Patience is seriously the hardest part, imo. Just have to keep a list of the non scale victories & remember how long my metabolism’s been deranged.
May 2018 IF/EF chat - all welcome
Congratulations! Can’t wait to join you there in Onderland!
and Liz…totally on the patience. ugh. lol. Yesterday’s weigh in I was UP. Not the direction I wanted the scale to go. Thankfully, my weigh in came with other numbers too. My fat loss was 4.5#s for the week and my lean muscle mass was up over 7 pounds. Not at all sure how that works because there wasn’t any significant exercise. This week’s numbers reinforced the Process. KCKO has new meaning
I weigh myself daily to innoculate myself from constant fluctuations & only look at long term trends as having any significance.
This spreadsheet is everything for those of us who watch the scale daily, Liz. Thanks for sharing. It’s not a bad thing to weigh daily as long as We don’t expect the weight loss line to trend steadily downward. That’s just not how it really happens, and those of us who are serious about fixing what’s broken need to look at multiple measures of change - weight is just one of them - and look at trends, with understanding that fluctuations do not = failure.
Good morning! Just checking in…
I’m at hour 41 of my fast. Feeling pretty good about myself right now! My quick observations:
-
From about hour 24 (mid-afternoon) until I went to bed last night I was pretty hungry. Not unmanageable (obviously, since I managed it!) but definitely feeling pangs and wanting to eat.
-
I woke up this morning totally NOT hungry. By the time I got downstairs and made my BPC I was definitely feeling hungry again, but it amazes me that I went a good hour or so without feeling any hunger this morning.
-
I’ve spent the past week or so in the “trace” or “small” squares on the pee sticks. This morning I was solid “moderate.” I know I’m not supposed to make a big deal about that, but it’s a big psychological win for me.
-
I was finally about 2 pounds lighter this morning - after having really not budged at all since I started 2 1/2 weeks ago.
I’m still toying with when I’m going to break the fast. Going to play it by ear I guess. But all in all, my first real fast was a definite success! Thanks!
Awesome victory, Susan! Building your fasting ‘muscle’ is a major key to success!
In the hopes that it will help others on the journey, here’s what my trend line looks like since I started graphing via Qardio in mid February.
I’m no superstar, but I am fighting major insulin resistance. My current HOMA-IR = 2.6; heaven knows what it was two months before I started this WOE. Cummins and Gerber say that ideal is under 1. Nevertheless, given that I saw evidence that my metabolism was breaking down even further when I went through menopause in 2016, I am pretty thrilled to have discovered a means to heal - even if it’s still slower than I’d like.
Cool, Victoria. Insulin resistance is such a huge thing for so many of us. Yes, progress is usually not in a “straight line” manner, yet it is heartening that we are still going in the right direction overall. I shudder to think about the past, when I was just getting worse and worse, all the time.
That is such a pretty number! Congratulations. Enjoy it and stay focused. We are proud of you
I feel that your path is going to be similiar to mine, so I watch your progress with great interest. I can only dream of getting to 165. Maybe that is your phinney weight and that is why it is so hard to push past it? Just a thought. Keep logging those NSV’s. It’s important.
I am in hour 120 of a 168 hour fast. Today is going to be broth and keto aid and maybe a coffee with a tablespoon of cream. Loving the way I feel. Weight is awesome. However, I am starting to experience a couple of the EF symptoms that always hit me about this time, such as slight slight dizziness when leaning upside down.
PSA for those of you who are deep into a EF right now. DO NOT DANCE HARD TO K-POP while fasting. You will end up dizzy. LOL!
KCFO on my friends.
I weigh every single day. But its more because I like information. I love knowing how my weight changes when tracked against what I eat. It is also important to me to not have too many surprises. Losing weight is hard and I don’t want to keep doing it over and over. So if I know that I creeped up 5 pounds, I can take action to make sure that it doesn’t continue to go up. I gained 28 pounds in 3 months, mostly because i wasn’t keeping a close eye on the scale. If I had been watching my weight more closely, I would have seen a direct correlation between my bad eating and weight gain. That would have probably scared me back into compliance much sooner.
I agree with the tracking of the weight. Just don’t let it stress you out. Getting an idea of what does cause you to drift upwards and downwards is a great idea.
Good luck with the rest of your fasting.

It may be my Phinney weight but I am still overweight so I’m going to forge ahead. No one who saw me naked would accuse me of unrealistic expectations/goals I think of it more as a resting spot as my body gets used to the new size. I have seen as low as 159 (fasted) and so far, on this Keto journey, whatever low weight I see, I eventually get back there over time. I don’t mind if it’s a ton of work & patience to get to a lower weight, I am determined and I’m Keto for life so…
I too like the daily scale information though it mostly tells me about water weight fluctuations. Over time it tells me about fat loss.
Also I take perverse pleasure in holding myself accountable, lol, logging even the foods I ate that weren’t in my plan for the day (adjusts food diary from 4 pieces of bacon to 12). My first instinct is to leave it off, but I think living in denial is how I got to be 100 pounds overweight in the first place so I am trying to be more honest with myself and connect consequences to actions, so I hear you.
Meanwhile, as we have discovered, what makes this way of life sustainable and long term is BACON! No, that’s not what I meant to write, it’s FASTING! When we stray or the macros don’t work anymore, or whatever, we have FASTING. Now I can live confidently knowing I’ll never be 260 pounds again because I know what to do when the scale starts to work against me.
And one more note, I cannot tell you how SURREAL being 165 is, it is WILD, man! Wild.
I haven’t posted anything for a while. We had a trip out of town last weekend (Dallas!) and as a post-trip detox I’m back to 20/4 I.F. during the weekday workdays. Feeling great.
Started fast last night (12 hours ago), headed to Tuesday evening. 72 hours
I think that’s what you described at the end is what happened to me. I went for 4 1/2 days (my first time) and couldn’t quite handle it and went on a binge for about 3 days before I could get back on the wagon. I think I will feed myself normal keto for a week or so and then try the alternate day fasting and see what happens. Thanks!
Rusty, I am fasting also, I’m nearing 15 hrs. I am only planning 36 hr. fast but those usually turn into 40-46 hrs. due to how my hunger just doesn’t happen all that quickly.
I had a Cinco de Mayo treat, a fajita steak salad bowl with guacamole. The restaurant I go to uses lard for their fajitas, so I think I loaded up on some good fat for this fast.
