Best time of Day for blood ketones?

(Stephanie Lofton) #27

Probably too much protein. I’d keep the high fat but drop carbs to 20 and protein maxed at 75

(Phil Gilbert) #28

For the past few weeks i’ve done a ketone blood test before eating in the morning. Ketone levels have averaged .6 to .9 each day. Is that an adequate level? Having not eaten for 10 to 12 hours, I wasn’t sure if that was appropriate. Would they go higher after I’ve eaten through the day? I’m new to this so I’m really trying to learn.

It’s worth researching the net carbs concept. My understanding is net carbs is total carbs minus fibre. Pretty sure I heard on one of the podcasts that we should count total carbs.

Wonder if you track total carbs for a few days to ensure you’re not inadvertently consuming more than you aim to?

(Cindy Schulle Warner) #30

Well, “Keeping Keto with Drew Manning” says to count total carbs and start with no more than 30 total. Or you can go down some from there. Personally I try to keep my total carbs below 25 and/or my net carbs around 15 or so. I try for about 85 grams of fat, about 55 grams of protein. I’ve lost 36 pounds in almost 7 months and lots of inches. Keep right on! Go Keto! Go you!!!

(Jaqueline Pittore) #31

Hi Cindy… I’m having trouble coming up with anything above 70 g of fat… can you give me an example on how you reached that high?
Thanks…
J.

Hey there, Jacqueline. For instance, let’s take a look below at my MyFitnessPal diary from a couple of days ago.

Also, please note that a good way to meet a fat goal is to incorporate cheese, butter, good oils, MCT oil, avocado, eggs, etc. almost excessively. Nuts (I often hear about pecans, almonds and walnuts) are especially good for what we need as they are a good source of fat and many other nutrients… all the while watching other macros and calories. Yeah, you might google for fat bombs, search for fat bomb recipes on google or at Pinterest… They are high fat and fairly reasonable on calories depending upon the size of the fat bomb.

I hope some of this/these info/iseas are helpful.

Cindy

If you need help setting macros or goals by grams, you might check out www.ruledme.com. Look for their calculator. I use it and occasionally recalculate my suggested numbers based upon my ever changing weight.

The screenshots below are probably in revserse or, or close to it. I hope that will not be too confusing.

Also, a good way to meet fat goals is to use cheese, butter, good oils, avocado also excessively. Of course while watching other macros and calories.

I wanted to post this from an article I read.
…”Once your body is in a “keto-adapted” state, it will be very efficient and using the acetoacetate that it produces from your fat and you will have a lower level of ketones that are reading on the strip. This is misleading. You are actually deeper in ketosis but the strip says you are less so. …”

(Dara Altadonna) #37

is this true?

(Ron) #38

Yes it is.

(Chris Robertson) #39

I’ve only been on keto for about 4.5 weeks but I have been testing very regularly. My ketones are always low when I first get out of bed. They dip even lower at around 11am and start climbing back up around 1pm. They then dramatically spike at 3pm then slowly tapper off for the rest of the day. My wife has a specific pattern too and her’s is very different than mine but still consistent. This has lead me to believe that once you establish your own personal pattern then it doesn’t matter when you take the measurement. Up until recently I was establishing an average rating of all my daily measurements but now that I have a month of measurements under my belt I’m only measuring at 11 and 3 and averaging those. Later I’ll start measuring only once a day and I don’t think it matters if I do it at 11 or 3 as long as I understand that if I’m doing it at 11 the reading will be low and if I’m doing it at 3 the number will be high.

(Lisa D) #40

Wow, thats great! Congrats!!! Do you count calories too? I only want to lose 10 lbs but having trouble eating 1200-1300 calories per day when most of the calories are from fat!? I’m a 51 yr old who wants her clothes to fit well again. I’ve been on keto for about 2 weeks have FINALLY gotten past the feeling crappy KetoFlu and feel amazing. I drink a ton of water and my scale now actually says I weigh more. I know I’m not to worry about the number on the scale, but I do need my jeans to fit with no “muffin top” anymore. So in short and back to the question. Do you count calories? Great work on losing 36 lbs, that’s amazing!

(Chris Robertson) #41

From all I have read, it is my understanding that you shouldn’t worry about the number on the scale until you have been doing keto for a month or two. In the beginning you need more fat so that it’s always there and ready to burn when your body runs out of carbs. Once your body gets used burning the fat you can reduce the amount of fat you eat. The 80% fat rule was designed for children with epilepsy. Children need to grow so they need more fat. Adults don’t necessarily need 80% fat. They just need their grams of fat to be equal to or grater than their carbs and protein combined.

(Lisa D) #42

Hi Chris - Thank you for this. I will heed your advice and hide the scale in the garage until July 15! Great tip! Regarding the fat: Intuitively that is how I feel and as I read more blogs, there do seem to be some Keto pros that say you don’t need ALL the additional fats I’m trying to cram - ie cook everything in bacon fat, add the gloops of keto mayo, full T of ghee and MCT oil in my coffee, top with cheese, etc … I like that formula - fats > protein+carbs - never heard that. I strive to consume 100+ g fat, 80 g protein 20 g total fat I take more protein b/c I strength train 3 days a week and do cardio 3 days a week - down on Sunday. At any rate, the more I get used to this WOE, the easier it becomes. I love these blogs too! Thanks again!!

(Christine) #43

I was at a plateau and then a Dr. Suggested that I focus on reaching my protein goals for the day and only use fat as a filler. The theory behind this Dr’s. recommendation, was that if you are trying to burn your body fat and you take in more fat from foods, than you have to burn that off before it starts using your body fat- His advice worked for me. i do add MCT oil to my teas and coffees during the day, but after lowering my fat more weight started coming off. That is what worked for me. Also I do not worry about my keto levels as long as I am in ketosis.

(Paul Davies ) #44

Hi all. I used the keto stix & found them not to be a good indication of my keto levels & wanted a better indicator so I brought the Freestyle Optimum Neo. I test 1st thing in the morning after getting up & before consuming any foods or liquids. The 6 months that I have been doing a low carb, med protein & high fat diet I’ve been .4 -.5 mmol range. I’m currently doing a long fast which is now in day 4 & this morning my level is 5.4 mmol. I’m in full nutritional ketosis & have ridden the wave of challenges from the 1st 2 days. I’ve lost 2kg’s also in the fast period & 16kg from the start of my 6 month journey. My Gki is .74 also. Feel good, look good & may go further on the fast…who knows!

Hi I am new at all this, I have just bought a blood glucose monitor my reading in a morning is 5.8 how do I know when Ime in ketosis Thankyou in advance x

I know this question was raised a a while ago but I believe this scientific study answers the question:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5097355/

Basically at 3AM is the best time, but anytime after 10PM is good. The lowest numbers are to be had at 10am.

But, like measuring weight, the numbers can be all over the place. I reckon the best unit of measure for me is belt notch position. I’ve gone -2 notches in a month. I feel 15 years younger. Yep I’m in nutritional ketosis.
