Lots of weight loss and then... Nothing

I am in my 7th week of eating keto and doing IF (16/8). I read 5 books on the subject, I looked up every video from Dr. Berg, read Jason Wu about IF, I feel I am doing things right, … I have lost 14 lbs in 4 weeks. I was so excited that at last something was working… But since then nothing is happening… 3 weeks now and no weight lost, I actually gain 1 lb back:(!!! So disappointed and discourage… I have done so many attempt to loose weight in the past 4 years with little or no results this feels like another failed attempt… I want to loose 40 lbs total so another 26 lbs. My initial weight was 186 lbs. i am healthy I was running 5-10 km until last year when I got so discourage of seeing no results I stopped training. I have not had keto flu, bad breath maybe a bit but no other signs. I have only lost water which scares me since I can easily take on 5 lbs by doing little cheats (2-3 glasses of wine and that is it). I have cut 100% alcohol and everything cabs… just eating vegetables, proteins, cheese and fats and move to 80% organic. Is it normal i have no signs that I am in ketosis, and not loosing weight for 3 weeks…?

Need encouragement and understanding…

HORMONES! Save up to do a comprehensive hormone urine test. Also when I read “strict” I wonder what that means. To me this has been a journey of learning to eat intuitively and to ask myself questions and then searching out the answers through different resources and through experimenting. If you have gotten the basics and have continued to follow that for 7 weeks without learning more or trying to make you diet as nutritionally dense as possible then you are not going (in most cases) get the most out of ketosis. Everyone comes to this lifestyle with very different health issues and goals and there is not a one size fits all eating plan. For example if you are getting daily intake of dairy products that might not be good for you. Or if your eating too little protein you may be experiencing negative outcomes. I started out trying to make recipes that were similar to what I ate before. I am now eating almost exclusively carnivore. I know dairy does not work well with my body so I mostly avoid it and have small amounts maybe once a week. Sometimes our lifetime of bad diet is going to take longer and more effort than 2 months. I listen to a variety of podcast and try to learn more and more. I also try different things to see how I feel. If your interested in more podcast to listen to while driving, cleaning or waiting here are a few of my favorites. Naturally Nourished, Low Carb Cardiologist, The Carnivore Cast, Human Performance Outliers, The Keto Answers, Ketogeek, Paleo Solutions and the Muscle Expert Podcast.

Thank you for the podcast recommendations! Will for sure listen to them! I agree I have done the same as you have suggested trying to adjust my regular eating habits and fit the new keto element, it for sure makes it sustainable. I do not plan to go back to eating grains (although I loved it, but I am no longer craving it which is a huge success!) I am surprise how little hungry I am although again I was never a big eater… I can easily fast for 20 hrs but the fact that I introduced fat back to my diet makes me feel a lot more satisfied. I am have cut nuts but I am holding on to my cheese;) that is my happy place but if the scale does not more I might have to let it go too… I was thinking of getting a ketones blood tester… I think it might re assure me at least that I am doing things right… Tks again I need encouragement.

I have a daughter that is doing this way of eating for epilepsy and I finally broke down and bought a breath keto tester that seemed to have good reviews. As far as ketone testing for the average weight loss person, just don’t get crazy with needing to always be in ketosis or chasing numbers. Also as far as the dairy goes you could try going without it for a week and just see how you feel especially when you start eating it again. My diet has become so simple and I love it-bacon, eggs, meat and every so often I throw in some veggies. With every dietary change I have made I feel better and better. Good luck

It’s really common to lose a good chunk of weight when starting keto, and then nothing for several weeks. Happened to me and to lots of other people too. Nothing is wrong, just your metabolism adjusting to burning fat. Keto on, and you will see results in time!

What @Aqualeot said! Atkins called this PISS (post induction stall syndrome). You should notice other signs. Perhaps less hunger between meals or lack of morning hunger… The beginning is dumping inflammation throughout your body. Now your body is learning to burn fat. Then it will get better at burning body fat and weight loss should resume.

Thank you very much for the re assurance. Will try to stay positive and keep Keto -ing!

Thank you Katarina for the warm encouragement! Will keep going at it and will give update in a few more weeks.

Hi! If you are building muscle, that weighs more than fat does. Therefore the scale does not tell the whole story. I have not lost anything in about 3 weeks, actually my weight went UP 3 lbs, yet now I have to buy a smaller belt. Watch how clothes fit…

Thanks John for your good words. I am very hopefull I’ll also build muscle at some point I need to as I have stopped going to the gym and running for the last 6 months… My personal coach explain me this phenomena which is why I am measuring myself also but so far other than the initial weight which I did loose 1 inch from my waist nothing as moved either. My coach is saying I need to heal internally first, I just wished I was 100% certain I was doing things right.

I have never understood that. How does a pound of muscle weigh heavier than a pound of fat, if each weighs a pound?

(Doug) #12

It’s not a pound of each. A given volume of muscle is heavier than the same volume of fat. Muscle is denser.

I experienced a stall too at 4 weeks… I eliminated most dairy and nuts. Minor changes but I saw results. Good luck

Tks Melissa for your input. Hum letting go of my cheeseeeeeeeeeeeeee that is what has made shifting my eating to keto so easy;) but yup got to focus on the price and it is worth it. I have remove nuts for the past few days will keep it up and will start reducing the cheese too I guess I am ready for that now:)! Tks I am motivated now knowing someone else stalled for this long!

Do you keep an eating log?

(MelissaH) #16

Oh I completely understand! I ate a lot of cheese too! At first I was trying to get fancy while getting used to this way of eating. Now I just keep it simple- eggs, veggies, protein and veggies with everything! I also love my egg salad and tuna salad with homemade mayo. I’m feeling much better!

I’ve been Keto since July 4th. I’ve only lost 7 lbs and have found nothing to break this stall. It’s very frustrating. I never encountered the keto flu, but my breath has been an issue throughout. I’m wondering if this diet is for everyone. I still have 20+ to go. You should be happy with your initial 14 lb loss. That’s amazing. That should be incentive to keep going.

I downloaded the Carb Manager appt. I might not reach the net cabs every day but close to 80gr/109g the appt is recommending and going sometimes a little over in Net carbs like 22/18g. All from hidden sugars or sometimes fruits (I try to keep with bays).

That is also what my coach suggested. Keep it simple. I love to cook so bought 3 books, my favorite is Simply keto her recipes are amazing! Might be too early for that. I kept it simple last night (eggs, brie, brocoli) and I have a feeling this is what I needed to do. Will keep at it.

Can’t wait to have all the heath benefit, I had the flue ALL WINTER last year!!! I forget so many things which is very unlikely for me, my hands are shaking a lot, got every checked I am in perfect health based on my doctors! I have a feeling it is the sugar from bread, nachos, crackers that i have been indulging in the last year to counterpart a very high level stress at work…

What does a full day of eating look like for you? Maybe with a few more details we can help you😊
