Gout is a form of arthritis. High purine foods can aggravate it.

Gout is just another one of the high carb consequences, like metabolic symdrome, diabetes, etc. Gout will get better with continued adherence to this way of eating, but you must keep with it and stay with it. As for high purine foods, normally touted as the causes of gout; these foods are not the root cause, and not to be feared. Eating correctly should correct this problem. Listen to Ivor Cummings’ podcasts. He touches on gout.

@BNWebb I know gout has been addressed either on the forum or in the podcasts. I’m sure a quick search will find the information that you need. From what I remember it may not be unusual to see a flare initially but it does not last. Good job getting your bs levels down. Search dawn phenomenon and you will find the explanation. Your clearly on the right track. Good health to you.

Wow, what a great thread. I’m 56, no thyroid and post-menopausaul for a few years. Started keto in Oct 2016 but have dabbled out and back in since then but I really want to be serious about it this time. I feel and look so much better when I eat this way and I sleep better, too. Part of the reason for my trying it in the first place was to see if I could set an example for my husband because he really needs it. He was one of those guys who was always skinny but ate like crap. He’s not been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, but I know he is. He has horrible pain in his feet – definitely has diminished our quality of life – and drinks wine every night to deal with that – making the whole blood sugar thing even worse! I have recently gotten him to switch to Tito’s Vodka (which our teenage boys think is hilarious for some reason – that dad’s a hard core drinker now and it’s my fault) and we’ll see if he can stick with it and if it makes any difference. He’s a boy/man who loves his carbs. I have mostly gotten him to give up bread, but he still loves spaghetti, mac and cheese, etc. I need to not nag, but I do need to educate. If anyone has any thoughts for me, let me know. I really would like to have a healthy husband and have him enjoy this lifestyle with me.

Oh, @farmgirl, what was that stevia brand that tastes better? Thanks!

Hi, I’m new to keto and doing badly even though I am trying. I am using myfitnessPal to log what I eat, but… Anyway, I have arthritis, Lactose intolerance, am overweight but have normal (5.5) A1C, in fact everything is pretty normal but my weight. More sedentary, And I am on two medications that cause my brain to say “let’s eat again”, which makes it difficult. Any suggestions?

(Arlene) #227

It’s called PureBulk stevia extract We get it on amazon.

I would try dairy-free keto. Healthful Pursuits with LeAnn Vogel has dairy-free keto recipes. Many people who follow a ketogenic diet really add an awful lot of dairy in the form or heavy cream and butter not realizing dairy can have health consequences.

Most of my joint issues vanished when I completely gave up all forms of dairy. The remaining aches and pains disappeared when I went keto. Those remaining aches were probably from ingesting sugar and other empty carbs.

So many setbacks… Keto started out so deliciously; however, within a few days, my skin was emblazoned with a florid and incredibly itchy rash all over (including spots I didn’t know could itch)… So worried I had picked up something from the grandkids! Haha!

Learned I am hugely histamine intolerant – have been pricked and poked, have undergone a round of allergy testing, have undergone nutrition consults with a subsequent menu makeover – what fun!!! Forget spinach, bleu cheese, or aged anything, forget fermented goodies, no aged beef, no salami…oh my.

Fresh is best…

Foregoing steroids, I have opted for antihistamine support, and am seeing slow resolution. Even with the elimination diet à la keto, my pants haven’t fit this well in ages! Yahoo!!!

Hi Barbara,
Hope to help. I’m on Seroquel XR which raises blood sugar and makes you gain weight. Went keto Nov 2016. I gradually increased my fat until it was 80% of my calories. I lost 25 lbs in 2 months then stalled. Tried being vegan gained 10 lbs and higher blood sugar. Went back on keto Dec 2017. Lost the 10 lbs I gained. Now I’m trying longer IF. Try keto seriously. Hungry? Eat more fat. Fat till satiated. Moderate protein. Carbs under 20gr . You might find that keto helps despite your meds. You may even find that you may, maybe won’t need them at all. That’s what I’m working towards. Almost there. I’m off 1 psych med, off insulin, off metformin. Don’t give up just keep trying. Keto works.

(Karen) #231

Whoa! Might have over done the fat 174 g my best estimate. Was hungry. Big eating day on protein too. Fingers crossed I don’t pay.

Welcome Barb, welcome Beth!!!

Hi Beth, I’m 57 and my DH is kind of butt too! He is a diabetic and insists he needs his carbs. He doesn’t have pain in his feet but he has pain all over the rest of his body. I understand the diminished quality of life. I can’t get him to see the connection of his carbs and inflammation. He has cut down on the carbs, we don’t have potatoes or bread with every meal but he still has his oatmeal with fake sugar in it and other crackers or the bars! He always has the protein bars. We also switched over to Titos, we used to drink Baileys and vodka but after reading the sugar content of that I said no more! (sure was good :frowning: ) As for thoughts of getting him to switch over and enjoy the benefits of feeling good, I don’t know, it sure is frustrating tho.

(Barbara I Krusen) #233

Thank you. I have decided to do exactly that! I have cut out all dairy…even my beloved butter, lol. 9I have loved it since my grandma served it as a child and even used to make my own!) have you investigated Ghee? I have been considering making my own as a butter substitute.

(Barbara I Krusen) #234

I am on Valproic Acid (1000mg per day) and Celexa (standard dosage) and Motrin 800mgx2. Ouch! My thyroid is being checked because I once had hypothyroid disease and issues with thyroid growths with disappeared years ago. I hate this sudden ballooning. I am going to try your percentages. I have been using (trying to use) My fitness pal:
1200 cal, 15% carb, 75% fat, and 20% prot. I will try raising fat and lowering carbs, though healthy carbs are in my greens, etc…
I am taking a Nutrition class at my local heath food store taught by a certified dietician for 30 days. It is an elimination diet. And I will also have the opportunity to learn self-discipline regarding food and also why I feel like I am starving myself. I am really excited. I Know I can do this! Thank you for your support, Renee
!!!

(Barbara I Krusen) #235

Have you tried Keto bars or and Keto processed foods? I have stopped drinking, but I switched to tequila, blue agave, when I was diagnosed with Type II. Read up. It is lower in sugar and easier on a diabetic system.

(Beth) #236

It’s so frustrating at times, isn’t it, Joan? DH says “I’d do anything. I’d pay thousands of dollars to get rid of this pain.” But, he won’t really do anything. Mine is starting to pay a little bit of attention and I think I may be able to get him to watch a Sarah Hallberg video on youtube. If I can get him to actually sit and watch that, I think it may influence him. She seems to be very matter of fact about the science and he is always looking for the science. I’m really hoping that if he can get through that he might actually want to learn more. I hope so! Good luck, Joan.

(Joan) #237

I haven’t tried them. I’ll pass it along to DH. I don’t even want to try anything that resembles a candy bar. I’m finally getting to the point where I’m not craving sweets or carbs all the freaking time! I’m hoping it sticks.

(Paige) #238

Try adding cacao butter it makes your drink smell so good and get your fat in

(Tric Zyzyk) #239

Hello, I have just found this forum and am hoping it will enhance my keto journey that I have been on since August of last year.

I agree that Diet Doctor is filled with information and love following the Fat Burning Female and Healthful Pursuit podcast. Have you listened to Ketoangelist?

(Tric Zyzyk) #240

Hello everyone! So glad that I found this forum and this Klub! I am 5’4" and 55 years young until March and feel better today than I did last year this time. I owe it all to deciding to change my lifestyle and going keto in August 2017. My starting Keto weight was 255 lbs, I’m proud to say that I am 189 lbs today. I am very strict Keto with less than 20gr of carbs a day (most days <10gr of carb. I am reducing dairy but have not cut it totally out of my diet, but have identified some issues with swelling and joint pain when I have dairy. Have thought recently about going totally carnivore, but think my family would loose it with me.

What made me go keto? Several reasons…first and foremost at the time, I wanted to lose weight. I had my thyroid radiated in 2000 and been battling for years with continued weight gain. Just last month I requested additional blood work (thanks to Dr. Neil Barry and the Fat Burning Female podcast) and discovered that for 17 years, I was taking the wrong medicine. My endocrinologist and I are now working on getting Natural Hormones (pig hormones) balanced. So far, the improvement is awesome. I think I may begin feeling human again soon.

Some of my non scale victories: better skin, reduced anti depressants medicine, reduced HBP medication, lower A1C and overall better mentality. One interesting factor, though I have passed menopause and labs show it as well, my cycle came back the month of December. Hoping it was a one time thing with the medicine adjustment, we’ll see.

I’m a photography student, grandmother, mother to 3 and wife of 31 years.

Can’t wait to know all of you!
