Beginners Mistake

(Kimberley) #1

I thought I would have a Diet Coke from McDonald’s this morning as a treat. I hadn’t eaten yet so only had this pop. It knocked me nearly out of keto. Wake up bs was 4.6, ketones 1.9. After some time walking through stores for a few hours should have improved my numbers. Got home and my bs was 5.4 and ketones only 0.9 (GKI was 2.42 and increased to 6.0). I can live without pop, not a big deal for me but I never thought a diet pop would screw my numbers up so much. Grrr.

0.9 is still a good number that many people would be very happy with. Don’t beat yourself up, no real harm done.

Thank you so much for sharing. I’m new to this, and a type 1 diabetic. Diet sodas are a go to for me, but I will be aware now

Thanks for putting that into perspective for me, Allie.

Every mistake I have made has led me into being better at keto, keep up the mistakes!

Yes! This^^^

I keep feeling like they’ve changed the McDonald’s diet Coke here in Columbus, OH. It’s so sweet to me now, I swear it must be real Coke or Coke zero.

(Allie) #8

That’s very common with keto as your taste buds change and things that never used to be sweet suddenly are.

#9

Well it’s really helping me with quit artificial sweeteners. I’m also trying to cut dairy to get past my 5 month stall. It’s working! I’m down 5 pounds in 2 weeks!

Sometimes the littlest things like that can get you moving again. Congrats

I only splurge on Diet Coke occasionally, but I am convinced that one time, McDonald’s gave me a regular Coke instead. The spillage around the lid left a sticky residue on my fingers! Aaarrrgh!

I am a recent Pepsi addict (carbs in general too), and I definitely taste the difference between diet pop and the sugar laden stuff. Aspartame has a nasty taste to me and I didn’t even enjoy the pop but drank half. I notice occasional use of swerve does not take me out of Ketosis, and only affects blood sugar a tiny bit. I really believe the aspartame in the Diet Coke caused me to jump almost right out of keto. I just never thought it would have that much effect. I am only 17 or 18 days in on keto so as I try questionable ingredients I like to check my bs before and after, and occasionally ketones before and after. It’s how I’m learning what works and doesn’t work for me. I bought a pop from the health food store called Zevia and I’m saving it for a treat. Has anyone on here tried Zevia? Did it have any effects on your bs or keto status?

How does one lose their taste for sweets? I’m constantly wanting them. I don’t have any in the house right now and I feel deprived. 3 months in, 30+ pounds lighter, I should be over them by now.

(Terence Dean) #14

I hear ya on that one, just discovered that I don’t respond well to heavy cream. That one is eliminated.

#15

I’ve tried Zevia. As a diet Pepsi lover (after adjusting, at first thought it was gross, now I couldn’t drink regular Pepsi- even before keto - too sweet) I don’t like it. If I just think of it on it’s own terms as a drink, and not as a replacement, it’s okay. I don’t check blood sugars, but I’m sure it’s better than diet Pepsi.

Me, too! I was reading about the insulin responses for different protein/fat combinations and dairy is quite a ways up there. I think it’s pretty individual, though. I’ve known for over a decade that I have an unusually intense attachment to dairy. This week, I’ve been staying away from dairy and nuts. I noticed that as soon as I started eating them regularly, about 2 weeks ago, my weight loss completely stalled.

I think it depends on what part of “sweet” people are attached to. From my observations, it seems like most people are just attached to the blood sugar reactions rather than the “flavor” on their taste buds. It’s like an association gets built up between the sweetness + the blood sugar/insulin responses, which are VERY addictive.

But many people are intrinsically drawn to sweet flavors. I think I am to a certain degree. I still like diet soda and sweet spices like cinnamon. I crave diet soda way, way less than I did before keto. I haven’t bought a 12 pack in a long time. But I’m not sure I’ll ever lose total interest.

fwiw, I have little-to-no interest in chocolate because I feel like the cocoa competes with the sweetness, lol.

Yeah I was sailing along quite well then I introduced this thickened cream and suddenly my weight-loss was interrupted, more than usual, luckily I was able to identify the culprit pretty quickly, and its business as usual.

So yeah we all need to work out what works and what doesn’t on an individual basis.

“I think it depends on what part of “sweet” people are attached to. From my observations, it seems like most people are just attached to the blood sugar reactions rather than the “flavor” on their taste buds. ”

Could be. All I know is I’m craving chocolate ice cream or choc milk. I broke down and made keto brownies last night.

Did you find it difficult to remove dairy from your diet?
