Can I Keto without a gallbladder?

(Nickie) #9

I don’t have a gallbladder and experience IBS issues any time of day as long as I am eating fat as my first meal. I had the same issues when I wasn’t on keto if I ate fat so it really makes no difference to me. Unfortunately I have just learned to live with it.

I found some good YouTube video advice on this very topic. I forget which Dr. it was, but he had a lot of recommendations.

I’ve been doing it for 9 months! I feel great!

No gallbladder since 2011. I had severe constipation and reflux no matter what I ate or drank. A month into keto (since April '18) dropped the anti-acids. Took enzymes for a bit just because of reading things here and wondering if I was getting all the nutrition possible from my food, but quit taking them within a month because I didn’t see that much difference.

Everything got better, and then really improved after a series of extended fasts. The only time I have gastric issues now is when I eat raw veggies/salad.

Give it a go ~ and good luck!

Thank you all for your comments and encouragement! Starting today, here we go!

I’m also in the no gallbladder club.

I’ve been doing various LC/keto approaches for years, and more recently incorporating both short and longer fasts.

I’ve never taken bile or other digestive supplements. I do have the occasional loose stool, which could be related to the go, but for the most part I don’t see any issues.

Of late, I’m giving carnivore a try, and so far, it doesn’t seem to be changing anything one way or the other, apart from getting to eat even more delicious food.

I’m in week 4 of keto (lost 12 kg so far ), no gallbladder since 2005, I had stomach problems during the first week of keto, acid reflux (never had it before) and just after eating I had diarrhea; reduced my fat intake (no bulletproof coffee, moderate amount of fat when cooking) and the problems stopped, I have been slowly increasing my fat intake since that day, distributing my macros in three meals instead of having one “fat loaded” meal and I have been feeling fine so far.

These resources helped when I was starting:

I had mine removed last November, so not even 12 months. I don’t seem to have had any issues which other people didn’t. Tho I was very very sick during the first week!

22 years without a gallbladder. Lifetime of chronic IBS. 4 months keto. 3 months with no IBS symptoms.:+1:t4:

very amazed by the replies of this thread

If I may ask are you on carnivore diet or just plain keto?

Do you eat vigitables and fermentable fibers?
thanks

Regular keto. Lots of above ground veggies, animal proteins/fats, butter, avo oil, coconut oil, eggs, cheese, cream. Occasional handful of berries. Macros live something like 70% fat 20 or more %Protein, 8%CHO. My carb intake is generally somewhere between 20-40b total. Usually <20g net, but not always. Random blood ketones show therapeutic range. I go off plan from time to time for special occasions and am able to easily get back into nutritional ketosis in a day or so. I have no personal history of diabetes.

thanks for the reply

My gallbladder was removed in 1996. It depends on the person. Some people do fine, others may need some bile acid factors or ox bile supplement to help. I took some from Jarrow for a while called “Bile Acid Factors” you can find on Amazon or search Ox Bile. But then I realized I was able to do just fine on my own. Your body adapts. Here is a video from Dr. Ken Berry in Tennessee who is a keto doc, explaining : https://youtu.be/36SU_31rNxE

Bottom line, just figure out how to make it work for you!

Thanks, Adriana. Very helpful.

This is encouraging.

Thanks again for all your replies. I’m on day three and so far, so good! I feel like I’ve reached ketosis, and haven’t had any episodes. I’m wondering if I was blaming fats for my “issues” when carbs were the real culprit. I’d go out to breakfast and have eggs, bacon & pancakes, and would always blame the bacon & butter. Maybe it was the pancakes!

Could totally see this turning out to be the case! I’m almost 6 months keto now and will occasionally eat something more carbish, and the reflex and bloat are almost immediate. Fresh veggies (like a salad) do the same thing. I do mostly protein these days, with plenty of butter and some HWC in my coffee, moderate cheese and randomly will have cooked vegetables.

I learned the hard way that I can not eat green Leefs the way I did pre keto.

I done lots of reading trying to make it make sense.

It looks like the microbiom changes with diet.

I am as close as one can be to carnivore with almost zero carbs.

So defiantly I do not have the same bugs that can digest the fibers.
