Prednisone is evil! Help!?!

(Buffy) #1

I was started on a high dose of prednisone this evening. Within an hour I was bloated. I had a light keto supper. Ate rill satiated. Then I get up, get dressed, and got out to find candy. Prednisone cravings are from hell. You will sell your grand mommy for sugar. I thought I had hit the adapted phase. From other posts of mine you will see where I am naturally doing IF & then all hell breaks loose due to collateral damage from cancer treatment.

How in God’s name do I stasy in ketosis while dealing with a heavy, heavy steroid dose. Evil f*ing stuff! Any help is greatly appreciated

I am no pro, but quick thoughts…drink herbal tea (sugar free just a nice taste), have some bone broth, maybe make some fat bombs that you can substitute in on occasion. I know prednisone is a good/evil thing. I really wish you the best of luck!!

Really raises your appetite I know. An extra challenge.

You have my deepest sympathy! You’re right, it’s the very devil of a drug.

Thanks guys & gals. Your support & ideas are wonderful! Actually managed to sleep last night. I know that sleep for me will start to become chaotic as well. Will definitely try out your ideas, Amanda! Love herbal tea. Esp the sour ones!
Thanks again all!

Prednisone is evil (lol), I agree.

Steroids have a very wide range of effects on people. I personally avoid it at all costs because it keeps me up all night long.

Hi Buffy. Hopefully, you will have a similar experience to what I’m having. I started on a high Prednisone dose due to some back problems. After 3 carbs, my sugar went up to 187. My ketones dropped to 0.2. So I’m now in pain and depression because everything I worked 12 weeks for went out the window. I did what every red blooded steroid induced psychotic would do, I ate everything on my list of things I missed. Funny thing though. A week later, my numbers still say I’m no longer in keto but my body is still acting like it’s burning fat. I’m losing wait and it’s fat, not muscle. I don’t have the energy but that is probably more because of the chronic pain and not diet. Hang in there, ride it out and maybe there’ll be less damage control than you think,

Wal-Mart brand sugar free jello with whipped cream in it. Good luck and stay strong

Believe me, if I had any kind of choice, I would not be on a 100mg dose of prednisone as I sit here reading your very kind responses at 0139am. Lol. I already have wicked insomnia; tis not helping. Lol

Bud, I think you have set me mind free! I have been berating myself for committing any wobble or daliance. Yet, Debbie’s jello yumminess sounds positively divine! Thanks to you both!!!

Omg I got some prednisone for flu. I think it was worse than the flu. Evil stuff for me…

Eat lots of leafy greens and hard cheeses. That stuff steals the calcium from your bones. If you have to supplement, use calcium citrate it is better absorbed than other forms of calcium supplements.

Hope it is just a short round (under 10 days). Hubby had a heck of a time when he was taking it.

I fight like a maniac whenever the docs mention the word in my hearing. I have bipolar, also, which ups the ante. So not only ate all my hormones at the carnival, but my bipolar gets in on the act! Bleeding hell!

My length of stasy in steroid ville all depends on how soon my pituitary gland starts to begin not being so inflamed & enlarged. I am dealing with migraine strength headaches almost constantly. When it starts to shrink, the head pain should improve. Then, and only then, do we know we ate headed, I love puns, in the right direction. Thank you for the tips!

Just a bit of an update. I weighed this morning and I’m down . 86 of a pound since Thursday! Epic! I usually just gain & gain. Have stuck to the program. Also, with no planning, fasted 36hrs, breaking it a few minutes ago with freshly made egg salad. Thanks mum, for the good grub! Even mentally I am feeling fairly even keeled. Lovin’ to keto!

(Karen) #15

Proud of you commitment in the face of hardship! Congrats on your loss.

Thanks, Karen! the support is wonderful!

I have been to the doctors’! The endocrinologist is hands off for the moment, preferring to see what pituitary function I have after coming down from the hellishness of the steroids. My oncologist has agreed to begin the taper down of the prednisone. Effective immediately. Praise the Lord and pass the bacon! It’ll take about a month to get off of it. Not safe to remove any more quickly. They are talking about me resuming the clinical trial. I’m on the fence to be honest. I have a month to decide.

Request a different steroid. I can NOT handle prednisone and refuse to take it. I have been given other steroids that help me just as much and I don’t get moon face or bloating. Be blunt with your physician and ask for something that will work better with your body.

(Buffy) #19

Thanks for the input! I’m on the taper off period. It will take a couple more weeks. But, going forward, I will see if I have other choices.

Gosh, I did that “steroid” treatment so many times…actually learned…up your potassium, and drink plenty water…stay keto, enjoy your nights, don’t fight it…find something to do…you will be awake and frustrated otherwise.

I have ms…pretty benign since 2012, PRAISE GOD…Dr. tells me I’m probably gonna stay where I am and not have any more relapses…I’m hoping ketosis makes is FIRM, no more exacerbations.
