Hi u all I am new

(Keto life n' a little hippie ) #1

Just thought I should say hi. Just signed up

I am in the very start of Keto living right now. Just received some of my keto shoppings so I have started with keto coffee and have been off carbs for a week now. Easier then what I would’ve thought. Cravings? Sure. But not intense ones or those uncontrollable cravings where binge eating follows, as with any other diet I’ve done.

My stats of today. Weight 166 kilos. I am about 6 feet too short for my weight and got a 49% body fat. Never done keto before, flirted with low carb with good result years ago, but eased into old habits as I looked at it as a diet and not a life plan. Keto is here to stay. It will be part of my life.

I might not be all strict all the time, when I shrunk 6 pant sizes and can walk a few miles while talking, but now in the very beginning I will be dedicated to stay in keto.

Look forward to get to know you all, and I hope i can pick up some keto tips and tricks from you. I will share whatever positive I get long the way.

Thats all for now folks.

This made me laugh out loud! Welcome to the forums and welcome to the beginning of your new life. Keep reading here, the more you know about the damage carbs do to your physical/mental well being the less likely you are to let them creep back onto your plate.

(Keto life n' a little hippie ) #9

Glad to be at your service. We all need at little more laughter in our life. This is the time and now is the change. I am off them carbs. They have brought me nothing but cravings, the more I carbs I ate the more I craved.

To think I had forgotten how good water really taste. For years I’ve been downing pepsi and coke, several times a day. And water was mostly in my coffee. After a week off the sugar and carbs I no longer crave sweet drinks and I find the taste of a glass of water both refreshing and delicious.

Welcome @idunno! We are glad you are here. Before I started keto and lost almost 40 pounds I would say I am not fat I am fluffy! I was fluffy for years, just thought well I may as well accept this is how it will be. Then I started keto and I will never go back!

I’ve been struggling with sleep for a couple of years now. Hard time falling asleep, and when I do fall asleep I wake up shortly. Been using sleep apnea machine since before my sleep was ruined.

Today I woke up after around four hours of sleep and felt great. I’ve been sleeping since the back of my head touched the pillow last night, and I had all kinds of dreams. Thinking back I’ve been dreaming at least the past 4 or 5 nights. And to me that is the weirdest thing, I hardly never dream. Most likely because I wake up so many times during the night and it takes too long to fall back into sleep again, keeping me out of deep sleep cycles? I have for years been very tired in the morning, waking up feeling like I really need more sleep.

The past 4-5 nights I haven’t been tired in the morning, getting out of bed have been a breeze. And all those night I noticed I had long periods of dreaming. Right now I am thinking maybe deeper sleep is due to lack of carbs, and the dreaming is proof of hitting deep sleep cycle?

I don’t know, I just felt like sharing this with someone so here it goes. Sleep has been an issues for a couple of years now, with various of medicines recommended, tried, tested and rejected. None made me sleep deeper and wake up fresh, but some of them helped me fall asleep. Most of them crippled my mind and held my brain hostage until after noon. So concentrating made me really tired. At least without any pills I was just plain tired, but my mind was working like normal.

I think I will start logging my sleep from now on. To actually get some data about sleep cycles and deep sleep.

I have a sleep apnea machine that I use nightly and love it so much… it really helps me fall asleep actually. If things are really stressful around here and I am afraid I won’t sleep well, I take 2 melatonin tablets, they taste like peppermint and disolve on your tongue and work well for me.

I hope that you can get proper sleep, keep us informed on your progress.

I re read what I wrote last post, and I kind of buried the point about sleep apnea machine. When I first started using it, about five years ago I had much better sleep pattern. And the machine did nothing negative. I don’t blame the lack of sleep on the machine.

Later on when the sleep issues started I was still using the machine as I am to this day. The sleep issues are not related to the machine just to be more clear. It is more of a matter of not hitting the deep sleep cycles I guess. Or maybe the apnea got worse as the weight kept piling on? I haven’t done any logging of sleep or measuring of sleep quality since before I started with the machine.

Could it be I might actually need to get a new sleep logging and possible get the machine adjusted or even replaced with a newer one? I’ve seen the machines of today, and they are way more advanced then mine. I’ll think I book a session at the sleep lab. At least they can have a look see, check if any adjustments is needed or even parts replaced or maybe the entire machine should be changed? Or maybe my face shape has changed so the mask does not sit tight enough? Who knows? For sure a job for the sleep lab.

Haven’t even thought of possible worsening of the sleep apnea until reading your post. See what a good night sleep can do for you, lift the brain fog and actually make you think

Tried melatonin as well as various other pills. Didn’t keep me sleeping a complete night either.

Have you read about others that got better sleep as a result from cutting carbs? I am not making a statement saying my nights of more coherent sleep is because of no-carbs, it might not have anything to do with me cutting carbs. But still worth sharing, I think I need to start monitoring and recording the sleep. Maybe the keto also work for improving sleep, or at least get more coherent sleep?

Welcome! I can attest to sleeping well with fasting. I haven’t been a good sleeper for years and I can appreciate your commitment to get good sleep. If not fasting at least going to bed without a full belly might help. A bad habit for myself. Food works with the mind and can cause crazy dreams. Keep working it! What other health issues do you have? How is your blood work? We are here for you and your health.

(Carl Keller) #15

From my observations here in the forum, some of us are gifted with intense dreams and some aren’t. I’ve tried to research the exact mechanisms but with no success. Certainly a deeper sleep state with less inflammation in our bodies creates a better dream setting. In my case, the dreams did calm down in intensity and frequency after a few months.

Ditto for me. Once I kicked my sugar addiction, it’s as if my taste buds woke up. In general, I discovered the flavor of real food to be more intense than ever before and I’ve learned that some foods that I used to dislike aren’t so bad after all. I used to avoid cauliflower, mushrooms and brussels sprouts but now they are no longer on my reject list.

(Keto life n' a little hippie ) #16

@CarlKeller Mm cauliflower, make a creamy soup from cauliflower. My favorite soup. I used to feel guilty when making it because it tasted so good when I added heavy cream to it on top of the fatty home made stock. I felt I was cheating by eating such a “fat soup”.

I don’t mind the dreaming, I take it as a positive thing. The brain is working out shit during sleep. Fine by me, better then doing the same work at my time.

@Paul28023 yeah regarding full belly at night. Prior to keto I always got so intense cravings at late evening or early night so ate junkfood, ice cream or jelly beans, chocolate bars and crispy chips, and chased it with pepsi or coke, often right up to bed time. Now I eat dinner when I get home from work. And at work I have a fat coffee. No cravings in the evening and no extra meal. And I am not hungry when I go to bed. It was not a conscious decision to eat one meal. Its just that the fatty coffee just keep the hunger and cravings away.

Thank you all for participating and giving me such a warm welcome. Very much obliged. I started this journey over at another forum, but that one was not friendly at all. I am so glad that I signed up here and joined your community. This seems like the place to be for the keto life.

Looking forward to hours of binge reading, collecting tips and tricks and partake in threads and getting to know you all.

Gonna step out and find myself a bench to park my hiny while have my lunch fatty coffee and enjoying the summer.

Our fear of fat is misguided. Current dietary guideline recommendations quietly dropped restrictions on fat in 2015, for the first time since 1980. The science, time and time again, showed no health benefits in restricting fat. On the contrary, low fat diets were often found to be harmful to our health.

(Keto life n' a little hippie ) #19

These are beautiful times we live in. Hi fat no remorse or bad feeling. And there was my coffee ready.

Gone lunching.

I agree with this so much - exactly what I’ve been doing and it’s been invaluable. Welcome!
