I’m too afraid to try ghee. My body hurts so much after I eat the tiniest amount of dairy, I don’t want to risk it.

New to keto (about 17 days in), mostly new here too.
I’m a 56-year-old writer – so, a very sedentary lifestyle. Had a hysterectomy 3.5 years ago (due to uncontrollable, heavy periods that stretched out for months at a time, nearly ruining daily life). Went through 2 weeks of night sweats and hormonal craziness but have been completely hormonally calm, with smooth sailing ever since.
I’ve struggled with IBS-D the past few years and have used Plexus products for the better part of a year to help me with that. They seemed to curb about 75% of my symptoms for many months but the past month or more, I’m back to square one.
I’m a T2 diabetic (diagnosed 8 years ago).
A1C is hovering around 7.1 (which is where it was at diagnosis), after some nice dips down to 6.2 early on when I was stricter about carbs.
The past year or more I’ve been in complete carb denial. Saw a friend at Thanksgiving who’s been on keto since last summer. She’s lost 40 pounds and seems focused and clear-headed in ways I envy. SO… here I am.
I started out 17 days ago at about 220 lbs. (and I’m only 5’2"), size 20-22, with morning fasting blood sugar numbers around 160. Right now I’m down about 9 lbs. (scale has read down 9 lbs. for the past three days so I’m trusting it now, ha!), and I’ve been seeing morning fasting numbers as low as 119 – numbers I haven’t seen for years.
I also quit the Plexus products about three days ago, figuring if they weren’t helping my symptoms, I might as well save money and quit. This was about the same time I started feeling a little more energetic. The past two days I haven’t had the IBS symptoms at all, and today I had more energy than I’ve had all week put together (still do and it’s nearly midnight here – I’m a night owl).
I’m cautiously optimistic that some of these good things happening are related to the keto changes (I’m under 20g carbs a day, many days between 0 and 10).
And this is the first time I’ve made significant dietary changes where I haven’t been secretly thinking, “Now, WHEN can I hit my goal weight so I can STOP doing this?” As a diabetic, I need these changes to be permanent, and so far this feels sustainable. Not sure I’ve ever felt that way about any diet. Ever.
Glad to be here. Glad to read this thread and feel I’m in good company. Thanks for reading!
DH had a big lesson this morning, lol. Last night he made one of his box dinners, Chicken Helper or something like that. This morning he woke up with a blasting headache, more like a massive hangover headache. He is now back in bed. He keeps telling me about all his pain also, but so far refuses to believe that it is caused from foods. He insists that it’s just tight muscles and knots. I hope they come around, there’s fun things out there in the world I’d like to share with him!

Mine too. Had him watch " The perfect human diet". with me, but light hasn’t come on.

For sure, Sarah Hallberg is one to watch. She is with Verta, in California. They deal with diabetics mostly, and it’s an on-line program. She says their diabetes improves dramatically within a few DAYS of starting the program. It’s a VERY successful on-line program for reversing diabetes.
Yes, I actually sent an inquiry to Virta to ask if they would take someone who’s not even been diagnosed as pre-diabetic but clearly has the symptoms. I haven’t heard back from them yet but I think that could help him (and I think there may be a chance he’d be willing to try it if he believes the Sarah Hallberg video).
Hey, I cannot find that Fat Burning Female podcast on stitcher or iTunes – I’ll google it. Does anyone listen to Keto for Normies? That is my latest obsession, though I’m old enough to be their mother but between their podcast, youtube channel and live instagrams, they have become a big part of my life. All the podcasts (keto) I listen to just really help me stay motivated.
I am definitely in that club. At least I can check yes to many of those things listed.
Greetings!
I’m here too…
60 year old lady on keto for 5 months now and no weight loss. I have always maintained weight in the 120’s range or less but last couple years or less my weight has crept up to 140. That’s a lot for me. I have been IF with no weight loss and now trying one day fasts. Actually I have only done one entire day last week and today fasting until tomorrow noon.
I do check ketones with blood monitoring and I’m in ketosis. I notice my blood glucose is 90 to 100 fasting.
That seems a little high but not bad.
The only thing I can think of is just to continue doing what I’m doing.
I’m healthy…been to the doctor lately end all checks out.
And suggestions??
Anyone else stuck for this long??
I’m always surprised to see no movement on the scale, but I know periodically I only see measurement changes. Start checking that too. Also people mention several culprits that block loss, like dairy, sweeteners, and sneaky carbs. Measure your food and journal it. Eat more fat. I lose with more fat. Watch out for nuts. Easy to over eat.

I am 69. Went paleo at 63. Got a personal trainer at 64. Lost 35 lbs and went from sizes 10-12 to 4-6. Went keto about 1.5 years ago. Bodyfat now around 15%. Went to my doc today for routine checkup. Fasting glucose 52 with ketones in urine. So impressed with what personal training and keto did, I beam a personal trainer. Hogwash older women can’t get really fit.
There is no lactose in ghee so no normal dairy issues. Best tasting is ancient organics brand, find on amazon. I just eat it out of the jar sometimes!
It’s not the lactose that causes the trouble, it’s the milk protein. I logically understand that the clarification removes the milk solids, but if the smallest amount remained it would cause trouble.
I also like to exercise. Eating dairy would put me out of commission for several days.
I use coconut oil and olive oil or even mayonnaise for fat on foods and it’s fine.
Edith
I am impressed with your results!
Could you give some more details about how you eat? I initially lost about 10 pounds but I have stalled out many months at this point.
I ran into some trouble three months into keto with heart palpitations. I tried upping electrolytes and stopping caffeine. I had a physical. Everything checked out fine. I upped my carbs to about 50g a day and the palpitations went away.
Lately, I am bringing my carbs back down and so far no palpitations. I am peri menopausal. It’s possible the palpitations were just a symptom of that and coincidental with keto. I am not sure at this point.
But, since you have had such wonderful success, I would love to hear what you eat and what your caloric intake is like.

For a decade or longer, I also had an allergy to a milk protein. Even the smallest amount would affect me. Fortunately I’ve grown out of that degree of severity. Years ago, I did make some ghee and when eating it, I did not get an allergic reaction. I just didn’t like it that much.
I love butter, I was so happy when I found out I could eat butter, real butter! I made some ghee years ago also, I didn’t like it much either.
So, I’m still not losing any weight. I’ve cut down to 2 meals a day, fasting for about 14 to 16 hours, cut the protein down, keeping carbs within 20 to 30g. Ride my bicycle for 10miles a day, I’m not ready to start exercising more than that yet. hmm… not going to throw in the towel or anything but hmmm…
I listent to Keto for Normies. Love that cute couple. They are fun, and for the first time in my life I found myself enjoying “haul” vidoes. “Look what we got at Walmart” sorts of topics, I could not believe I was fascinated! I don’t care about their gym workouts, but I enjoy their recipes, chatter and even the dog and cat
Bee,
I love Ketosis for Normies! I also love The Keto for Women Show (aka the Fat Burning Female podcast). It definitely is on iTunes I listen to it every Friday! Have you listened to Ketovangelist Kitchen or the 2 Keto Dudes? Check them out! Love the motivation I get from all of them as well as the great information.
