Weight increase?

#1

So I am sure I am freaking out a bit here lol. But sometimes some reassurance can help a guy! Yesterday started week 3 on keto. I must say I am LOVING it and have so much more energy that I had when I was eating like crap all the time! Below are my weekly weigh ins thus far:
Starting: 373
Week 1: 360
Week 2: 355

I’m sure the vast majority of the 13 pounds in week 1 was water weight as I went from who knows how many carbs a day (way too many lol) to 20g or less.

I have been weighing daily and seen days that I will stay the same to days where I’ve seen a nice drop. However when I stepped on the scale today I was up 1.2lbs from yesterday. I track all calories that I consume and am creating a deficit daily. As well as doing mild cardio daily.

My assumption is this could be something as easy as simple as extra water retention as my sodium consumption was up some yesterday. So with all of that said I have 2 questions.

  1. For those of you trying to lose weight have you seen days with gains and then over the week still seen a decrease?
  2. Do you weigh yourself daily or weekly? What made you decide to do the one you do?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

Fat loss is not going to be linear, even for someone who has as much as you have to lose. Don’t worry about it, as long as the overall trend goes in the right direction.

There is frequently a gain day to day, even more than 1-2lbs. So many factors affect your overall body weight. Definitely don’t fret about day to day changes. If you are prone to that, don’t weigh as frequently. Once a week, or even once a month.

It is probably water weight. If you are doing everything correctly you shouldn’t worry. EVERYONE loses and gains up and down by as much as a couple pounds (it is normal) previous post is correct weight loss isnit linear.

Do you track your weight in an app? It has helped me to see the graph. If you can take down the numbers and approach it scientifically, (without freaking out) you will see over time the line does go down, but it is jagged. You are doing very good. :grinning:

I never mind water weight loss, because it’s still X amt of pounds my ass don’t have to lug around all day lol.

I had days when I gained for 3 or 4 days and then had a “wooosh” and lost 3 pounds… don’t stress and keto on!

The body regulates some things very precisely (like sodium levels), but it only needs to regular water to +/- 2L or 4.4 lbs

I weigh myself after first pee break in the morning. But I do not take it seriously because I know it will go up and down by so many pounds per day.

You must look at the overall figures, say over a week or four!

If you feel compelled to watch and measure things, like I do, then watch the 20g carb limit. That is the key.

No one has mentioned this yet so I will…

You’re overthinking it and stressing needlessly. Stress can keep you from losing weight. Don’t weigh every day because this situation will happen. You’ll stress yourself over it and then over analyze and add more stress. You are like me… When I weighed too often in the beginning I would spiral into overthinking, over analyzing, and it was very counterproductive. Stress levels will raise cortisol and can have adverse reaction on your progress. I weighed once a week in the beginning until I knew I wouldn’t prematurely overreact to any ups I had. There will be plenty of ups as well as downs. Deep breaths… Don’t over think this. You’re doing great so just go with the flow.

Monthly view versus a yearly view. Daily weight differences of up to 3 lbs are not uncommon. It is the trend lines that matter.

Daily weight changes will be mostly simple water fluctuation.

When I used to go to the YMCA every morning for a 3+ hour workout, it wasn’t unusual for me to drop 15 to 20 pounds during that 3+ hours. But I’d weigh about the same from morning to morning.

Now, I weigh myself once a month.

Nice graphs Frank. I mean they went in the right direction but also seems like good tracking - if you don’t mind me asking - what app or scales are you using to get such a graph?

Thanks.

I posted something similar in week 3. I am 8 weeks in Keto Lifestyle now. You’re doing great. Keep going. My wife and I had to put the scale away. We were loosing our minds weighing in daily. (We now do once a week.) And there have been weeks with little “scale” victory but the “big” picture shows a down hill trend for both of us and a LONG list of non scale victories. We also measured our waists (in the exact same spot) weekly. That was great to see the loss there. Keep doing what you’re doing. Can’t wait to hear your progress.

Sorry to butt in and answer. Thats the fitbit app. I use it too along with the Fitbit Aria scale that syncs to my app.

Thank you everyone for the valuable insight! I know that this will be a permanent lifestyle change for my wife & I as well feel so much better not eating carbs all the time!

I will keep everyone posted as we move forward.

One last question. While I know it’s a ways off when I start getting in the 220 range that will be 150 pounds down. Is there any chance I won’t have just massive amounts of excess skin?

I’m 33 if that helps. I am drinking 1/2 my body weight in water daily as I’ve read that it can aid your skins elasticity. I also plan to start doing strength training once a few more pounds come off to build muscle as I’ve read that helps. Any other pointers to at least minimize the loose skin?

(Frank) #15

Yup. Fitbit app but I use the weight gurus scale.

I’ve had 5 kids, I’m 37, 5’7, starting weight 247, and I have earned myself a fupa. I’ve lost 33lbs in 3 months. Loose skin happens when you lose weight very quickly. If you are SLOW and steady you shouldn’t have trouble with elasticity. What I’ve been doing is adding 2 scoops of wild caught marine collagen powder everyday to my coffee. I have noticed my skin, hair, and nails are much healthier and my fupa is shrinking and my skin is keeping up. I don’t eat fish so I opted to use a fish collagen to help support my vanity while losing weight. If you decide to try it at some point, let me know and I can recommend some good brands at reasonable prices.

Just a heads up @Luckymisslucy - you may want to keep an eye on your calcium levels if you take marine collagen. It can cause hypercalcemia :slightly_smiling_face:

I didn’t know that, but I’ll follow up with my doc at my check up next week. Thanks for the heads up.

Sleeping Champion here - getting less than a full night’s sleep will hit the scales too. My n=1 experiment was on a day I had to get up after an ungodly few hours of sleep… and then after a nap later… the weight dropped.

It’s but one of many ways our weight likes to play with our minds! You got this! I started at 289 and now down to 205…

Trust the process, stress a little as possible about the changes and enjoy the ride as much as ya can

(Charlotte) #20

I agree on sleep. My magic number is 7.5 hours. Any less and I’m miserable. Any more and I feel like I have a hang over. 7 days a week even on vacation I go to bed and wake up at the same time.
