Vintage Ladies Keto Klub

I check my ketones and BG everyday. For me, tracking metrics is motivating. Good numbers encourage me to stay the course, bad numbers encourage me to get back on track (or switch things up).

Have been looking at keto food porn on the" what I ate thread". How do I add a picture??

(5c42cb62e5c022d313b2) #63

Have started drinking really sweet coffee and hwc. I’m liking it but it has to be sweet

Newbie here! Kicking off the new year with a diet and going to try to be kind to myself. So happy to find this forum. A forum was very helpful when I did HCG.

Trying to set myself up for success and buying things I need and reading as much as possible without getting overwhelmed. Went on eBay and got strips a monitor (both BG and Ketones) and prick things.
Bought some coconut butter and mct stuff and macadamia nuts (already stock almonds in my house)
What else do you think besides fresh produce do you think I should keep around the house?
I also downloaded the free version of the carb manager app.
I need to start to understand label reading. Not that I should be doing much of anything with labels. But some cheeses ( like those little triangle ones that come in a circle- those ok?)
I am usually diary free so not sure how my tummy will react. Not that I don’t LOVE cheese.
Going to force myself to learn how to cook steak. Like it just didn’t grow up on it. Easiest cut to buy and cook?
I also have a high stress job and am naturally riddled with anixety (take meds for depression) lucky me! Going to try to do bulletproof in the mornings but might do mostly decaf as I get worried full caffeine with make me nutty.

Any helpful tips, tricks, learnings, how to get smell of bacon outta your house:) would be helpful! I don’t mind being pretty strict in the beginning so if there is something I should stay away from to really kick start this clean happy to do it. Just don’t say my stevia haha. Diet Coke will be hard enough. Best go to approved food list?

So inspiring to read about all of you! Brain dump on me when you have a moment!

Happy almost new year!

Welcome Meagan. Ya, bacon smell on my clothes is beginning to attract the neighborhood dogs on my walks! I still drink diet sodas occasionally. I use splenda, so shoot me!

Older women will have success, it will be slower though. Stay calm, keto on.

Unless you have a religious or ideological issue with cheese, or a physiological one… Switch from non-dairy to dairy cheeses. Not sure but non-dairy might be carby

(Madge Boldt) #70

Welcome @Megan_Wasserman. I started keto two months ago and still consider myself to be a newbie. I did not prepare as much as you seem to have. I think I have tried too many things and thought it might just be another phase. But no, here I still am.

If you like to measure and track, go for it. I take the laid back easy way. I make sure my net carbs are 20g or below, eat “enough” protein, and enjoy the fats. When you are starting out, that’s really all you have to be concerned with. And of course, listening to the 2 Keto Dudes podcast will teach you so much.

PS - Just realized I never introduced myself in this thread. I am Madge, 57 years old and happy to be part of the old ladies keto klub.

Hi… My first post because I’ve been a non-social lurker :slightly_smiling_face:!!!
I’m 57, I’m an empty nested widow, I’ve been Keto for 8mo because both my mother and father died within months of each other, both due to T2 diabetes problems. Of course they never say “died from diabetes” on the certificate, it’s always something else, but the underlying cause was out of control, far progressed diabetes for both of them. I watched them decline and suffer, pop pills and inject insulin. It was horrible and so expensive in many different ways. I decided last year that end wasn’t going to happen to me so I started researching how to change what everyone said was my genetic destiny.

I started at a tight size 22, I’m now down to a loose 12 and still losing, even though it’s slowed down significantly. I think 20 more pounds to go. I go to senior water aerobics 3x/wk and have just started a bit of weight training. My blood sugar readings are still higher than I’d like, but down significantly. I wish I could declare myself normal, but I can’t. I also have RA, which will never go away, but it has improved a bit too.

I’m happy to have found this little corner of the forum. I really haven’t told many people that I’m doing Keto and IF simply because people aren’t too awfully nice about it. There are a couple of women in my aerobics class who feel it necessary to shame me over giving up sugar, but since I’m the skinniest women there, they can just shut up… but it does hurt that people aren’t supportive and I can’t share my milestones or knowledge.c

Anyway… thanks for being here. I hope everyone has a lovely New Years :slightly_smiling_face:

Have been reading this thread and love all your thoughts. Was considering myself ‘older’ last January as I turned 55, but now, having been keto with IF since March I feel younger and better than I have in decades. You can find my story in other posts, but summary is Mar 20, 2017 I was 215, size 22/24 , 5 ft 4 in( high of 260 in 2015). I am T2D and was on blood pressure, cholestoral, metformin and 55 units of insulin daily. A1c was over 11 and had been for years. Had been on diet and diabetes drug roller coaster for over 25 years.

Within weeks I was off all meds except metformin and losing rapidly. Current status is 148 lbs, A1c is 6.0, still take Metformin as it doesn’t bother my stomach like it does some. I am full keto, no cheats with daily IF and occassionaly EF of 36 to 72 hrs length. I have lost huge inches including waist going from 46 or more to now 34 inches! I now fit comfortably in my size 10 skinny jeans. Looking forward to posting my one year anniversary photos in March! KCKO

Wow ladies, you all just made my day. So nice to read your posts! So inspiring!

(Jo) #75

A year ago I started LCHF and although I felt really good eating a low carb diet (especially eating fat), I didn’t track and I allowed myself to fall back on my old way of eating within 6-8 months. This past September I committed to a ketogenic diet under doctor supervision and I have found that using a food tracker, checking my blood glucose for one meal (1 hour and 2 hour) has really kept me on track. I’m also really curious about the science behind this diet and I really enjoy watching LCHF and Keto videos on youtube, plus the 2KDudes podcasts. More information helps me stay committed.

My weight loss has been very slow, around 12 pounds since the beginning of September, but it is noticeable. I would like to lose another 20 pounds. And I am “shopping” in my own closet as I progress backward through my clothes into the ones that I had got too heavy for.

I go to a dance class once or twice a week for the pleasure of it, I like to walk, and I am starting some weight training with a fitness trainer in the new year.

Oh, and I’m 53, pre menopausal, and hypothyroid - so hormone challenges are my reality!

(Jo) #76

Heather - you look fantastic! thank you for sharing your story and pictures!

(Joan) #77

wow! HeatherD that is awesome! There is hope. I was just sitting here thinking that this just isn’t going to work, I haven’t lost anything, not feeling so wonderful either. But reading your story and seeing the pics just gave a good boost. Thank You

I am glad to see so many of you here. No offense dudes, but this weight loss, while successful, is slow for us “ladies of a certain age”

Turning 62 in a few days. Saw both my sisters over the holiday. I am clearly now the skinniest. Although nowhere near my goal.

So feel free to journal your successes, whoopes, and we’ll support.

God bless your new year!

Jo- I too have been finding treasure in my closet, and am looking forward to a spring wardrobe!!!

OK, I have been losing but I rarely get enough fat. Dan-dan suggests that to lose the skin too, you need to stay higher fat. Any of you gals carrying around extra skin. I have an apron.
