I know everyone is different but it’s so easy to be discouraged after more than two weeks and no weight loss. Initially I lost 4 lbs very quickly but it’s all back. Clothes are not looser. I’m producing ketones (pee urinalysis) so I’m hitting the carb mark. I’d like to hear from people about when they got results. I’m 48 YO female… guess that doesn’t help LOL! Thanks!

Welcome! Everyone’s experience is different. In general, the men seem to lose pounds more easily, especially at first, whereas the women often have a month or two of the hormones’ being sorted out before the weight loss really commences. But there is a lot of individual variation, and even for those who lose a lot of fat fairly quickly the pattern of loss is never linear.

A well-formulated ketogenic diet is primarily about metabolic health, with fat loss as a secondary effect. Two weeks is not enough time for your body to have become adapted to this way of eating yet, so give yourself a lot more time before giving up.

Not only that, but calorie-conscious women often find that, when they start eating ketogenically, and especially if they take to heart the bit about eating to satiety, their body will put on lean mass at the same time as it sheds fat. This confounds the scale, which disheartens them, so we always have to advise keeping an eye on what your clothing is doing, along with the scale. (This is purely a cultural phenomenon, I believe. If we men were as motivated to watch our weight in this society, I suspect the same thing would happen to us.)

So the tl/dr is: Don’t give up! It’s far too soon to worry that you’re doing it wrong.

But if you’d like to post your personal details (sex, age, weight, goal weight, height) and diet (every food you usually eat), we’d be happy to comment and critique, and offer suggestions. We don’t agree on all the details, but we are good at spotting hidden carbs and stuff like that.

Stick around, relax, and have fun! And above all, keto on!

P.S.–I see you posted some information already. Forgive the standard spiel!

If you give us a little more info we can help you make some changes if needed. Also, do you have hormonal issues? This alone can slow weightloss. It takes time…

No issues that I know of. I’m wanting to hear some other stories of when the weight loss began and overall journey

I started low carb Sept 2017 at 220 lbs. 144.5 today. You asked for a timeline.

This is since March 2018, through today:

Hi there I am in my mid 40s and it feels like it is a painful process. At our age we have hormone issues that our younger lady friends and men do not. I am almost 10 weeks in and have lost 16 pounds. Some weeks I lose 1 or 2pounds, others nothing on the scale but I lose inches. Everyone is different.

How long before you started to notice results?

(MelissaH) #8

My journey started Aug 2018, at 160. I lost between 1-5 lbs a week some weeks, other times nothing. It’s been very up and down. I change things up constantly. Tracking has been very hepful in seeing what foods or times of eating make me feel my best and keep the scale moving in the right direction.

19 lbs in 5 months. 50 year old woman with (initially) 80 lbs to lose. I lost 7lbs of water weight at first. Then I bounced around for a couple of months but have lost an average of 1lb per week. That average is slowing down this month.

This thread, if well answered, will be both depressing and affirming. I’m sure you know that the experience of a man (or younger woman) who loses 50lbs in 6 months, isn’t relevant to an older woman, necessarily though.

@cmf1225 for me I lost 4 pounds 1st week and literally nothing for another month. Then started around 1 pound a week on average after that.
I also have been doing yoga 3x a week for several years but with a full carb diet kept gaining weight. Now I do intermittent fasting where I eat from noon until around 7PM, and I only eat until satisfied then stop. Once I hit fat adaption around 5 weeks in, my caloric intake naturally dropped quite a bit. I am just not hungry. I still track everything in an app Carb Manager, but I rarely eat my recommendation of 1250 calories a day. Eating until satisfied I only average around 900 to 1000 a day. I just try to make sure I eat enough protein and fat so I do not lose muscle.
I have lost 16 pounds but also and more importantly, I have lost over 18 inches overall in size! I am still doing yoga 3x a week and ride a stationary bike 3x a week for 30 min. It has been by far the easiest thing I have ever done in my life to lose weight.

I just can’t believe cutting out sugar and carbs is not giving me more immediate weight-loss results. I’m so skeptical about all the fats it’s making me paranoid that I’m just making myself fatter.

Hello Started end of May 2018 to current. 7 months and right around 40 lbs… it’s been anything but linear! More important off any high blood pressure medicines and all diabetic medicines. Wearing single digit jean sizes and happily enjoying life!! Keto is now my WOE if I continue to lose that’s great but I am not planning on any dietary changes…KCKO!

What was your diet before starting this journey? Your body might have a lot of cleaning up to do. I know it’s frustrating to not see results. I put my scale away for several months lol it’s not natural for the body to lose weight. Trusting the process and patience is key here😊

Me… I only really wanted to lose 7-8 pounds. I’m in my late 30’s, female.

As you can see, it was very slow progress. I could tell I was getting a little smaller but not much. What really made a difference though, and allowed me to buy some smaller clothing, was going practically zero carb.

You honestly have to trust the process. I am “doing keto“ at the prescription of a bariatric/obesity specialist. You really can’t question the advice about fat because there is a lot of research and personal experience to back it up. I recently sat in a talk with Amy Berger about how many people truly are diabetic or prediabetic without meeting the standard benchmarks. Our insulin is working so hard to deal with the sugar/carbs were pumping into our bodies that we’re creating all kinds of other problems for ourselves. I’ve had to admit it, it’s not all about the weight. I never felt that I was “huge“, even at 80 pounds overweight (I’m tall). However a recent liver scan actually shows that I have mild fatty liver. What a blow to my sense of self! I was eating fruits and vegetables, little processed food, lots of nice whole-grain bread… I wasn’t doing myself any favors.

I’m almost the same, I started in mid December I’ve lost 18lbs or so. I turned 50 last week. I started at 202 I’m 185.5. In February I only lost 4.5 lbs. I have continued to educate myself and feel pretty positive about my experience. I’m doing my second fast right now I’m at hour 40, going to 48.

I started late Dec 2018, down 29 lb so far. It’s averaged to be 3.4 lb/week. BUT it has NOT been linear and consistent. Sometimes I’ve actually gained a pound or two and it hang around for a few days and then I lose it again. Other times, it’s been several days in a row of nothing…just stagnant and in the same place.

I think that it’s easy to compare oneself to other people’s weight loss, but everyone is different. Your body operates a little differently than the person sitting next to you.

I lost sixty pounds over a period of several months, and my weight has been stable for the past 12 months or more. I lost enough fat to be fitting in a trouser size that is six inches smaller (42" to 36"). My body composition seems to be still changing, even though my weight is stable, because I can now wear trousers that were too tight to button up, 14 months ago.

While I would enjoy losing a further sixty pounds of fat, my primary motivation for eating ketogenically is to avoid becoming a diabetic, a goal which I have already achieved.

(Christine Flack) #19

when did you notice some results? there has to be a point where if i am no losing weight i step back and figure out what is wrong. i don’t think I am at that point yet, but curious when others had that ah-ha moment that Keto works!

(Scott) #20

twenty pounds lost over three months and have maintained since over the next four months. I am tweaking some things and getting a little movement but I am only ten pounds off my ideal weight. I have lots of time and enjoy my WOE so no worries at all. KCKO
