Vintage Ladies Keto Klub

Hi there! I’m late to this party, but what a party!! I’m lookin’ at the big six-oh in about a month.

I’ve had metabolic issues since my 20’s. Since I’m a health geek as far as research goes, I’ve tried everything I could get my hands on from raw diets to Ornish-type to Zone, etc. Nothing worked and weight just kept creeping up until last year it was close to 280 (on a 5-5 frame). So continued research…

I started paleo once, but found it unsustainable for me because I was still just hungry all the time – still too many carbs apparently. But I did it again anyway and got rid of lots of carbs just by avoiding grains and high starch veggies. Still continued the research and stumbled on keto, which I jumped into around September. I’ve lost almost 50 lbs, for which I am grateful. I fell off the wagon somewhat over the holidays, but a 72 hour water fast set me back on the road.

I am starting to see some of the metabolic issue resolve. My glucose levels were close to diabetic, and now they are normal. My lipids were high, and now they are close to normal (except slightly high cholesterol). Liver levels which indicate nonalcoholic fatty liver were high, now they are at the low end of the spectrum. My waist circumference is down 6". The only thing left to fix is blood pressure. My doctor is unhappy with me because I refuse to take the meds (NOT recommending this AT ALL – my choice). Point being, I am hopeful that this too will resolve.

I appreciate the comments about dairy. I’m pretty sensitive, too. In research I found that cow’s milk can be a culprit for many, but sheep milk can be tolerated sometimes. So I sprinkle a bit of sheep cheese on zoodles sometimes and do ok. It’s kind of a bummer that lots of keto cookbooks are heavy into dairy. I decided to give it a go and was drinking coffee with heavy cream. All that got me was a painful inflamed sciatica that I’m still trying to resolve. Ugh.

Thank you for all your input. I really appreciate the support I’ve seen here.

Hi Karen, I’m with you,

High body fat
Low lean muscle
Hashimotos
Arthritis (making exercise quite hard)
I also live with an internal morphine pump due to severe back problems

It’s no fun getting old but being old is no excuse for being overweight either.
I have been LCHF on and off but mostly on since March ‘16. Went on 5 cruises which always do me in…I have another planned for the end of March so atm I am staying on track so I have a head start haha…

Cheers

Yes, I listen to all the ketovangelist/keto athlete/ketovangelest kitchen podcasts. Basically anything keto, low carb, fat related, I listen to! So, I have listened to Keto for Women but didn’t put it together with the Fat Burning Female – I thought that was the name of a podcast. I’ll be ready for it, when it is! It is funny how strangely fascinating Matt and Megha are, isn’t it, @Madge_Boldt?! Especially given my age, I sometimes feel very strange watching them, but I’ve grown so fond of them.

Hi Tracey fully get your fear of not eating. For as long as I can remember have been brainwashed gotta eat gotta eat… Doing my first fast which I set out to do 24hrs but ended up almost 48 was so enlightening when I didn’t go into starvation coma… Oh the mind is a powerful thing. Today I am doing a 24 hr fast bit of a detox thing as I have been off wagon last week just long enough to feel like crap.

(Lorraine Piercy) #265

Hi there. I’m sure it’s OK to eat just choose good fats try some hard-boiled eggs in there as well. Get in touch with the sensation and ask is it true hunger or mind monkey chatter

Hi Anna
I heard or read somewhere that Leanne Vogel of Healthful pursuit.com has a dairy free cookbook. She has a YouTube channel also.

I was travelling on Friday, so it was just easier not to eat. I made it to the 21 hour mark and then got quite hungry. I ate my dinner that night, and then the next day I went a bit off the rails. I never eat anything that isn’t at least marginally keto, but I tend to compulsively stuff my bacon (no longer pie) hole. LOL! I suppose that if I do this on a more regular basis, I might overcome that day after feeling of needing to eat excessive amounts of food. To be fair though, I gave up sweeteners last week, and I think I was craving something sweet to make myself feel better. I’m so impressed that your 24 hour fast turned into 48 hours! WTG! :+1::+1::+1:

Just got my now keto blood work back. Was fasting for test.

LDL high, but expected and as I hear not a useful test.
TRIG in the normal range.
Ketones high.

Seems like a good result. Did your HDL go up as well? According to Ivor Cummins, the Fat Emperor, the more meaningful number is your Trig/HDL ratio.

I tried making these and they turned out pretty well, but I had to bake them for like and hour and a half! I’m pretty sure I didn’t make them too big, but they were doughy inside even though they “sounded hollow” as the recipe suggested. Anybody else have this issue?

(Marie Dantoni) #271

Hi Melissa, Sounds like an oven temperature issue, or measuring was off. I get 6 from the recipe.

You can try replacing a quarter cup of the almond flour with coconut flour and leaving them to dry bit in the oven after the one hour of baking.

I’m new to this forum and have been eating keto for 3 weeks. I’m 63 so I like hearing what older women are experiencing. I’be lost about 10 lbs. and am happy with that. My challenge is fatigue. I’m so bagged that vacuuming my small condo was hard. I’ve been adding lots of salt to my meals, and eating salty meats like bacon and sausage. I could use some help here.

(Karen) #273

Trig/HDL. 66/42 or 1.57. I understand that’s good. So whoo hoo!

(Tracy) #274

You betcha! :+1::grin::dancer:

(Karen) #275

Carol
Sorry you are feeling tired. I don’t get the boundless energy thing some feel on keto, but are you eating enough?

K

(Melissa) #276

Thanks! I will give that a try.

It is very individual how long it takes to switch over to efficient fat burning. If you are already supplementing with adequate salt, then the other thing to try is to simply eat more fat. Until you’re using your own fat stores, you need that fuel. MCT oil can be good at this stage for energy, but just adding more butter and healthy oils will work too.

Right now your best friend is patience, and the faith that you WILL get there. I am about 10 months in and have not yet become a super fat burner, and it took several weeks before I had settled in and felt “normal.” To begin with, I ate more fat in the first three months than I had ever eaten in my life! Ok, that’s probably a lie, but this was the first time it wasn’t attached to carbage that was undermining my health.

Keep calm and keto on Carol!#KCKO

Hey @farmgirl Arlene. I just saw a posting of yours on the ZC thread. I’ve been toying with ZC since the beginning of December. I think I go long enough to feel pretty darned good, but then give in to carb cravings, rationalizing that some veg is better than none, right? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: But, I think it might be the thing for me right now as I tackle food addiction issues and a long-standing stall. You said that you go in and out of it. I’m just wondering on which do you feel better, or if there’s even a difference for you.

I’m also wondering if anyone else in this “mature and dead-clever ladies” club is currently doing ZC or thinking about it.

(Carol Bassingthwaighte) #279

I’m eating lots. I admit to being quite reliant on bacon and eggs and more eggs. I get my veggies in too with loads of butter. I take spoonfuls of raw coconut butter if I’m feeling just a bit hungry between meals. I long for boundless energy and have never had it, but the tiredness on keto is intense. Being new I’m not sure if my original post went just to you or to the whole community.

Both really, but that’s OK. That way you’ll get some more ideas.
