Diarrhea

#1

been on keto for about 9 weeks with no cheating and not on any meds. and been eating the same foods .all of a sudden i started having diarrhea. is it a natural part of my body adapting? and will it go away?

3 weeks ketogenic with watery stools daily
Seriously, when do the "runs" stop?

Great question! My body is acting up a bit as well which is WAY unusual for me. More gurgly guts with the feeling of an avalanche going through my intestines…that’s about it.

Pay attention to types of fats and how much and see what your body does. I know when I’m too high on mono fats I release the kraken. Other times when too much saturated I gurgle and have learn to nibble on cheese or drink coffee.

ok i wad guessing it was the new really fatty bacon end pcs i switched to.
but how long does it take to get back to normal when reducing some fat

With too much fat it can test your gall bladder pretty hard.

It takes a day or two at most personally

Different people have different gut reactions to fat and sugar alcohols. I don’t get diarrhea at all unless I have food poisoning. But I know people who get wobbly belly at the slightest amount of maltitol.

The fact you haven’t changed anything in your food indicates that maybe keto is not related and you might just have a stomach bug.

Be completely sure that you have been eating the exact same thing. You mentioned a “new” bacon. Take it out and see what happens.

Whats really cool about paying more attention to the food we put in our mouth and prepare ourselves is the ability to monitor changes. I make a skillet pizza. Its just one scrambled egg, mixed with a cup of mozzarella, fried flat and hard. Take that, put it in the toaster oven topped with cheese and pepperoni.

Anyway, I eat that pizza A LOT. One day I was farting up a storm. I had diarrhea. I’m thinking… “whhaaa?” Well, that day I decided to add some psyllium husk to my “dough.” Took it out of the recipe, gone.

To reinforce my point about knowing what goes into our food, I had this feeling of anxiety over the weekend when my wife and I went to a local indian casino to mack on some eat-all-you-can lobster tails. I had the feeling of anxiety because I didnt make the food so I don’t know exactly was put in/on it.

Anyway, good luck.

My wife just started Keto 2 weeks ago and is having issues with diarrhea. She think maybe she needs fiber. I tell her it is probably her body getting used to Keto, but I’m not sure. I never had any issue with Keto flu or anything else and have been doing it for about 6 months now.

Any advise for her?

to much fat or magnesium can cause diarrhea. but yah i had the same problem. 2 weeks and it was gone though.

#10

i dialed down the fat and my electrolytes suplement and i was good

Can you provide typical daily foods she eats for meals and snacks? And any supplements or medications. This will help us provide you with suggestions of potential or most likely source of problems.

She is taking a magnesium supplement, but she has been taking that for months without issue. Yesterday she had 3 eggs and 4 pieces of bacon for breakfast. A bacon cheese burger with no bun and home made coleslaw (no sugar) for dinner.

Other days she has had more fat than that. It could be we increased her fat intake too fast.

Well, the body is a dynamic thing - especially when it goes from being a glucose-burner to a fat-burner with ketogenic way of eating.

When I transitioned into keto, I needed to be cognizant of salts/electrolytes and needed to proactively make sure I got enough to ward off the dizzy feeling and tiredness that comes with electrolyte imbalance.

Today, after years into ketosis, I take zero supplements. Nothing. Nada. In fact, if I do take supplements…I reckon I would cause a disturbance.

So, maybe a wholesale review of her eating regimen should be looked at - not only the added fats components. Other components of what she eats may very well be causing issues.

Thanks. She has reminded me that in the past she has had some pesky gall bladder issues. (She still has it, it just acts up every once in a while.) It could be that we increased fat too fast for her. I’ve been Keto since November and have probably been increasing my fat intake more gradually. We’ll moderate the fat a little and see how it goes.

Thanks for all of the replies. I’ll post again when we figure out the results to help future Ketonians.

i am having major diarrhea at the moment. This is the second day and already quite fatigued. I made a coconut oil and coconut flour bread ( lots of eggs) and perhaps that did it, too much fat. Or it could have been the colonoscopy a few days ago, leaving my stomach fauna without resistance. I took some immodium yesterday, and that slowed it down a bit, but awoke with stomach cramps at 3am today. I would really like a keto home remedy for this, since the usual things ( fruit juice) aren’t in the program.

Megan Ramos of the Fasting Talk podcast recommends chia seeds. You mix them with water and they form some kind of gel. I haven’t tried them yet, but I have purchased them and have them ready waiting. Also if you are using Ketoaide maybe cut back a bit. I think I may have over done it in the past and too much magnesium can also be an issue.

(edward rosenthal) #17

any science about it?

(John Somsky aka KetoGrinder) #18

Magnesium citrate is used to treat constipation, so I assume there have been studies somewhere. Not sure about the chia seeds. But Megan works with Dr. Fung and they recommend this for their patients so there must be lots of anecdotal evidence.

My wife and I have been eating lchf for six months and have had many benefits but learning to predict what might cause disaster pants is still a trick. Last night she baked a keto lasagna (fantastic), but I over-indulged -good lesson on eating to satiety- and this morning… well methinks too much of a good thing might be the reason I’m writing in this forum instead of strength training ;~)

I’ve been having the same issue while working with my nutritionist. She says it may have to do with dehydration.
Without carbs your body your body lose the water that bonds to the sugar molecules.
Per her recommendation, i’ve added salt or seasioning salt to my meals, which previously I had not been doing.
I’m only doing a 1/4 or 1/2 tspn to 4 meals each day.
It’d day 3 of the “salt” experiment and my stomach is feeling better. And my BM are getting more normal.
If you try this, please reply abd let others know if it helps.
