Beginners Mistake

I’m reading a book called Keto: The Complete Guide to Success on the Keto Diet. He goes into quite a bit of detail about cravings and how to manage them, either by a suspected nutritional deficiency (he suggests which ones to take), and how to reduce ghrelin, a hormone that causes hunger (on that one he suggests getting your sleep as ghrelin forms with lack of sleep, and ensuring to hit the protein targets). I got the book from Amazon Kindle.

That could be a big factor since I don’t sleep well at all. Even with a CPAP. I think I woke up gasping for air at one point last night. Hopefully, when I hit my goal weight I won’t need it.

I don’t get fountain soda at all anymore. I can taste the difference between Diet Coke and Coke, but I am wary of getting a sugar coke on occasion. And since I’ve made the conversion from cola to citrus sodas, I am less confident in my ability. When you get a can, you know what you’re getting. When you get a fountain drink, you’re relying on a fast food or movie theater employee paying full attention while replacing the syrup and setting the mix. No. My trust doesn’t go that far.

Kinda, only bc I was mindlessly eating chunks of cheese. I popped a sample into my mouth at trader Joe’s and didn’t realize it until I ate the second one. (Yes, I take 2 cheese samples.) I had actually thought it would be tougher to lick my hwc habit, I had it in 2 large coffees, then sometimes I’d have a root float with ice and diet root beer for “sweet treat” in the evening. I thought ugh I’m going to have to quit coffee, but the first cup was really amazing. It’s funny how we are able to keep resolving our different food issues and experimenting with what works for each one of us. Two nights ago I opened a beautiful bourbon cheese and only had 2 tiny pieces, almost and ounce, then I put it away!!
Before I would’ve finished the whole block with my husband.
Keto is so liberating!!

Oh dear. Yes, I have a dairy problem. Hwc and cheese. Did you experience withdrawal when eliminating dairy or is it more like just cravings? Did you start drinking black coffee or with butter and mct oil?

I worked in a movie theater as a teenager, and I can verify that our ratios were way off from what you get when you buy a can. More syrup, less water. We could adjust it, and the sweeter stuff sold better. As a 17-year-old, I didn’t think about the ethical implications. :frowning:

I took a magnesium supplement before bed last night and I’m sure I slept better. I am at the early stage of keto, not even in a month yet, but sleep was drastically altered. My iwatch didn’t calculate my sleep last night for some reason but it sure felt like my quality of sleep was improved.

I’m not sure for most but for me it was a matter of time and diligence. Also, stated away from anything that mimicked sweet… I’m not good at moderation so I gotta cut stuff that I have risk of setbacks with

I am relatively new to keto. What do you use to check your blood sugar levels? Thanks

(Kimberley) #30

I am new to keto too, and am just starting week 4. A blood glucose meter gives your blood sugar reading. You can buy them from your pharmacy. Generally the machine is free when you buy the tester strips, at least in Canada. Blood ketone meter, same thing.

Thanks! I will check it out. Is blood ketone better or more accurate than urine ketone monitoring?

I suggest going to Walmart and getting the Relion Prime monitor. The strips are the cheapest you’ll find anywhere. The monitor was 9 bucks and the strips are about 10 bucks for 50, and less than 20 bucks for 100, if I recall correctly. Pick up a lancing device too and a box of lances, as this monitor doesn’t supply one. This is by far the most economical way to keep on top of your BG in the long run.
