August Fat Burnin'

Thank you. Are you still on your modified ADF schedule ? I hope it’s going well for you.

Saturday should be a day for sleeping in but per my usual I was awake at 5am. And my bg is as usual elevated. The only thing that seems to budge it down is longer fasts but that is not on the agenda this weekend. Going to be heading down to Louisville, KY for a pediatric pharmacology conference. I am either going to do two 90 minute eating windows or maybe just one. Figured I would play it by ear. These conferences usually don’ t have good food choices so that will probably make my decision while actually at the conference. Have a great day today and remember the greatest gift of this woe is it makes you mentally strong but flexible.

Question: What does your egg fast look like? Eggs and butter, water, coffee/tea? Or, do you include anything more?

(Jeremy Storie) #124

Eggs, bacon nectar or butter, mayonnaise, cheese (few and far between), and black coffee or water. I limit my cheese but some people don’t. I also drink my coffee black all the time so cream is okay but don’t over do it. Just remember for every egg you have to have a tablespoon of fat. My favorite is scrambled but I do a lot of egg salad with mayo and have made egg and butter muffins (eggs mixed with butter and salt and then baked in a muffin pan) before.

(Jeremy Storie) #125

I also just eat when I’m hungry. I’ll average 8 to 12 eggs a day.

#126

Sounds perfect. I’m going to fast through until tomorrow around noon (started a fast 1830 on 8/3). Feel so great, I decided to go past the 46 and into the next day, and it seems like a day of egg fast would be great way to breakfast!
Thanks for the details, it all helps.

Hi irishred. Hope it’s a great conference. I think you and I are fighting a similar battle. The first morning after breaking my fast, I still had a fasting-type blood glucose reading, about the same as the day before. But a couple more meals in (8 hour eating time, 2 90-minute eating windows at either end of that 8 hours) and my sugar was climbing right back up to where it was before. Today I woke up to 300 fasting bg, and it put me in tears. I’m sick of the indecision, wondering if I need some medication or just stick with fasting, whether to stick with the conventional doctor who will gladly put me on Victoza if I ask (Dr. Adam Nally apparently likes Victoza), or wait until I talk to my friend who’s a doctor. I was reading about the incretin system today, maybe that has something to do with it, in which case Victoza might help. But Dr. Fung would say that these medicines don’t really fix the problem, and it all comes back to fasting. He makes a good case. Well, I at least know that I have had healing of my liver and kidneys (based on bloodwork) through keto and fasting, so that alone makes fasting worth it. And having some lower sugar readings for a few days here and there will help my A1C go down some, which will keep the doctors placated. Also Dr. Fung has his severely diabetic patients do longer fasts, 7-14 days, according to the Ultimate Guide to Fasting. Ugh, so hard, but if that’s what it takes, maybe I have to.

Anyway, my husband and I had (another) long discussion about what the heck could be wrong with me (we strongly suspect the glucagon is over-signaling the liver to kick out glucose especially in response to eating), and we think I should do another fast starting today after lunch through Tuesday evening (a dinner to attend Wednesday night, company coming Thursday, so I want to be past the refeeding side effects before all that). So, back to fasting in a couple hours. I might even just start now, I really don’t feel like eating knowing it will just spike my sugar up again.

That sounds good. I’ve managed to keep off the weight I lost on my water fast by going straight into my egg fast. Good luck :+1:

#129

Darcy, sorry to hear how you are struggling. It’s a big bonus to be able to rationally discuss this with your husband, that has to be a help.
The longer fasts don’t sound like fun, but I think, if you can give it a go, maybe that will really start to initiate some healthier responses from your pancreas/liver, etc. From what I understand, our bodies have a much better capability of healing when they are not busy digesting food.
Also, those fasts are “like a muscle” as Megan Ramos mentioned in her Ketofest talk. Once you practice a few 3 day fasts, perhaps a 7 day fast won’t be quite as difficult as it seems right now.
I’m hoping the best for you Darcy, and congrats on the healing of liver and kidneys! Nice work

Thank you so much Helewisa. The longest I have gone on a fast is 5 days, and I know that the 3-day mark is the hump to get over in order to have an easier time continuing on. I agree, I need to give it a shot. If nothing prevents me, I will shoot to try it after my company leaves, at least for 7 days. I’m getting motivated to get my house organized ahead of the school year starting, so that will help distract me from the thought of eating. The psychological part is the hardest (and gets really hard to deal with on stressful days) but I am going to remind myself how miserable it is to see a fasting glucose over 300 and how great it is to see those numbers under 200 while fasting.

Broke my egg fast yesterday with burgers and dogs at a birthday party cookout . I did a 74 hour water fast followed by roughly 72ish hour egg fast. I lost 6 pounds on the water fast and kept it off with the egg fast. I think it was a good combination considering that every previous water fast that I have done has had a significant amount of bounce back weight. Overall I am happy with the outcome :+1:

#132

Just broke my fast this morning, so it was just about 56 hrs, think I may have dropped 1-2 lbs, and now I’m eating some buttery eggs fried in bacon nectar ;-D and well salted of course. Tonight there’s a church supper, so I’ve made what I hope will be a spectacular keto meatloaf…so I know there’s at least ONE thing there that I can eat!
Maybe someone will bring some pickles or a salad?
I didn’t expect to lose a lot and I want to take care not overdo my fasts, since I yo-yo dieted for all of my life, I believe that “switching things up” with a several days of good, fatty keto quashes the reaction of a metabolic slow-down.
Please let me know if I’m understanding this correctly? Because, I’m becoming addicted to fasting, and want to be sure I can keep at it!

#133

Well, I was sick all night Friday with some kind of food poisoning or stomach bug that’s going around, ugh!!!

I was able to eat dinner last night, so today (Sunday) I am starting my egg-and-bacon fast. I want to do at least 24 hours just to see if I like it, and go from there.

Great job, @jeremystorie! I like your water-egg fast combo idea.

#134

Helewisa how did your potluck go? I hate 4th hose type of events because you never know if you can find good food choices or not. I usually e,d up taking at least two dishes to cover my eating needs. Are you doing any fasting this week?

#135

Gatita,
How did your egg and bacon experience do? Did it work for you? Was sorry to see you were sick this weekend.

#136

Jeremy,
The more I think about it the more I like your combining the water and egg fast. I know you did it for stabilizing the weight loss, but I think it could help extend the fasting period for someone still working on how to extend their fasts but are having trouble doing so with water only. I always seem to hit a wall around 72 hours. Three days of egg fasting might still offer some advantages compared to just returning to eating. What is your regular eating pattern after a longer fast?

(Doug) #137

I wonder how many couples discuss glucagon signaling to the liver…

#138

Aw thanks! I’m on day two of my quasi-modified-highly-personalized-bacon-and-egg-plan and feeling great. I’m eating very little bacon, about once a day.

I did eat a couple leaves of romaine lettuce (to scoop up egg salad). I’m allowing myself a small amount of lettuce with dinner. I also had wine, yes wine! Going to skip it tonight, though.

Eggs and fat are so freaking filling, I found it hard to get in my minimum of six eggs, but did make it! Oopsie bread helps, as it has the perfect egg/fat ratio per 2 pieces.

I’ve lost 2 pounds so far – I’m happy. I don’t feel hungry at all and I have that same afternoon energy I get when fasting.

#139

Darcy,
Bg is indeed frustrating as it very slowly stair steps down. I find I have to be very strick with my carbs to keep a downward movement going and any carb creep moves that average by up again. If you decide to do a 5 day fast let me know and maybe we could prop each other up. I have made the 5 days only by having a meal mid-way but I would like to make it past that hump. We just got home from the conference and I need to think about my plan of attack for this week. Hang in there! We can take charge of our health and it will pay off.

#140

Rather sweet isn’t it? How are you this fine day? Are you fasting at all this week or are you rolling around in the sweet grass fed butter? If it is butter, watch out for the neighborhood airedales as they might try to follow you around while trying to lick you. I speak from experience of having a butter thieving 4 legged critter in my own household. Might attract cats too!
