If you struggle to keep carbs low

(Kathy L) #42

I just ordered some (50) for 1.98 each - from: http://www.ebay.com/usr/greatpharmacydeals?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2754

Some folks count net and others total carbs. I think I am fairly insulin resistant and do better on the total carb count.

I just bought the Precision Xtra with a box of 10 keto strips for $26. plus tax hear in Canada at a local pharmacy. So less than $3 each. I have a question for you all. Can you or does anyone use the finger prick needles more than once? Really glad i found this forum. Thanks to all for contributing.

I have reused lancets once or twice it in a pinch after I thoroughly cleaned them with alcohol. Do not recommend it as a daily practice. Here in Tennessee, I can get them really cheap at Walmart, so it’s not a real concern.

Again, I recommend - if you can afford it - to buy the ketone strips in volume (at least 60 per order) to get the cost way down below $2 US each strip.

I believe Dr Bernstein (of diabetes type1 fame) says that you can safely reuse lancets numerous times. He has been a diabetes doctor for 50+ years and says he has never known of any infections or problems when reusing lancets.

I reuse mine until I think they’re dull. Never had any issues

Thanks for all the tips on cheap Precision Xtra Blood Ketone strips! I just tried kairos’ selller (" ANNEECAKES " who seemed to have the best price) and I got a batch of 20 for $1.80 each . http://stores.ebay.com/ANNEECAKES-Ketone-Strips . They arrived (free shipping) in 2 days and work great. Thanks again!

Where is the best deal for the meter? Thank you

(Tracy) #50

This is my big struggle at the moment: balancing 20g of total carbs with the notion that if I’m not eating lots of veg I’m not getting all of the nutrients I need each day.

#51

If all your carbs come from veg you are unlikely to go wrong.

Sorry I was late to see this, Holly-- too much summer travel!

I think if you have a bonafide dx of diabetes, you can get a meter free from Abbott’s web site. I didn’t/don’t have that, so I just went to http://www.amazon.com – I think it was about $30.

For the cheapest blood ketone test strips that work in Precision Xtra meters, I still use http://stores.ebay.com/ANNEECAKES-Ketone-Strips – I’ve been getting them for $1.70 each this month :). I always get my strips in about 48 hours and I wait till the last minute, so they’re m’ favorite.

I’m trying to find a good deal on exogenous ketones – I have sticker shock on those :/!

(Holly prentice ) #53

No problem! I think I found something cheap at Walmart but I want ketone blood meter only. It’s cheap as the strips are too. I hope it’s not bs and ketones.

That is exactly where I am at now @Chthulhu. How long has it taken you to improve your IR or would you say you are losing because of the zero carb and IF? Do you think it’s healed your IR yet?

Great link! Thank you!!! I am a lover of Brussels Sprouts, and I didn’t see them in that grouping, but I am going with the notion that they are similar to cabbage carbs.
Thank you again for posting that link.

Lately, I have been following Dr. Berg’s advice and eating more greens. Although its kind of hard to consume 10 cups a day. I’ve been doing keto for over 4 years and gut health has become more of a priority. I use the lifestyle to help with fibromyalgia symptoms and the higher veggies seem to be making things better for me. You can read more about my transformation here: My keto transformation it’s been a lifesaving decision for us.

IIRC, sprouts are just over 50% fiber, cabbage is closer to 25%.

Fried sprouts FTW!!

Wow your website is so cool!

Hi everyone! I’ve been 2 weeks on the keto plan and I’m seeing results and really loving it, but I struggle with staying under the carb amount for my plan. What are some tips towards dinner time if you need to get that fat g back up to around 80% for the day. I’ve been snacking on a bit of cheese before dinner, and that helps some, but I’m needing some variety besides cheese and avocado. Any thoughts?!

Are you hungry or just chasing that %? Fat isn’t a goal, it’s a means to get full. Carbs are a limit, under 20g net, and protein is a goal.

If you aren’t hungry, no need to chase that number. However, I’d suggest adding fat to meals instead of snacking. Olive oil to salads, cook with coconut oil, BPC with butter, HWC, and MCT oil (start slow with the MCT) in the morning to get a good jump start on the day. After cooking your meat add butter or HWC to make a pan sauce from the fond. Cream cheese is deliciously high fat. I personally eat a good dollop of cream cheese and straight butter to get in some fat. I’m not technically chasing a number, just trying to provide the amount of fuel my body needs.
