Hello,
I’m new to the Keto diet. I’ve seen numerous versions of Keto approved coffees online, and on social media. What is the correct way? I’ve purchased the following ingredients so far per my research: coffee, MCT Oil, grass fed butter, heavy Cream, almond milk, sugar free syrups, and cinnamon. Thanks for your help!
Keto Coffee- What is the right way?
I prefer it black if I’m going to fast until lunch or dinner.
Otherwise my favorite is coconut cream from Trader Joe’s in a can.
I think the most popular is MCT+Coconut Oil.
I like hazelnut coffee with coconut oil, butter, and heavy whipping cream and blended because it makes it frothy.
Does having a ‘fat’ coffee break your fast? I usually have almond milk, a dash of heavy cream and just started trying a little coco oil.
Ya I can eliminate hunger for several more hours after having 1 or 2 coffees. My goal wasn’t to start IF right away but it kind started naturally since I wasn’t hungry until noon after coffee.
Do you think my jump to IF (or sort of IF with coffee) could be causing my week 3 fatigue and brain fog?
Any calories consumed will break your fast. You can have black coffee, but only with sugar free sweeteners. No cream or butter.
No “correct” way except no sugar or honey
I like mine with butter, HWC and liquid stevia.
I only put butter in my morning coffee. The rest of the day HWC and stevia
You can make it however you want, there is no right or wrong but the traditional bulletproof/keto coffee is a dark coffee, 1-2TBSP grass fed butter and 1TBSP MCT Oil.
Have your coffee lowcarb. There is no “right way”.
I had to stop using Bailey’s coffee creamers. Too much sugar. But I now use heavy whipping cream and some SweetLeaf stevia drops to sweeten. (I like a few drops of the chocolate flavored one and a little more generous helping of the vanilla creme flavor. But that’s just what works for me.)
I don’t use HWC anymore. I’ve switched to Aldi’s half and half. Same carbs, and I’ll burn more of my own fat.
As all the responses show, there is no right way, only your way. … I personally don’t add anything now, and used to use 1 Equal packet and powdered creamer to each coffee I drank, which was everyday, all day, all year around. I also added 1 Equal to Iced Tea, but I also drank it straight. So again, I don’t use any sweeteners in either. … But I also wanted to get away from any sweeteners, as well as not desiring them. Which I know using any sweeteners can help keep your sweet-tooth around too, and in time you will get used to whatever regimen you decide to go with.
I’m not 100% certain, please someone correct me here, but isn’t it an insulin spike that breaks the fast? Not the calories? From what I understand, fat has a very negligible impact on insulin. But sweetener could cause an insulin spike breaking a fast with zero calories.
Depends on your personal preference. There’s likely as many different ways as there are people drinking it. Play about and see what works for you.
Its my understanding that erythritol doesn’t spike insulin. So maybe that is the sweetener to go with.
It’s not. That’s the downside of them being able to round on labels. Most half n halfs are NOT actually that. They’re typically 60-70 milk. So there is more milk sugars in there. If it’s not causing any issues it doesn’t really matter, but simply dropping fat doesn’t necessarily translate to more body fat burn either just FYI. If it did low fat keto would be a thing.
Thank you all for the responses thus far. I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and I’ve been one of those people to take coffee w/ my creamer. And now, switching to Keto friendly coffee has been a struggle. I don’t think I can do the original keto coffee as mentioned here just yet.
Today I drank a regular 10oz coffee, w/1 tbsp of MCT oil, 1 tbsp of butter, 1 tsp of HVC, 1 tsp of SF hazelnut syrup and a dash of cinnamon. Needless to say, I didn’t find it enticing. I shall try a different mix tomorrow.
LOVE IT! With that said, just do coffee with a couple TBSP of the HWC until it’s how you like it and that should be about the same and then worry about backing it down later. Do it slowly. Sweeten it to the level you like, but try not to use too much granulated stuff as they’re usually bonded to maltodextrin which you want to minimize. For me, a Stevia/Splenda blend tastes like sugar. Stevia is more sweet than sugar, and Splenda is a little less. Go for liquid when you can. Play with it. When you’re starting out you get hit with a lot of information and it can be overwhelming. The world isn’t going to end if you make your coffee taste the way you want it to, just do it the keto-est way you can and don’t over think it. You’ll be suprised over time doing this how your taste will start to change. Some people have to deal with the fact that they never actually liked the taste of coffee to begin with. Could go either way.
