August Fat Burnin'

#201

Gatita,
Sounds like you are in a sweet spot right now. Hope today is another great day.

#202

It’s Friday the 11th day of August. One third of the month is already gone. School starts back next week for my son and I will be back full time the following week. I hate to see summer ending. But I do find fasting easier when I can establish normal patterns from week to week. I am doing a 24 hour fast today unless I decide to also forego dinner. It is our family night to eat out so I’ll see how I feel then. Then I’ll start up again on Sunday with 3 fasts for next week. What are all of you planning for the coming week?

#203

You definitely are in a ā€œsweet spotā€ now. I just hoped on the evil scale this morning and see there has been no weight loss as I enter day 3 of my fast and had thought to end it this evening.

Now, I’m questioning whether I need to give it a rest and eat for a while after this fast, perhaps my body is freaking a bit after all of my past yo-yo diets and massive calorie deficits (aka sins of the past!)
I was really hoping for something, but I know I’m in ketosis and have tons of energy, just wanting to get rid of the last 10+ pounds. Everyone says those are the hardest, and I guess there’s really something to that. I wonder what the physiology? of that is?
Maybe I’ll go ahead with the egg fast… Have a great day!

#204

I’m very curious how this works as well — I’m not on the last ten, but from past dieting, I know those seem to take forever… It does seem that mixing things up helps, so maybe try eating more and/or doing the egg fast.

Keto has taught me whole new respect for being patient, especially since for me it is not a diet but the way I plan to eat the rest of my life.

My latest ā€œwhooshā€ came after seven months of barely losing, even with IF three days a week. The body has its own mind, I think!

#205

I’m on Metformin 500 twice a day. I am in the highest range on my Ketostix and feel constantly like I’m floating on air. Life is good! Hoping to come off it soon. Also taking Vit D, Vit B12, Magnesium, and fish oil

#206

That’s awesome. What kind of magnesium do you take? Have you thought about B1 (thiamine) supplementation?

#207

I’m debating what to do about my next fast. Right now I am leaning toward starting after dinner tonight and trying to go for 7 days, which would be new for me. I might do it like last week, where I had my Saturday morning coffee and then started the fast. Then I could go through next Sunday morning when I have to play organ until 11 AM, and break the fast when I get home. (which would be 8 days) That would give me enough time to deal with any refeeding side effects before I have to be anywhere besides home.

My thought process is, it would be nice to have one more serving of my parmesan noodle soup before I give it up for 7-8 days. Also, what is in the fridge that is going to go bad if I’m not eating it because no one else will eat it (like fresh greens). Is there too much there that the guinea pigs won’t finish it off before it spoils? Am I ready to not have coffee and cream for a week?

Given all that, I don’t see anything really holding me back besides knowing I will be fighting the boredom of not eating. I would like to get through the fast with less diet soda this time, I really leaned on that too much with the last fast and it might have messed up the healthfulness of it. But I am not ready to say I will have NO diet soda. I might need it to break up the boredom a little.

I have a lot more cleaning and organizing to do before my kids start school (September 5) so this will give me a good chance to get more done (love that aspect of fasting). Also I have a consultation on August 22 with a new doctor, and I think getting some more fasting in before that meeting is a good idea. I will know how I respond to a 7-day+ fast so we can discuss that, plus if she has another regime for me to try, I might not have the chance to do the 7-day or so for a while.

Does that answer your question irishred? :grinning:

Edit: I might get the ball rolling this evening, as I cannot think of a single thing I would want for supper.

#208

Seven months…you ARE patient indeed! I keep feeling like I should keep this fast going now that I’m nearing hour 72.
But, my toes feel a bit cool and so I wonder if my metabolism is shifting down. I recall Dr Fung mentioning that this was a sign of just that and if this happens you should eat. Anyone recall this or have you seen more science to back it up? May start a new thread w/ this question for a quick answer!

#209

I have noticed that during a fast too, in general feeling a little chillier than usual. I wondered if it was metabolism. I figure if I feel okay otherwise I’ll keep going, since I mainly want to see my bg go down. I did feel warmer after a day and a half this last time. Try some hot tea, put on some socks and see if you feel better maybe?

#210

Good plan, the tea is already by my side! Warm socks sound good, and I really want to keep going with this fast.
I forgot to take a FBG in the morning, but this afternoon about 1300 I checked and it was 57, and I felt great, blood ketones were at 6.1 so I know where the energy/clarity is coming from

#211

That is great! I am happy today too cuz in three mornings post breaking the fast I have stayed below 250 instead of the usual climb to the 300s, and today I had a post prandial of 197, a new low. Maybe this will work for me after all.

(Ethan) #212

That would make sense. Your body burns energy (Calories) to keep itself warm. One way to reduce the amount of energy burned is to not keep as warm, which would render extremities colder than usual. Other functions that are not necessary could slow down as well.

#213

That’s excellent news!

#214

Yeah, I remember that the cold is because is the body is shutting down some less-essential functions, just in case.

(Sonia A.) #215

I’m always cold during a fast, it’s normal for me. I don’t think it’s the metabolism slowing down since it starts at the beginning of my fast. I only think my metabolism is slowing if I feel fatigued and crappy.

For the coldness, I’ve read that when you fast, blood leave the extremities (hands and feet) and go to the visceral fat to help break it down and burn it. I don’t recall where I’ve read this, but I’ll try to find.

(Sonia A.) #216

I think it’s linked to evolution. If we could lose fat easily by fasting or reducing our food intake, we wouldn’t have survived as a species. Our body tries to keep as much fat stored as possible in case of a famine or a zombie apocalypse :grinning:. We have to trick it into letting go the last bit of fat we find unsightly. That’s why the last kilos are the hardest to lose.

#217

Hahaha, zombie apocalypse, please NOooooo! Those nasty movies are too scary (so embarrassed to say I’ve seen more than…3?!)

This theory or (fact?) of blood going from extremities to visceral fat burning has been mentioned a bit earlier, and of course to see the science would be best (I can always make some time to search as well!) If this is true, I am more than happy to feel the chill!

And as for the last ā€œunsightly poundsā€, I’m not so worried about that, it’s the fat I cannot see (without that dexa scan) that I want to be rid of asap.

#218

One more quick post this morning. I’m still fasting, not cold, have normal energy levels and preparing for a day home health nursing…long day forecasted!

Last night, the guests who came buy, and my husband, were all munching on popcorn and Peppridge farm cookies…ugh. I had a few moments of carb envy there for sure, those stinking cookies!

Meanwhile, the day will keep me so busy, not sure if I’ll end the fast today or? How is everyone else faring with the August Fat Burning?

#219

Helewisa,
Don’t get discouraged. Remember your body is still working and it will let go of that last fat when it is balanced. Each day you rest it is still helping it to be healthier and stronger. You are a beautiful work in progress!

#220

Gatita,
So very true about a mind of its own. But what a cool ā€œcreatureā€ we are. It is amazing what our bodies are capable of given the right supports.
