Since I started Keto a couple of weeks ago I have had non-stop diarrhea. Every three or four days I have to take an Imodium pill. I only salt my water, with a 1/2 teaspoon, when I’m feeling dry mouth which is only occasionally. It does seem like the diarrhea is worse when I salt, but maybe it’s just when the Imodium is wearing off. Not sure which. I drink lots of water. I haven’t had any Keto “flu” whatsoever. So, what’s up with the diarrhea. Any answers out there? Not even sure it has ANYTHING to do with the salt. That’s just my guess. Anybody know (or even think they know??) I should add that I IF 20:4
Diarrhea. Ugh. Help
Try just putting a punch of salt into your tongue when you feel the need as half a teaspoon is actually quite a lot.
Yes, there are other threads referencing diarrhea after ingesting salt water. I agree with Allie, I always take salt separately, never in water.
Hi, newbie here too, I had same reaction up to 5 weeks, the the opposite. Now having trouble with constipation. I think cause I never used to eat that much fat before, and my system had to get used to it, now I’m trying to drink more water. Hopefully will help. Or people have mentioned magnesium citrate, I will try next.
I was diagnosed with IBS-D over a year ago. What has helped me is taking three of these psyllium husk capsules twice per day.
I read an article somewhere online that said diarrhea while on keto could be caused by artifical sweetners. I had diarrhea the first 2 1/2 weeks of keto. It could of been the combo of and diet soda and coffee, however I drink coffee black but maybe I was also dehydrated? Also, I iust figured it was my body ridding itself of toxins. I am better and I hope you fewl better soon.
Yes, the artificial sweeteners can give you diarrhea. I have to be careful not to take any miralax if I’ve had anything with artificial sweeteners. (stevia is ok, for me)
I had that problem too and still do a little bit. I had my gallbladder out about 30 years ago, so I started taking bile salts with every meal and that has helped a lot.
I stopped drinking soda too because that was not helping.
You said in the original post that you’ve been on keto for a couple of weeks but are already doing 20:4 intermittent fasting. It may be a case of too much too soon with the fasting and your body might not be fully fat adapted yet to handle it. Also if you’re eating heavy foods after the fasting that might cause the diarrhea as well.
