Can I Keto without a gallbladder?

(J) #21

Regular keto. Lots of above ground veggies, animal proteins/fats, butter, avo oil, coconut oil, eggs, cheese, cream. Occasional handful of berries. Macros live something like 70% fat 20 or more %Protein, 8%CHO. My carb intake is generally somewhere between 20-40b total. Usually <20g net, but not always. Random blood ketones show therapeutic range. I go off plan from time to time for special occasions and am able to easily get back into nutritional ketosis in a day or so. I have no personal history of diabetes.

thanks for the reply

My gallbladder was removed in 1996. It depends on the person. Some people do fine, others may need some bile acid factors or ox bile supplement to help. I took some from Jarrow for a while called “Bile Acid Factors” you can find on Amazon or search Ox Bile. But then I realized I was able to do just fine on my own. Your body adapts. Here is a video from Dr. Ken Berry in Tennessee who is a keto doc, explaining : https://youtu.be/36SU_31rNxE

Bottom line, just figure out how to make it work for you!

Thanks, Adriana. Very helpful.

This is encouraging.

Thanks again for all your replies. I’m on day three and so far, so good! I feel like I’ve reached ketosis, and haven’t had any episodes. I’m wondering if I was blaming fats for my “issues” when carbs were the real culprit. I’d go out to breakfast and have eggs, bacon & pancakes, and would always blame the bacon & butter. Maybe it was the pancakes!

Could totally see this turning out to be the case! I’m almost 6 months keto now and will occasionally eat something more carbish, and the reflex and bloat are almost immediate. Fresh veggies (like a salad) do the same thing. I do mostly protein these days, with plenty of butter and some HWC in my coffee, moderate cheese and randomly will have cooked vegetables.

I learned the hard way that I can not eat green Leefs the way I did pre keto.

I done lots of reading trying to make it make sense.

It looks like the microbiom changes with diet.

I am as close as one can be to carnivore with almost zero carbs.

So defiantly I do not have the same bugs that can digest the fibers.

Hadn’t thought of it that way! I’m sure my gut biome isn’t as it was pre-keto, but also thinking I didn’t digest those raw foods well then either. Good to know I’m not the only one!

Glad to hear you’re doing well! My own personal experience follows (everyone is different).

I’ve been without a gallbladder for somewhere between 20-30 years (can’t remember exactly). Not long after having it removed, I discovered that eating anything fatty/greasy gave me HORRIBLE reflux, so on my dr.'s recommendation, have been taking generic Zantac (ranitidine) for years, which alleviated the problem.

I’ve been on keto since 5/19/18 with no gastric issues whatsoever. I never took any of the ox bile supplements or anything. As a matter of fact, I stopped taking the Zantac a couple of months ago, just to see what would happen, and no reflux. Yay!

Continued good luck on your keto journey!

I am extremely heartened by this thread, as I parted company with my gallbladder last Thursday. Turns out that issues I was blaming on my stomach were not my issues at all, or at least not all of them. Apparently Mr. Gallbladder was the reason that antacids, and treating for H-pylori over the last three years did so little to help.

My gallbladder had to jump up and down screaming and sending up flares before I could get a proper diagnosis in the ER.

I’m thinking I’m gonna be feeling better than I have in a rather long time.

And I’m gonna keep on keto, gallbladder or not. I have no intention of returning to being a diabetic morbidly obese person. Great thread here.

Prayers ascending for a swift recovery! KCKO. :+1:

I have had no gallbladder since 92. At the time, no one recommended any additional supplements and I thought I had IBS all these years. Doing Atkins did not make it worse.

When I increased the fat this past fall, it was horrible. The fat was just running through me. So I did some research and started taking bile salts. It did take a week or so to start working fully, but I am fine now and have zero IBS symptoms. I wish I knew decades ago that bile salts would have fixed me up.

I’m only on week 3 and I also do not have a gallbladder. The first week I had constipation and then diarrhea but after that first week I had a no other problems. It’s been wonderful just going to the bathroom one time without pain. I also feel like it had been the carbs that was giving me the problems and not the fat.
