Difference between ketosis and fat adapted

Can someone explain this. I’m confused on it. If I were to get thrown out of ketosis would I have to start over on fat adaptation as well?

Keto - I start tomorrow - here's my checklist (anything missing?)

Generally no, but it depends on how long you stay out. If you have a cheat meal, or just go too heavy on carbs that it knocks you out of ketosis, then you can usually get right back in and it won’t really affect fat adaption.

If that cheat meal turns into a cheat day, then a weekend, then “whoops, took the whole summer off”, then yeah, you’ll probably not be fat adapted anymore.

As far as points in between a meal and the whole summer, it depends on the person and how long they’ve been keto/fat adapted.

Basically ketosis is your body producing ketones and adaptation is it knowing what to actually do with them. If you’re strict and stay on track then adaptation will normally happen more quickly and once you’re adapted it’s easier to get back into ketosis if you slip up.

Amy Berger’s latest explanation, “Ketogenesis, Measuring Ketones, and Burning Fat vs Being in Ketosis” http://www.tuitnutrition.com/2017/09/measuring-ketones.html Her previous 3 part series also good. A more in-depth, even a difference between fat-adapted and keto-adapted, explanation at Virta. https://blog.virtahealth.com/ketone-ketosis-basics/

Ketosis is a level of ketones in the blood stream in particular BHB whereas ketogenisis is the process of making ketones in the liver/kidneys using fats.
This is a endocrine system process, the ketones are a byproduct of breaking down fat into energy used in the metabolic process of the body. Ketosis is controlled by the hormones insluin and glucagon, which are inverse to one another, when one is high the other is low.
When someone is keto adapted they are producing more ketones and energy then they can use, and now have a surplus. This sparks a number of celluar and hormonal changes like fat adaption and brown fat conversion. From the point were you cut your carbs until fat adaption happens you are relying on your liver for all of your energy needs, once fat adaption happens your cells can use the energy without relying on the liver as much.

Fat adaption is a cellular level function controlled by insulin levels much like ketosis that describes the cells ablity to bring fat into its mitochondria and turn that fat directly into energy. The only major player that cannot become fat adapted is your brain whichneeds glucose and ketones for energy. Ketones allow fat adaption to start, it takes time for most people to adapt fully several months. Your body is still using glucose but a much less level so that is also being produced mostly by your liver based upon glucagon levels and stored glucose levels in your liver.
They are similar in the end result but slightly different in function and byproducts.

Fat adaption does not move forward if you are not keto adapted and if you are not producing ketones. At the onset being “kicked” of ketosis will have short term effects and long term effects. The short term are obvious, feeling like crap, no energy, etc. The long term effects are that you delay fat adaption and some other body processes that use ketones as signals and conversion. Do you have to start over, well that is a subject up for debate, but my best guess is you kick your self out of ketosis before keto adatption yes you are starting over again, maybe not from square one but it does not help. But the span of time we are talking is a matter of days not weeks.
