Tom Seest's Latest Extended Learning (Fasting / Feasting) Experiment

(Tom Seest) #1

I’ve had a private Facebook group where I’ve been posting this information for some time, but as many of us know; Facebook can be a frustrating tool to use. Many people have enjoyed my various learning experiments. I try to predict and control their direction, but life happens, and I can’t always do what I’d like to do.

But, my main goal is to learn more about what my limits are, my capabilities are, and how my body responds to various life experiences. Hopefully, my experiments in learning will trigger ideas for you, and you’ll start your own or modify your own learning experiments and experiences. It truly spices up life.

Three weeks ago, I came down with pneumonia which has been something that’s plagued me for most of my life. This is the first time I’ve had it since I went Keto two years ago, but it ended up causing me to change some of my plans. I’m not completely healed, but I’m doing much better.

While I’ve still got a little bit of the bronchitis left in me, I’m pretty much back to normal now. It took me right at 3 weeks to get rid of it, which included a pretty normal to heavy work schedule. I probably could have gotten rid of it more quickly had I been able to take more time off work, but I didn’t. My resting Heart Rate has been crazy high during my illness, so I’m looking forward to this fast, and watching my numbers return to normal.

So, my beloved wife left town today at 1:00 PM, for a much needed vacation with her lovely sister. I decided this would be a good opportunity for me to resume my fasting / feasting experimentation. I’m not totally back to normal but I feel like I’m not stressing my body by fasting now.

I won’t be doing the egg / butter / cheese fast at this point because the blood testing I wanted to do would be far more expensive than what I can afford right now (I had some off time due to the illness).
So, I’m embarking on a 40 day fasting experiment which will include some eating of protein / fat on occasions, just to keep the thing going. This will put me at about 40 days when I get to Low Carb 2017 at Breckenridge Colorado, where I will spend some time eating some Dude Fude (food).

I know many of you are experts and will want to tell me that I’m not fasting if I’m consuming food at all, etc. I’m glad you have your opinions, and your own definitions, but I’m not interested in them. I’m very, very aware of the various forms of fasting, and while I welcome constructive input, I’m not interested in the “Fasting Police” showing up to bust me because I’m not doing a “true fast”.:oncoming_police_car:

I will be doing at least some blood testing and DEXA’s during the fast, but it won’t be nearly as frequent due to the financial costs.

I hope you all are having a new year.

Be well, and feel free to post pictures of food porn in here to torture me while I fast.

I will be updating this thread on a daily basis with photos, etc. during the upcoming 40 days.

I’ll be logging all of my blood tests, etc using this spreadsheet:

@tdseest,
This is very cool. I have a lot of respect for people who constantly push the envelop and test new things, in a controlled fashion, to learn new things with the aim of continuous improvement. This sounds like a great test plan. I will follow your progress with great interest. Thank you for sharing.

Welcome to the dance. I do a lot of strange things, so it’ll be a wild ride. But, I usually have a reason for what I’m doing.

I’m 100% behind you @tdseest, good luck and thank you for sharing this!

I love seeing the columns for blood glucose, blood ketones and the Glucose:Ketone Index (GKI).

I confess to being a data junkie, I love seeing the results of stuff like this, even when I try to keep in mind what you do may not work the same for me, I am still jazzed to see what can be accomplished. Will be watching!

2017-01-14 - 8:15 PM - 7.25 Hours Fasted - Readings

These were my beginning readings for this fast at the 7.25 hour mark.

I’m surprised that the Blood Glucose reading was this low as it has been elevated during my illness. Also pleasantly surprised with my Ketone readings. Blood pressure was elevated but not surprising either, given my current health.

Do you know why you are plagued by pneumonia? I had my seventh and eighth bouts this year and the doctors have no idea why I contract it so often. It’s always the right lung and I was hoping Keto would help me avoid this in the future.

Welcome to the dance Bill. I have a Heads Up Health account, but I spend far too much of my time with data capture and data logging at this point to keep it up to date. Maybe I can use some technical skills some day, and use CSV, Excel or API data to get it up to date.

Thank you for following and welcome.

I suspect that it may be either due to my environment growing up, being born as a premature baby, or related to my early chronic asthma problems. But, I don’t know for sure, and I’m not sure I ever will.

I used to get treatment for it using various Anti Biotics like ZPacks, etc. but they never did really prove effective.

Now, I treat it (My wife does) using various oils like Oregano, Peppermint, and with Garlic Olive Oil Coconut Oil rubs, which seem more effective in helping in knock it down.

2017-01-14 - 9:00 PM - 8 Hours Fasted - Bicycle Ride

For those that are new here, I have a bicycle trainer setup that I can ride indoors. I use a Wahoo KICKR trainer, a Wahoo TICKR heart rate belt, the Kinomap app for virtual rides all over the world, and the Cyclemeter and Strava apps for logging all my rides. I also log the ride with my Apple Watch, as a backup.

I survived my first ride since December 21st. Heart Rate was in Zone 4 and Zone 5 proving that I’m not quite at 100 % yet. Normally, for a slow easy ride like this, my heart rate would vary between 110 and 130. In this case, it varied between 150 and 190. But, I felt good and didn’t cough up a lung. I’m hoping my conditioning continues to improve this week.

Speech and swallowing therapist here. Have you had a modified barium swallow study to see if you’re aspirating food and/or liquid?

(Tom Seest) #13

No I have not. It is very possible, as I’ve always had difficulty due to horrible teeth.

2017-01-14 - 11:30 PM Readings - 10.5 Hours Fasted - After my bicycle ride.

Noticed that my Blood Pressure dropped way down after the easy bicycle ride. Also, Blood Glucose levels are now going up as a response to the light, but stressful (due to illness) exercise.

2017-01-14 - 11:55 PM - 11 hours Fasted - Final Apple Watch Readings

I use an Apple Watch, and it measures this stuff for me throughout the day.

Here are my final numbers for the day.

2017-01-15 - 9:30 AM - 20.5 Hours Fasted - Morning Readings

This is one of the few times in the last three weeks of illness that my resting heart rate for the night was below a 100. Also, I didn’t have any huge periods of time where I was awake, so that is improving too. No more late night coughing fits. So, I’m definitely trending in the right direction. Blood Glucose levels are still a little high for my liking but I suspect that I still have some healing to do. Blood Pressure seems to have returned to normal over night.

Happy to hear you’re on the mend  I’m excited to see you move your learning posts to the forums.

2017-01-15 - 3:30 PM - 26.5 Hours Fasted - Latest Readings

(Tony Sheldon) #19

I’m very interested in following along this experiment. I just got done doing a 6 day fast which was the longest one for me. I really like the geeky spreadsheet too.

2017-01-15 - 8:20 PM Ride - 31.25 Hours Fasted

Numbers are very similar to last night. Heart rate is way to high, but I’m not uncomfortable in any way. Rode extremely slow for me. Never uncomfortable. Probably still ill in some way.
