Looking for Information or HELP with Keto Rash!

My husband and I have been doing Keto since February. But about 2 months ago he started getting a rash and now I’m getting it too. We’ve done some internet research and we’re just about positive it’s Keto rash. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts, advice, etc.?

Ketoaide can definitely help with the rash.

I haven’t got a keto rash my daughter and I are on it and haven’t developed it but we eat 25 g to 50 g of carbs a day so we’re not in ketosis all the time that we’re still losing weight. I did get a urine strip to find out when I am in ketosis and most the time I’m slightly in ketosis so maybe add a little more carbs.

The directions on the Magnesium Citrate say to discard inside amount 24 hours after opening the bottle. How do you use it? Is it still good after 24 hours? Do you make up a bunch of bottles ahead of time to use all the product. Can you give me some more information.
Thanks!

I actually use a magnesium powder so I would not know about that, sorry!

Is there a particular band of powder you use?

I had the keto rash. It went away when I eliminated dairy. I have since started eating small amounts of dairy, and still no keto rash. I think I was eating way too much cheese. A few days ago, I listed to a podcast with Megan Ramos from IDM. She said when her patients get this rash, she will have them eat a cup of berries (raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries - not blueberries) and consume two tablespoons of ACV daily. This gets rid of the rash, which she believes has something to do with yeast.

Carmina, did your husband’s rash ever go away, or does he still have it too? I had it and it sucked but it did eventually go away.

As @breathless575 mentioned, IDM recommends both topical ACV applied to the site and also taking ACV orally for this. (I didn’t remember the berries part but I’m sure I’ve just forgotten.) Other people on the forum mentioned things like topical tea tree oil, or washing the area with the tea tree soap from Trader Joe’s, have worked for them. Still others had luck with antibiotic or antifungal creams (like Monistat). Maybe try a search on the forums if you haven’t yet, there are a few threads that list treatments people think may have helped them.

I tried all this stuff, and it eventually went away after a month but I’m not sure any of what I did really helped. The tea tree oil/soap did make it feel better than anything else, at least temporarily reduced the itch for sure. I listed those solutions though, because it sounded like it helped for some people. However if you don’t see improvement, my understanding is it does go away on its own eventually, it’s just very annoying until it does.

I believe she tells them to have a cup of berries (strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries, not blueberries) in two portions, so a half cup in the morning and a half cup in the evening. She says this small increase in carbohydrates is very effective and that once the rash is gone you can slowly start to reduce the amount of berries you’re eating. If the rash comes back, you just increase back up a bit until it goes away. Rinse and repeat until you can tolerate ketosis without the berries.

Good luck. I hope you have relief soon.

He still has his. I just recently started with mine and I think it’s because I’ve started exercising more, plus I work in the school kitchen and it can get very hot in there sometimes. We just started trying some topical Tea Tree Oil products, the KetoAid water and have some Bile Salts arriving from Amazon today. Hopefully this will help. If not I’m going to have to try some other remedies I’ve been reading about and people from this forum have been emailing me.

That’s a bummer that he still has his rash. After two months I’m sure he’s ready to have it over with. Let us know how it goes with the stuff you’re trying. If it’s not clearing up, it might be worth just making sure it’s not something else. The other reason I asked if your husband still has it is because some causes of rash (like ringworm) are contagious, but not necessarily immediately transferred. They can be opportunistic, taking advantage of a period of lower immunity for whatever reason. I have no reason to think you’re wrong about it being keto rash though.

  1. Keto-Adaptation and Nutritional Yeast
  1. Nutritional Yeast: The Antiviral, Antibacterial Immune-Booster
  1. Choline is the Vitamin for a Fatty Liver & Can Prevent Keto Rash Dr. Berg talks about keto rash and a fatty liver. You can also get a rash (keto rash) from autophagy, a conditon whereby the body is recycling old damaged proteins and cleaning up microbes in the body - a type of detox. But when the liver is fatty it loses the capasity to detox, clean the body and things can back up. Choline, one of the B-vitamins can help prevent a fatty liver. Choline is high in egg yolk, beef liver, and cruciferous vegetables. Your intestinal flora (friendly bacteria) have a lot to do with absorbing choline so if there is an inbalance you may not even absorb choline. Choline works closely with purified bile salts to break down fats.

I have the rash & it is miserable! I stared taking bile salts, a liver detoxification supplement, choline supplement, & most important a high quality turmeric supplement. I’ve also been putting Benadryl gel on the areas. It is fading a little more every day.
