Hi All! Love this thread, thank you all for sharing. I’m 53 and have been menopausal since 47. It’s been a huge struggle with weight since meno, gained more than 30 pounds rapidly and can’t lose it. I’ll be keto for about a month then go on a sugar bender, usually starts with having a cocktail. Takes a while to get back to keto, but I feel amazing when I’m keto. I’m struggling with consistency.
Any advice to keep this going long-term?
You are all so inspirational, keep sharing please!
Thanks and Happy New Year!

AndiMac glad you are here!
I don’t drink. Mom’s an alcoholic, and I abstain, but it can really throw you off. and I understand the in and out , back and forth with keto and not keto is hard. Can you enjoy a sparkling water when all are drinking add a lime to look like you are participating. I do.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Ate a billion cashews watching those struggling Broncos, get their rears kicked by the Chiefs 3rd string and rookie qb. Just think of the picks we’ll get next year!!!
Hope the cup of cashews doesn’t knock me out of keto
Andi, I struggled with consistency for a long time. For me it’s hagendaz ice cream bars. I can go through the Costco 15 pack in 2 days. It really doesn’t matter what your trigger food or drink is, because it results in the same downward sugar slope that would sometimes last months for me. This is what has worked for me: I am strict with my foods, but I don’t limit the amount I choose to eat. I just eat till I’m full, then I wait till I’m good and hungry again for the next meal. Sometimes that’s 18 hours from the last meal. I eat meats, eggs, cheese, veggies or no veggies, depending on my mood. I do have cream in my coffee. I rarely desire sugars or snacks anymore, but if it happens, I eat some macadamia nuts (Costco’s brand), or I fry up some shredded cheese, or I have some pork rinds. These interventions have made all the difference. If I’m going to some family party with lots of food, I eat before I come, or I bring something I feel good about eating. Nobody even notices or cares what I’m eating, and I wouldn’t care if they did because it’s my life, my choices. Good luck to you. FYI, I’m a major sugar addict. If I can get past the sugar, you can too. Just to clarify, over the years I didn’t eat a spoonful of ice cream, or a few bites of candy…No, I would eat the entire carton of ice cream, or the entire bag of chocolate, or several candy bars. You get the idea. I was a heavy lifter when it comes to sugar/carbs, with no will power to stop. My weight would fluctuate up to 50 pounds in a year, followed by another stupid diet craze. Ketogenic eating is both healthy and sustainable. It’s sustainable because you feel great, but for me the biggest factor of success is that I no longer have uncontrollable sugar cravings.
Keep working at this. Keep going back to eating this healthy food. You WILL succeed.
Think I’ll do a fat fast with Brenda’s Zorn group mid-January. Baby steps. Anyone ready to jump in. Not ready to go without eating entirely.

Hey, me too ! Thanks again for the invite
Before I found this Ketogenic Forum, I started all this with an app called Carbohydrate Manager. It has an OK not great macro log - it does the job but many extra daily clicks (!). Also has a forum, so now I’m looking into two
great forums from time to time. Gotta tell you, I am so impressed !
Regarding consistency, let me post another here …
Happy New Year all !

So on the other forum, I started a thread in which we post little ( or bigger!) tricks we’ve found that have helped us deal with various issues. Here’s a copy-paste of my entry today which deals with consistency quite nicely.
ISSUE: “Consistency” How can I make sure that I do this right (for me right now) every day? I aim at a certain number of netcarbs, gms pro and fat. How can I make sure I’ve accomplished this by day’s end?
I FOUND: If I plan each day’s intake first thing in the morning - and log it into my keto macro app as if I’d actually swallowed all of it (!!), then I’ve got it made - I have pre-chosen each food and portion of it to match my chosen macros for the day. The day looks GREAT right now and it’s only 9:21 in the morning (!)
I generally cook for two so this works right into my morning habit of prepping dinner first thing mornings. ( my hubbie will do something (eg grill the ) before we eat and then he’ll do all the clean up so this is sweet!)
If I change my mind on something, I’ve just got to calc it in. The only drawback seems to be any tendency to just add something without counting it. I might start just coming in with a few carbs left to spare (!).
This takes a bit of time in the morning and I really want to find a better macro AP. But I’m learning how to do this more quickly already !
Karen - might you say more about “ fat fast “ or direct me to that link? . That sounds interesting. Although I find IF quite easy and often don’t eat til 2pm ( other than bulletproof coffee!) - so often16:8 is easy - full extended fasting isn’t at all easy. I’ve done egg fast, is this similar ?
Thanks !

This is it.
Heather you look fantastic. Congrats on your success and all the others here.
I was thinking the same, about Brenda’s group fast. Like you, a fat fast I think I can do. I’m rereading The Complete Guide to Fasting at the moment but I don’t know why I’m so afraid of doing a full fast. I should, cos I’ve just stepped on the scale and put on 5lbs over the holiday period - but I’m not feeling guilty cos I had the most wonderful time visiting with my son and his girlfriend. I’ll just keep up BPC in the morn and then OMAD until mid-Jan and the fast ?!?! KCKO
My new pans.
OK, I was on the elliptical at the rec… And watching the TV. I got caught by the infomercial about copper chef. I’ve been wanting new pots and pans. Soooo for Christmas I got them. Whoot!
I have been seasoning them with bacon bacon! Slides right off with the cheese and eggs. So far love them. I’m treating them like cast iron pans, a wipe, or rinse. Light on soap or no soap.

No actually since it launched me into keto (which has always been hard to get to), I noticed that I had the opposite issue.
Yup… I’m in! I do daily 18/6 IF and monthly EF already, but it’s probably easier with support from a group. How long is her fast?
My longest fast ever was 5 days and it did not go well for me… 3 days works fine. I suppose if I added something besides water and electrolytes to my fast I could try the 5 again, but we’ll see.
Hello All! My name is Katy, I live in New Orleans and I am just about to turn 59 years young in February! I am replying to Heather’s post because we have some similarities: I am 5’4" and started Keto in early June 2017 at 212lbs.
All the NSVs are so important to me - sideways down stairs? Gone! Lethargy and mild depression? Gone! Feeling dumpy and embarrassed to go out? Gone! Pain in joints, especially when getting out of bed? Gone! and on and on!
I have lost 60 lbs, and gained 120 lbs worth of confidence and stability! For an introvert, that is saying a lot! The sustainability of this woe is what boggles my mind. I love it SO much! It really lends itself to continuity. In the past if I had gone rogue it would mean chucking whatever unsustainable woe I was doing at the time + a boat load of guilt! Now if I go rogue it is only for a short bit - a few hours at most, then back to Keto. No guilt, but reflection on what triggered it and addressing that issue.
Thanks for this thread and all the wonderful women of-a-certain-age that show this can be done. BTW, I have some saggy skin on my neck, but until it resolves I wear it - similar to my gray hairs - like a badge of honor for the hard work accomplished! (PS - don’t tell my friends or family this isn’t hard work, that is our little secret!)
Happy New Year!
