New(ish) and Now Struggling

(Martin Arnold) #82

This is getting out of hand.

I ate 50g cream before retiring, as i was hungry, it was enough to leave me slightly nauseous. I couldn’t eat anymore. Simply telling me to stuff myself is ridiculous. If I’m full I’m not going to eat more. Telling me to eat 2700 calories is absurd.

It’s got nothing to do with stickiness. I ate 175g of fat yesterday, at least. It didn’t change anything. Two hours after retiring i woke up absolutely crippled with hunger, as I have for over a week. This should not be happening. It is clearly not an issue of fat otherwise this would have happened during the first two weeks when i was fine.

Why do you keep telling me to eat until full when that is what I am doing. The problem is staying full, and yet i was eating fewer calories before i started keto and i didn’t have this issue. So clearly there is something unique to what and how i’m eating now that is responsible. For all i know my body may not react to fat very well.

What is wrong with bacon or pork? They are meats that have fat in them. What else would I eat for protein?

Hey @Martin_Arnold.
You are getting many responses because we truly want you to get this. We know it works. In the three years I have been committed to the ketogenic diet, I have read an enormous amount of good science and given support to hundreds (thousands if you include podcasts).
Still, I am no expert. None of us are. But we DO know where to send you so that you can educate yourself.
I have to point out I have never heard of someone not being able to become fat adapted, there were two elite endurance athletes who had trouble with fat adaptation I read about, and it was clearly because they had less than 10% bodyfat. Their nutritional requirements for fat were very large.

I am pretty sure this is not you as you have mentioned you have “plenty of bodyfat”.

So here’s my suggestion. Stop what you’re doing. Go to www.2ketodudes.com and start from podcast number one. Read all the related science after each podcast (linked on the .com).
Buy the book “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living” by Phinney and Volek. Study it. Carefully. It is the keto bible.
If you want to change your life, you will have to do most of the work yourself.
A topic thread you created on this forum isn’t going to have all your answers.

You studying independently will.

This sounds more like an electrolyte issue to me. If you’re woozy after eating and having unexplained hunger, are you sure your electrolytes are on point?

Hi there,

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been lurking, reading this thread for a bit as I have had hunger pangs as well (I’m about four weeks into keto). Probably not as intensely as @Martin_Arnold describes, but I certainly noticed them.

I think it’s hard to underestimate just how much fat-phobia and the fear of generally eating too much affects us. It took a long time to learn that it was okay, and I’m still learning over and over, that I can eat fat and it doesn’t matter. Permission to eat Marmite and butter on cheese slices, though, is the best thing in the world.

One issue I have with hunger pangs is that I take medication that messes up my leptin and ghrelin levels. I could eat a cavalry of horses and still be hungry, but it doesn’t last for very long, and if I’ve eaten too much, I’ll get sick in a few hours after eating. So I drink water after meals when I know I’ve had enough, and that helps. You should, after all, be drinking water like it’s your job and your hobby.

One final thing nobody has mentioned (that I could see) is that if you find butter on your veggies too much, there are loads of awesome sauces you can make or buy that are low or no carb but have tons of fat in them. They’re so tasty you won’t want anything else for ages.

Rj.

I eat an extra heaped tspn of salt per day, added to water throughout the day.
I take magnesium chelate and potassium supplement as well.

(Martin Arnold) #87

I do drink water.

I do all these things. I eat a meal that has a lot of fat and then I’m full. I can’t eat more than I can manage.

I’m following reddit macros from r/keto. If they are faulty then surely other people would have said so.

This is not a situation that can continue. Being asked to consume almost 3000 calories is not practical.

(Martin Arnold) #88

I don’t have the money to buy these books, if there is relevant information within might I ask that you point me to it directly. I really don’t have the time to wade through hours of videos and texts, please be reasonable

(roxanna) #89

I know for me I have to take 2.5 teaspoons of salt minimum, more if I’m sweating a lot. I take 1.5 teaspoons of potassium. I take 800+ of magnesium (different chelates). If I do any less I get dizzy and lightheaded and even with all the supplementation, I still can’t do up and down exercises at the gym easily or I get a little woozy.

(Martin Arnold) #90

I don’t really get like that, and I don’t see any connection between hunger and electrolyte deficiency.

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #91

Please be reasonable? You sound as if I am obligated to spend more time explaining.

I’m not.

I really don’t have the time to explain to you hours of videos and text. If you cannot afford the book I suggested, the information is on their blog.
You spend a lot of time here asking questions, spend some time there reading.

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #92

Who asked you to?

And if you don’t want to continue, stop.

???

(Martin Arnold) #93

I’m not asking you to explain the entire content, I’m asking for the salient points that address my issues. I don’t have time to go through all this - assuming there are answers there.

(Martin Arnold) #94

Someone above suggested i eat such an amount of fat that i reach 2700 calories

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #95

You have the answers. Use them or move on @Martin_Arnold

Anything else begins to appear as trolling.

(Martin Arnold) #96

Could you at least point me to the podcast episode that discusses this?

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #97

No doubt it’s in the first podcast about fat adaptation. Also search “fat adaptation” on “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living” blog.

Hang in there. This takes patience.

(Martin Arnold) #98

Which one is the one about fat adaptation. There are over 50 hour long podcasts, could you be more specific?

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #99

The. First. One.

Podcast. Number. One.
“Getting STARTED.”

Here’s. the. link.

(Crow T. Robot) #100

I think you’ve done all you can do. If this is u/signoftheserpent from Reddit (99.999% sure it is), you’re never going to get anywhere. He’s all over the place and is now asking r/Paleo for advice how to reintroduce carbs. You can’t help someone who doesn’t actually want it.

Thank you @Chris_W
