Coffee during IF

(Tina ) #1

Im doing 16:8 IF. Can I have coffee with HWC during the fasting hours?

(Dustin Cade) #2

there are those who feel that you should not have anything but water during this time, I have up to the last few days had coffee with butter, coconut oil, sometimes HWC during my fasting times… I think it comes down to how you feel, how does it work for you?

#3

How much HWC are we talking about? The bulletproof-style coffee is based on butter and MCT oil, i.e. fat-only additives … the protein content in HWC might not give you the same results. Will it shut off autophagy? Will it interrupt other potential benefits of fasting? Maybe, but we don’t know to what degree.
What are your goals for the daily shortened eating window? If it’s about overall management of food intake, and the HWC helps with your satiety and diet adherence, then you’re on the right track.

According to Dr. Rhonda Patrick anything you ingest that is not water can interrupt the autophagy process… though i do not know if there is a research that can support or refute these claims…

(Tina ) #5

Thank you for your responses. (I had to look up “autophagy” lol I feel dumb- ha)
My only goals of the IF is to increase weight loss, so I assume I should have nothing but water then?
My coffee is more of a habit than a need- so I can wait until my eating times to refuel.

Autophagy is the bodies process of getting rid of dead or damaged cells… in theory would aid with loose skin and such, so important w/weight loss…
i would say if you are just starting fasting that keeping coffee in should not be an issue…

(Tina ) #7

Ahhh! Well you explained much better than Wikipedia, thank you! I already lost 30 pounds and my skin is starting to sag, so I definitely don’t want to interrupt the autophagy process. I’m going to try to put off the coffee for a few hours going forward. Thanks again
Tina

i just gave up coffee a few days ago…

(KB Keto) #9

What HWC are you using that has protein?

(betsy.rome) #10

It’s common keto knowlege that autophagy happens during fasting. Can anyone refresh my memory & post where that research is documented? or, maybe it will be in the next 2KetoDudes podcast? @carl

(KB Keto) #11

I heard about it via Dr. Rhonda Patrick via the Tim Ferriss podcast

(Dustin Cade) #12

I found about her on the Joe Rogan podcast, it was like 2.5 hours long

(KB Keto) #13

yea, she doesnt seem to be on any short podcasts! haha the TF podcast was like 3 hours as well.

#14

Here’s a great piece written by Dr. Jason Fung that spells out the virtues of autophagy in clear terms. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/fasting-and-autophagy-fasting-25/

(Tina ) #15

I only add like 2 tbs of HWC- will that shut off autophagy?

#16

Everything I have read speaks to coffee itself actually being beneficial for autophagy, but I believe that is more focused on black coffee (without any additives, calories, fats, etc.).

(KB Keto) #18

fair enough. I suppose that .3g may have some impact but I’d argue no more than the fats when compared vs water only IF.

#19

Ya, if a person is rigorous with only the 1 Tbsp, then it’s probably cool. But just wanted to have it out there that there are carbs and fat in HWC which some keto people are surprised by.
And until we get more IF/keto/autophagy human studies we won’t really know what the magic numbers are for how much is too much.

perfect. I found this on that link, which answers my question…

“Drinking coffee while fasting actually promotes and increases autophagy. Interestingly, both caffeinated coffee and decaf have the same result. However, putting sugar or other sweeteners in the coffee will interfere with autophagy.”

no coffee unless black (yuck)
