What really blows people’s minds is “Fat Based Nutrition”. That’s what I use. I take them head on.
My son just started. Do his macros look good?
I like that. I don’t mind the battle. In fact I’m gearing up for a bbq tomorrow that I know a couple of my vegan friends will be at that always insist I’m killing myself.
I haven’t seen them since switching mostly to carnivore. I’m very much looking forward to explaining how I’m the yin to their yang and that I eat pretty much everything they don’t, and nothing that they do.
No offense but that’s not my practice.
I run strictly at maintain, my weight and BF are still on the downward slide. When I increase my intake of fat I tend too loose more. When I increase my intake of protein I tend to gain if it is over more than one day. For me a constant 500 or more calorie deficit would only lead to low weight loss if not stalling at this point and low energy for more than one or two days tops.
So if your ketones are 0 ergo not in ketosis and by default not in lipolysis, could you fat adapt? I view ketosis and lipolysis as two sides of the same coin, they both work together. But since most if not all people cannot measure lipolysis its hard to make it tangible would you not agree?
There is not much “evidence” for a number of things we all contend, like the brain only runs on ketones only when present, or that GNG is only demand driven not really the scope of the advice in the newbies section. The purpose of the statement is both blunt and simple keep your ketones up there and things will happen. I never said anything about the vast amount of energy not coming from fat, I am a firm believer in almost all energy coming from fat.
IMO, you’re still showing signs of derangement. It can take years to normalize things. I’m not sure of what you mean by that when you increase protein you tend to gain, are you talking about water weight? It’s pretty tough to gain fat when lipolytic.
Lipolysis drives Ketosis. Just because you’re not showing any doesn’t mean they aren’t being produced and burned. The liver also uses glycerol as the substrate for gluconeogenesis, so if that is occurring, you may not be producing as many ketones.
Again, it’s not so much adapting in to eating fat, but adapting out of eating carbs.
Hey sorry for my late response, finals got me busy, but I am done now. Now I started keto at late 14 years of age for mental clarity and health benefit while taking advantage of being able too eat at a caloric surplus and not pack on as much fat since I’ve been lean bulking or just eating as much as possible while on keto guidelines too build muscle. As for me I am 5,5 and weigh 130 lbs. I personally for muscle building would play around with protein macros as I do admit taking in >300 grams of protein <18 carbs and <150 fat one day and testing positive on a keto stick and felt fine. In fact I recovered after a hard squat day a little quicker when I did a higher protein day. If your son tends too excersize that same day drop a little fat macros and replace em with protein and see how the scale changes? But otherwise his macros look pretty authentic for keto!
No worries^^ Thank you for responding and congrats on finishing your finals! We’ll keep that in mind about protein for when he starts working out.
Since Friday (day 6 on Keto) he has completely lost his appetite. He can’t get over how weird it is to not be hungry. He’s a big guy and was able to eat quite a bit. And now it’s next to nothing. Is that normal? I keep reading to eat when you’re hungry and don’t when you’re not. He’s been drinking BPC in the mornings but won’t eat lunch. He’s also skipped dinner once.
He weighed in on Sunday and lost 5 lbs. the first week. We’re guessing he’s in ketosis. How long did it take you to get fat adapted? Is it ok that he’s skipping meals or will it slow the process down? Is it too early for IF?
Sorry for all the questions. He’s keto journey is completely different than mine and even his older brother. Both my older son and I were able to eat our meals just fine for the first 6 weeks until we started losing our appetites.

He sounds already fat adapted, and I would say encourage him to eat only when he’s hungry. If he’s not ingesting food, he will be losing bodyfat as he will be using that for fuel.
Sounds to me he is well on the road to a fabulous keto life. I wish I had understood keto when I was 18. Damned CW.
Cheers

Wow. If he is fat adapted, that sure was quick! Is it even possible? He doesn’t have any cravings for pasta, chips, sweets, etc. This kid could eat 3 boxes of mac and cheese at one time. He’s never been on a diet before and I thought he might cheat a bit. But he’s been awesome and he’s really motivated to lose some weight. Thanks for your reply!
The younger someone is, and the less metabolically deranged, the quicker it can happen.
It certainly is a very quick time to become fat adapted. 2 thoughts come to mind:
- He is young, and probably still has a very flexible metabolism, I have heard of younger people getting fat adapted quickly.
- Just a thought: is he really not hungry, or is his high motivation for change making him turn down meals and his excuse is he’s not hungry. If it’s the latter, it’s a losing strategy. If he really is not hungry, then I would say he must be fat adapted, or else his body would be screaming for fuel.
Cheers

There’s definitely been a change in him. He seems really restless and is sleeping less. He keeps saying he “feels weird” lol He is just not hungry.
Both of these suggest to me higher energy levels, most likely from the drop in the drowsy making carbs. Sounds good to me!!
Cheers

His hunger will return, possibly before he has lost all the weight he wants as the balancing of insulin production and insulin resistance reasserts itself. Of course at his age and lower derangement, he may well only regain appetite very near to his goal weight/composition.
The important thing will be to learn the lesson of carbs in moderation (probably the 100g level give or take treats, forever) rather than just use keto as a yo-yo diet mechanism. He clearly didn’t win the genetic lottery of high carb tolerance and needs to understand that to have a good metabolic life from here on out.
He’s not fat adapted. He hasn’t yet even depleted all his glycogen, so I doubt he’s even become lipolytic. However, he’s on his way. What he’s experiencing now is a strong leptin response, which is very good. And yes, he should not eat unless hungry. Things will go much faster that way.
It’ll take a few days for him to feel normal, once glucagon, lipase, and bile production ramps up. Don’t be surprised if he sleeps less. If you could get him to exercise, even just walking, it’d be better. Do you have a dog? Good reason to walk.
On the topic of macros,
My fitness pal uses gross carbs for the macros percentage, not net. I know net carbs is what counts for keto so my question is:
If my macros say 10 percent(at 50g) but half of those are fiber so the net is (25g), does this not mean that my actual percent is 5% for carbs. Would I add that on to one of the other macros or ignore? Confusing
Yes so doesn’t that effect the other 2 macros. Would protein and fat go up or would I add the 5 percent to those?
The 5% Carb macro is a limit, not a requirement. Initially, keep’em as low as possible.
Ok thanks. Any tips for upping fat? Most meat I used tend to be high protein and some fat. I add oils and such but I feels like they are so high in calories and fat without the satisfying feeling of a chunk on food
I just ate a brat with two tablespoons avacado oil mayo. That ups the fat considerably. Or you could add butter, cheese, or a cream based sauce to the meat. Last couple days I had a pork chop swimming in a blue cheese sauce made with sour cream an HWC plus blue cheese of course.
Or you could end your meal with a dessert style fat bomb. I love to have a few tablespoons of marscapone cheese with 1/4 tsp vanilla, a dash of cinnamon and a drop of Stevia mixed together. Just eat it by the spoonful. This helps up your fat %’s and offsets the protein in the meat.
