Yes, Nathanael, I was addressing you. How long do you want to go for? Do you want to make this “weekend only” eating a regular thing?

(Nathanael Schulte) #42

For a while, yes

(Izabela Vlahu) #43

If you are thirsty while fasting, no matter how much water you are drinking, take some salt. I personally like a glass of water with some apple cider vinegar and salt. Also, (homemade) sauerkraut juice is great.

Have you read Jason Fung’s book on intermittent fasting? He basically says, either do a long fast, couple weeks for example, and then eat LCHF, or do the shorter term protocols on a regular basis with 24 or 48 hour fasts. Regardless of what you choose to do, I’m curious to hear how it goes for you

(Nathanael Schulte) #45

Yep, I’ve gone through his book several times, and I listen to their podcast. The 6:1 idea came from one of their episodes where they interviewed a patient who they had on a 6:1 protocol

(Izabela Vlahu) #46

I didn’t realize they had a podcast… I personally find fasting easier each time, so maybe that one day of feeding won’t reset everything… looking forward to your updates

Yup, at www.fastingtalk.com
Once I get rolling I’ll be updating weekly at least

I’ve tried a variety of fasts over the last month or so and have had some really good results after not having a lot of luck with weight loss. I initially lowered my carbs for a month or so and lost a pound or two here and there. Once I learned more about fasting, I tried a few 24 hour fasts to get into the swing of things. Those were pretty easy so I decided to try an extended fast.

I did a 4 1/2 day fast (Monday night to Saturday morning) and lost 9 pounds, gaining back about 2 pounds after breaking the fast. I then did another 2 1/2 day fast the next week along with some intermittent fasting.

Right now I am working on alternate day fasting which is going well. 30 days ago I weighed 219 pounds and today I am at 204 pounds which is a lot of weight to lose for one month

My routine for ADF is to eat dinner, then do a 36 to 42 hour fast, breaking the fast and eating within a 6 hour window or so, then repeating the 36 to 42 hour fast. I like this because my weight doesn’t seem to jump around as much as it does when I do extended fasts. Alternate day fasting is easy to follow even though the hardest day is supposed to be day 2, and I am doing days 1 and 2 over and over with ADF  I am adjusting nicely and do not seem lethargic or low energy on the 2nd day before breaking my fast.

Good luck to all and keep up the good work!

I’m about 72 hours in and going till Friday sometime. Full of energy and feel good. 2 more pounds and I’ll be down 50 since the beginning of February. Yeah me!

Hey Tina, and everyone else!

My primary reasons are to:

  • promote autophagy
  • elevate levels of HGH
  • improve insulin sensitivity

Very similar to Nathanel’s reasons.

I can’t point to any obvious “this happened because of an extended fast” things.

  • generally I’ve lost around 10lb during a 7-10 day fast, but I expect most of that is water, and weight fluctuates anyways, so whatevs to that

  • one anecdote, however … I’ve had a tough wart on my foot that, after running through a course of treatments, my chiropodist and I agreed we would just manage (rather than another course of treatment to try and get rid of it). I had subsequently done 2 extended fasts (one 7 day, one 10 day) over a 6 month period. When I next went to see him, he was pleasantly surprised that the wart was gone! Autophagy at work? I’ve no proof, but I’d like to think so

I maintain my regular schedule while fasting - in fact, I try and schedule my fasting to work with my workout schedule, to take advantage of the elevated HGH.

Workout-wise, a typical week consists of:

  • 3 strength training sessions

  • 1 low-intensity long run (at MAF pace)

  • a HIIT-style workout roughly once every 2 weeks

  • I need to work in 1 or 2 more shorter low-intensity runs per week (as I’m training for a marathon, and behind schedule :grimacing:)

I agree with your thoughts - there’s absolutely no need to rush into extended fasts, as everyone is at their own point on their journey to improvement.

As you have experience with 16:8, a 24 hour fast sounds like a great next step. See how you feel, see how it works for you, and build upon your successes!

Check-in for all’y’all, I’m at ~105 hours in … and plan to break it around 110 hours in (after strength training today).

I will hit 72 hrs. tonight at 6:30 PM, I was going to stop then, but have now decided to go through the night as well and get another 12 for 84+ hrs in total. Love the hormone rushes the 72 hr+ fasting causes, don’t want to miss out on all that goodness.

It is our anniversary tomorrow, so will need to break the fast earlier in the day. I feel so good right now I could fast tomorrow as well, but DH wants to celebrate. Good thing I know lots of good steakhouses nearby that serve their veggies with butter sauces :).

Feeling a little off today so I’ve had a little coconut oil and a few olives. Still feeling a little cold, I thnk I need to up the electrolytes. And go sit in the sun…

(KCKO, KCFO 🥥) #53

Never hurts to do any of that. I don’t eat the olives, but I have sipped at the brine. And sitting in the sun is always a great thing to do.

Back to my 2011 weight! From May 23rd 2010 to May 23rd 2011, I went from 281 pounds to 203 pounds - exactly one calendar year. Since then I have kept it off for the most part - the lowest I got was 195 in 2013. The highest I went back up to was 225 in mid March 2017. Since I’ve adopted fasting into my routine, I’ve dropped 22 pounds, about 15 of that within the last 30 days. Today I am back at 203, and am ready to get back under 200 again  I am really feeling good and am ready to make new headway!

(Mike Glasbrener) #55

I guess I’m in… I did a 36hr fast last week. That went well… I’ll shoot for 60 this week. I’m about 20 hrs in so far and feeling good.

Broke my fast this AM, did the 84 hrs. I started doing these extended fasts 5/24. Since then I have reached my goal weight and gone lower, I have lost 7.8 lbs as of today. I am at a weight I haven’t seen since 1988. In the past to loss 7.8 lbs would take me about 4 months while no where near my goal weight, I know now I can loss when I am close to my goal weight. So I am pretty happy with these results. Wish I had found out about this WOE sooner, but hey, I am doing it now and that is the important part.

LCHF=Low Carb Happy Fasting.

I am really enjoying doing my routine - three 42 hour fasts a week. For example, done eating by 8pm on Sunday night, fast all of Monday, and break the fast at 42 hours at 2pm on Tuesday. I eat until satiated (low sugar) on Tuesday evening and then start again - fast all Wednesday and break fast on Thursday at around 2pm. Fast all day Friday until Saturday around 2pm, and enjoy the rest of the weekend with normal eating.

(Mike Glasbrener) #58

Almost 44hrs in and feeling pretty good. This is my 2nd fast over 24hrs. Even having water at “family meals”. Himalayan salt and multi vitamin and magnesium. I also “cheat” by having americano in the morning with a dash of HWC. I doubt that provokes much of an insulin response. I’ll definitely make it till tomorrow morning. I guess at some point hunger or feeling bad will kick in… just not yet… I’m psyched.

(Jessika Nilsson) #59

I started an extended fast today after a late breakfast, aiming for 72 hours or more. I’ll probably break it on Wednesday at 1130 when I’m supposed to join a ‘team-lunch’

(Kevin Takahashi) #60

Hey y’all, checking in …

Same plan this week : ~110 hours fasting, followed by ~58 hours fed.

Currently ~32 hours into the fast, and feelin’ fine!
