Anyone up for some weekly fasting support?

I decided to eat today and start my fast after the PM meal. Friday is our official 25th anniversary and DH wants to go out to a nice dinner. I’ll fast 3 days so I can have that celebration meal with him.

Got to fit all this stuff into my life.

Happy fasting everyone.

As far as my projected start date goes, I’m playing it by ear. The work project I was hoping would be done by the end of this week likely won’t be done til the end of June, so I’m just seeing how I feel.
On the brightside, the levothyroxine my new doctor put me seems to be helping greatly, so I may decide I can handle fasting under stress after all and start next week anyway, maybe this week, even. But we’ll see

Started 5pm last night going for 72. Wed dinner.
Do the benefits of fasting increase the longer the fast?
If so whats a good fasting timeframe?
what are the real benefits aside from weight loss?

(Tina ) #24

108 hours straight?

(Tina ) #25

I’m just reading through the thread and am in awe. 90+ hour fasts? I think I would die! What? How? I’m new to this, so I’m not going to ask any stupid questions- but WOW you guys have some will power!
Im going to research this and will come back later… and maybe will join you - but I don’t know if i would survive.

(Nathanael Schulte) #26

I think it depends on the person, but I think one of the points is that your body needs the disruption to get through plateaus sometimes, whether that’s a weight loss plateau or an insulin level plateau. In my case, I think both are going on in my case.

(Nathanael Schulte) #27

It’s not a myth, once you’re into day 4, you usually turn the corner and you could probably go 30 days as easily as 5, at least physically

(Tina ) #28

For 30 days, you eat nothing?

(Jeff Davis) #29

Starting this evening and planning to go about 42 hours, to Wednesday lunch.

(James storie) #30

What dose of levothyroxin are you on? I take 175, but I don’t have a thyroid anymore (Grave’s Disease)

(James storie) #31

Once you are fat adapted it isn’t that hard! Your body becomes so efficient with your fat stores that you feel no hunger. The hard part is getting your mind to play along! I’ve never done 30 days, my longest is 7.

Hey Tina, yes 108 hours straight. Whadda ya know … I’m at about the halfway point (54 hours) as I’m replying.

Please don’t feel overwhelmed - it’s a skill that has to be learned, and everyone will learn at a different pace. Some may even learn it’s not a thing for them.

A couple of years ago, I couldn’t have imagined I’d be doing 5+ day fasts either.

I have found that once I was off the sugar train, intermittent fasting became relatively easy - the first couple of IFs were tough, but that was as much mental as physical. Then, as I saw success, I became very interested in testing my boundaries.

That being said, I go into these prepared (staying hydrated, ensuring I’m getting sufficient electrolytes), and (to paraphrase Dr. Jason Fung), if all seems wrong, I can just eat.

I had intended to start this 5:2 approach last week, but my weekend got shuffled around, and I didn’t get my long run in until Sunday, which thus landed in my planned 5-day fasting window. Monday I was feeling just a little sluggish - nothing horrible, just felt like I was running at 90% of my usual self, and my evening workout felt a little tougher … so I had dinner. And second dinner, too. :joy:

Dinner : mixed greens salad w/ guac for dressing, and 2 pieces grilled salmon
Second Dinner : 20 roasted chicken wings w/ buffalo dip (butter + Frank’s Red Hot), and some leftover salad w/ anchovies

50mcg. I’ve been on higher doses of Armor thyroid in the past, but it’s been a couple years. I stopped when I stopped going to that particular doctor. There was a lot I liked about her, but she was expensive and was starting to push toward a carb heavier diet. She started displaying the China Study book prominently on her shelf as well, so I thought it was best to move on.

(James storie) #34

Yep, that’s the sign to run for the hills!

(Tina ) #35

I’m SO intrigued. I have only been doing the 16:8 fasts with no hunger at all, but I am ready to change it up. I really want to move my way to extended, I probably should try a 24 hour one and take it from there.

What is your reason for the extended fasts? What improvements do you see? You still exercise when fasting?
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

Tina :sunny:

(Nathanael Schulte) #36

In my case, I think I need it to get the insulin down low enough and long enough to really heal my insulin resistance. I find it no easier to get to the point of the worst hunger (day 2 or 3) and then stop, because in general, the best part is once you get past day 3.
Yes on the exercise, but same as with fasting in general, if you feel bad or weak, cut back, especially if you lift heavy things that require intense body control, like barbells, kettlebells or dumbbells.
You’ve actually got an advantage with human growth hormone when you’re fasting, so it’s a great time to exercise.

(Jeff Davis) #37

Fasted about 37.5 hours, will break around the 39 hour mark for a business lunch. IF (20/4 or so) the rest of the week.

(Nathanael Schulte) #38

Not sure entirely why (maybe it’s the thyroid meds), but the past few days, I’ve been much less hungry. I spontaneously skipped lunch on Friday, and yesteday, I had dinner, but I could have skipped. I’m just not as hungry and I’m full longer. I might just see how I do for a while today. I had a small breakfast and some coffee with heavy cream. Maybe I’ll just slip right into a fast

(Izabela Vlahu) #39

Just a note on your fasting plan, the first 3 days are the hardest. Breaking your fast every 2-3 days will mean you are torturing yourself  Maybe you should consider a week of fasting, and then start an intermittent fasting plan (say 24h fasts where you eat only one meal a day at the same time, or eating every other day for a 48 fast). Anyway, whatever you choose to do, I’ll join the fast.

(Nathanael Schulte) #40

Not sure if you were addressing me, but agreed - that’s why I was personally aiming for eating 1-2 days per week and fasting 5-6 days in between. I could call it my OMAW (One Meal a Week) plan
