Accidental EF

Over 40hrs now, had dinner around 19.30hr on Sun and it’s now 13.30hrs Tue, keep thinking that I should have yesterday’s lunch (salad) before it goes off, but just not hungry. I’ve had my requisite 2 diet cokes each morning, then just water and a pinch of salt. I presume my body will tell me when it actually needs some food so just going to see how long this goes on.

Any tips for if I continue for a while would be welcome.

Nice, Ellen. :slightly_smiling_face: Sometimes the best parties are spontaneous.

Sounds to me like you are in a good zone and that you have a good handle on the situation. Patience will be rewarded!

(Ellen) #3

Thanks Doug :grinning: it’s so weird not being hungry for this length of time, a couple of months ago I’d have been crawling the walls and eating anything within reach after even 12hrs!

(Doug) #4

Yes, it is much different! And you have extra time due to not eating or making food - plenty of time for the mind to try and play tricks. Being busy with other things really helps me.

(1) Buy some Beef Broth at the store or make some yourself.

(2) Oxo, Knorr, etc all make 10 calorie (mostly fat) instant beef (or chicken) broth in a small packet (You can get cubes but the packets are handy). The packs come in high and low sodium versions. After 5 days of fasting I got “burned out” of the high sodium ones.

(3) If you do eat a bit, try to make it fat.

(4) Keep busy !!!

(5) Go for a leisurely 22 min walk if you get a hunger craving. Walk 11 minutes away from the fridge and then come home. After that, you wont be hungry.

I made it to 7 days my first unprepared fast

(6) I say your fast isn’t over if you just have cream in coffee. I’ve had coffee every day for 30 years, only having missed about 15-20 days.

(7)Go to a low intensity Yoga class.

(8) Learn to meditate, get some audiobook or stream some YouTube video feel your body. Feel the hunger, breathe some air, control your hunger.

(9) Drink some water. When you pee it out, you’ll be peeing out toxins.

(10) Day 2 can be hard. It wasn’t for me. The longer you fast the easier it is.

Rinse and repeat.

Good luck !!

Great advice, thanks. I’ll look out for some of those broth packets.

Here is one I got.
From Walmart.

Order some ketone strips online. See how purple you can get the strips  I found it satisfying to see my strips get darker. YMMV.

I almost started a new fast yesterday but I ate some meat last night. I am going to start another fast soon.

I bought Dr. Fung’s book
https://www.amazon.ca/Complete-Guide-Fasting-Intermittent-Alternate-Day/dp/1628600012
At Day 5 of my first fast, it didn’t help but I am reading it here and there now. Great book but you don’t need it now.

If your energy gets too high wake up early, get some stuff done early, feel good, have some broth and get your day going !!

I’ll check out Asda for those, I’m one of those that will happily drink a mug of beef gravy / broth, much better than tea/coffee! I’ve got some ketostix, hoping that this fast might push me from medium to high :grinning:

Oh it will … My strips were so purple they looked black. I took some strip selfies I loved it so much. I look back at those purple ketone strips like great old photos of my kids – oh the memories ! “Good Times”.

That is my good luck PURPLE heart. You know, like your ketone strips will be.
:+1:

Just beware, real high keytones is a sign of dehydration. Make sure to get your water and salt in!!

ketones-millimolar

(Ellen) #13

Thanks Jennifer, after my morning diet cokes I drink loads of water, probably 2.5 - 3l and “snack” on salt through the day.

Changes in urine concentration and colour will also occur.

If your pee gets dark when fasting, drink more.

Is that chart for urine ketones or blood ketones ?

I like that !

(Jennifer) #15

I think blood - the urine strips are not very accurate. Especially after time - your body gets better at conserving ketones and you don’t spill as many in the urine.

(VLC.MD) #16

hmmm. ive heard that a few times.
I wonder what exactly changes in the body that make it spill less ketones to the urine.

I fasted for a week and my ketone strips was very dark purple.
I loved it.

(Jennifer) #17

I guess the hypothesis is that the body “remembers” how to utilize ketones once insulin is reduced and gets better at producing them on demand. But, I’m not a doctor and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Not sure if @richard can reference any of the science?

I only use the organic bone broth when fasting. Check for additives and chemicals. You could try shiritaki noodles in the broth which have no calories. I stop all broth after the second day as there is a theory from Fung, that protein can stop autophagy.

Add magnesium chelate and possibly potassium and calcium

(Ellen) #19

Thanks for that, I’m hoping to get to the point of doing planned fasts for autophagy so that’s good to know.

Ellen,

Hey me too! I ate last Sunday evening and other than coffee & salt nada. I am upset that our company is having a smoked brisket ( the guy saves me the fattest parts! nom nom) on Thursday otherwise I would go into Saturday. As it is, I’ll eat Thursday and fast again 36 hours or so on the weekend.

I use two signs. If my salt has iodine and my hands are still cold then I eat. Second, if my thoughts are all directed towards food such as upon awakening for too long or I obsess over co-workers lunch then I eat.
