Vintage Ladies Keto Klub

Hello, and Happy New Year! I am K, and this new year, I am switching from my currently vegan lifestyle to one that is keto-focused to improve my metabolic profile; however, not much support for women over 60 has surfaced in my current circle. An online search yielded this amazing group, so here I am.

In the past, My Fitness Pal with the net carbs script from Caveman Keto helped keep me focused. Perhaps someone can suggest another app that helps track their numbers?

I truly appreciate those who share what they are eating. Thank you!

Have shopping to do! Greatly appreciate your sharing. Happy, healthy wishes to you all with the new year!

Awesome Katy! So good to find others who are on a similar path. I agree with improvement in confidence! Isn’t it amazing how much our self worth is distorted by our appearance and health.

Happy New Year! I for one am so excited about 2018 and what my life will be this year.

Welcome K, we have our struggles, but I am losing!!

Weighed in today and had a loss over Christmas! Whoot! Just shopped to restock my keto pantry/refrig. Pricey, but not as expensive as the health cost of being too heavy.

I too am embracing my wrinkles. Grey hairs, who knoiws have been bleaching for years.

Hiho, Karen! Happy to hear your Christmas holiday ended positively!

Today, I am totally blown away at how liberating cleaning my pantry is… what a great way to begin the new year… Now I’m feeling guilty about donating all this baking, canned, and nonketo stuff to the local food pantry… don’t want to sabotage someone else’s quest for better health with the new year.

Had delicious coffee with coconut oil for breakfast… trying to boost my resolve. Got out the journal and new skillet I received for Christmas. Got new batteries for my scale and need to
charge the Fitbit overnight. Dug out my measuring tape… now I need to bolster my nerve to
take those full body photos, measure all the awkward angles, step on that scale…

That journey that begins with one step is feeling like an uphill slog while I write this. Reading back through everyone’s stories, ups and downs, and tales of success has been so reassuring…

This is do-able! Success is achievable. Thank you again for sharing! Change is gonna come…

Helped my parents un-decorate, cleaned bathrooms and made them lunch.

We had BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, rolls, carrots, toffee for dessert.

I had a rinsed rib with butter, celery with cream cheese. It still can work

Hello Ladies, I just found this forum and being as I’m 60 y.o.a. I’m stumbling around the site. So, while I think I pushed the right button, I’ll introduce myself.
My journey to find ketosis and IF began after I had my first of 4 children. I only really needed to lose about 20 pounds but got pregnant 6 months later! Had baby 3, two years later and #4 came two years after that. I was 41 when my last child was born and proceeded to go into menopause. Done at 48. 48! Tried everything to lose weight, nothing the doc said to do worked. So I started reading about nutrition to combat post partum.
So fast forward to today. I have 70 pounds to lose. My insulin is 14, triglycerides are high and doctor really wants to put me on meds.
But, I started keto, in earnest, today, also. Have been self sabotaging but my back is against the wall to take control of my health.
I’m taking a good multi and a certain kind of B supplement cuz I’m one of those folks who convert B vitamins into seratonin properly. I take magnesium, some potassium from No Salt and I take extra pink salt. Doc wants me to take Nordic Naturals fish oil.
After I left doc’s office, I went straight to Trader Joe’s and loaded up on tons of organic above ground veggies and grass fed beef and cage free chicken and eggs. Made my self a salad and chicken with a lemon sauce that was over the moon. Move over Paula Dean, Ellymo is in the kitchen. I’m going to loosely track cards and protein this first week to get used to enjoying my food. Dr. Berg says 7-10 cups of certain veggies per day and between 3-6 ozs protein with each meal. I’m shooting to eat only lunch and dinner.
Gotta start checking my blood sugar. Looks like I’m back in the car to get glucose testing supplies.
Have enjoyed reading through your posts and I feel very much at home here.
I propose a toast to our success and health!

I must put the picture taking and measuring on my to do list for tomorrow.

(Karen) #128

Welcome!! You have a great plan of attack. Love Dr. Berg!

I start to crave those 7 cups. Steaming them down a bit helps.

I had this problem too! Gave lots of our carby food and sweet sauces to my daughter, who was pregnant at the time, and then felt super guilty!

(Karen) #130

Whenever I have extra carby baked goods, especially sheet cake, I take to church. It is available for anyone who chooses. I’m not gifting any one person. They therefore don’t need to eat it it to thank me. There are those who can eat carbs in moderation. Just not me

OK, there is a lot of discussion on CICO and eating fat to satiety going on. I do think there is a challenge for older gals.

That being said, I was so hungry yesterday. I had maxed my calorie count, was perfect keto, but still hungry. Ate a cloud bread butter Sammie, with a tsp of peanut butter. Still hungry an hour later. Ate another. Went way over “allowed” calories. Woke up next day weighed … cringing… WTH i had a loss. One pound to be exact. I think. I’ll try and loosen up on the CICO.

(Nola) #132

I find I need to go about 200 calories over my calorie recommendation in order to continually lose weight. If I plateau, I add calories instead of cut back and it always works… My eating to satiety feeling is broken so I just have to measure and track my food or else I wouldn’t eat enough. I also never really feel hunger either. I’m sort of jealous of people who’s bodies still work that way, because mine is broken from years of stupid diets.

(Karen) #133

Sleepless
I’m trying a n=1 today based on the Loss that occurred yesterday. I am eating more calories and more fat. Not tons more, just some. Fingers crossed.

I found this article on Diet Doctor about 40+ women very interesting
https://www.dietdoctor.com/top-tips-lose-weight-low-carb-women-40

Cheers ladies!

Thanks for sharing. Bingeing is relatively new to me, just the last few years and it’s pretty scary to become so obsessed with finishing the ice cream/chocolate/sugar;the lack of control. Need to find a new way to “treat” myself, something to look forward to. Fried cheese, huh? That sounds like a treat to me!

(Karen) #136

Jo - GREAT ARTICLE ! I 'm book marking this. I was suspecting that protein might be a problem. I see our fellas eating slabs of meat and it doesn’t work for me.

The mindful week is good advice as well, shake it up. Of course they are saying, watch your carbs, watch your protein, watch your fat, and watch out for binging. Especially on nuts. I own that one!

I’ve done IF and never seen results on a 18/6. I might need EF.

Sounds like carb cycling really doesn’t work for us. Leanne of “healthful pursuits” got bitten by that, I think. That one cheat carby day might knock you out for weeks is disappointing, as slip ups happen.

The remaining tips are std. diet advice, but watching over-doing fat surprised me.

UPDATE ON MY N=1: yesterday I didn’t restrict calories to 1200. I watched (reduced) my protein, AND bumped up the fat… I’ll be!, if I didn’t lose weight again! Whoot! 168lbs. I’ll do one more day to see if this is a useful method for me for now. 3. days would seem like a trend. Although I might have been holding water from the cup of cashews (carby) last Sunday. :open_mouth:

In the article, the last point #10 is “Being Realistic” - and for me this includes PATIENCE. Sometimes this is really hard, but I’m making these changes for long term and I realize that it may take me a long time to reach my goals, or they may need to be adjusted as I go.

The battery in my scale just died and I am thinking of not replacing it for 3 months just to see what happens.

My big non scale victory this month is that I can wear my wedding band again for the first time in years! This was a pretty big deal for me, I"m very happy about this one.

(Karen) #138

Wedding band… Me too! Haven’t worn it for years.

Another, my shoes are loose. :joy::joy::joy::joy:
