 24-36 hr fasts, when after 24 hours your body starts breaking down the old proteins and disposing of them. Skin comes under this category.

Actually, I think JF mentions it here. (The audio isn’t great, and the hosts have some weird setup that REALLY aggressively ducks the audio of the guest when ever they make any kind of noise, so bits get missed, but it’s well worth a watch for a lot of people, I think.)

I remember Dr. Fung mentioning (in a yt vid) that a thin person with little body fat will have no benefit and could possibly hurt themselves by doing long hours of IF.

I’d love to get lean and get rid of the surface fat on my stomach and thighs. (And maybe the extra skin on the arms will diminish too.)

I know this is a totally different ballgame for men and women.

How bout the post menopausal women who are in keto and have a few more pounds to lose chime in on their thoughts?

Thoughts?

(Jane) #23

I am post-menopausal and I am just trying to maintain even though I could stand to lose a few more pounds - happy with where I am at with a little extra padding, so not thin and lean.

I have been keto for over 10 months and done some EF up to 96 hours (72 typically).

I have noticed the skin on my neck under my chin has tightened up and is smoother. The cellulite on the back of my thighs has diminished - still there but skin is definitely smoother. My bat wings are tighter and I don’t lift so all from the diet and autophagy.

Is all the loose skin gone? No. Do I look like I did at 25? Hell no. Do I look better than before keto (not counting the weight loss itself)? Definitely.

I will add this - keto alone improved my skin tone (I assume from less inflammation) but it took EF before I saw the improvements in skin elasticity and tightness.

Indirectly. Dr Cate Shanahan referenced him in her book Deep Nutrition.

This is an old thread but please point me to information glycine or mag glycinate for Collagen production please.

Did any of those internet doctors, book writers, expert physicians, etc post before and after pictures of people who lost the extra skin by fasting? Pictures of people before (while obese), and after in a clothing such as beach clothing, that would have shown the lack of sagging skin?

If they did, would you, or anyone share a link to these pictures?

If they didn’t… why wouldn’t they?

Until I see a lot of these pictures (I haven’t seen a single one and looking on youtube led to nothing), I think it’s fooling people. Wishful thinking.

I’ll continue looking, because it’d be wonderful if it was true, and I’ll post a link if I ever find one.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #27

It is understandable if people aren’t eager to share before and after photos revealing enough to know if they have loose skin. And, as Dr Fung says in this article, evidence is currently anecdotal. But this may be a good place to start.

Robert looks darn good! I may not see his belly skin but I zoomed in on his face an his neck and facial skin look nice and tight. No turkey wattle and skin on arms and legs also doesn’t look loose. Well done Robert!!

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #29

There are also two before and after topics on the site. They are for keto success of course, but you can look for the folks who mention fasting as part of their journey.

(Jane) #30

Well I am one who shrunk loose skin with fasting but no way in hell would I post before and after pics of my bare belly.

#31

This is very nice! Thank you for sharing!

So, one person. Pity he shared no pictures of what he calls “flaps”, though, and no close up. I’ll try to find more of him on the net.

#32

That’s fantastic, Janie.

And you shouldn’t share pictures! I didn’t mean to ask pictures of other members. What I wanted to see were pictures of people who like to share before and after.

Surgeons who do skin removal share faceless before and after pictures. I was thinking one of the doctors who claim fasting eliminates the problem of loose skin for their patients would have something like an internet page full of these before and after pictures. If you find one of these before and after internet testimonials internet pages, please, share!

(Jane) #33

I haven’t looked but would like to see those types of pictures also.

I am 61, so no spring chicken, and I thought at my age the belly apron was “forever”. My husband loves me just the way I am so it was just my own vanity that wanted it gone. It’s not completely gone and totally flat, but to not have a small flap of skin laying on top of another is a big deal to me. I can live with a small pooch and a wrinkle. Took months of fasting but over time it shrank. And the wrinkles and dimples on my upper thighs from weight loss tightened up also. Mostly on the back of my legs where I couldn’t see it but hubby noticed

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #34

I haven’t heard a doctor saying it eliminates loose skin… Dr Fung’s focus is making his sick patients better. The fact that he hasn’t needed to refer anyone for skin removal was a happy side effect. Since his practice is not a weight loss clinic, I doubt before and after photos crossed anyone’s mind.

#35

That’s great result and very encouraging and inspirational.

It’s not only a matter of vanity! It’s about comfort, too.

Thank you very much for sharing, because it’s nice to know of real people getting the results.

#36

I can appreciate what you’re saying.

However, before and after pictures are very common and also very inspirational. But, sure, health beats looks any way we look at it!

Cheers!

Wikipedia on Collagen shows this chart from citation [19] 1. Szpak, Paul (2011). “Fish bone chemistry and ultrastructure: implications for taphonomy and stable isotope analysis”. Journal of Archaeological Science . 38 (12): 3358–3372. doi:10.1016/j.jas.2011.07.022.

Looks like Glycine is the most common amino acid in Collagen:

There are photos in the threads. Some are keto only. My sense is anyone under 40 or 50 (I know big range but it depends on genetics, in my area there is one group that I have always found to look older than their age unrelated to weight) will lose weight and not have too much saggy skin. People over 50 may or may not get that channel under their chin and on their neck

I am 61 and get comments all the time (since keto) that I don’t look my age. No turkey neck I need to hide with a scarf, no jowls, my batwings have shrunk!!!
