Accidental EF

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #21

You really know you’re a ketoer when you find yourself fasting by mistake! :joy:

When you fast, FAST. Don’t just take little bits here, and little bits there. That’s just starving yourself and won’t give you any benefits of fasting besides possible weight loss. Try water and black coffee only and see how you feel. Just remember any calories consumed breaks autophagy.

@Elle79 Currently passing 60 hours…you? I have slight hunger impulses but a dab of salt pushed those back. I relistened to salt fix podcast on 2KD and the guest said salt could send signals to decrease hunger, confirming Megan Ramos suggestion that it would do so. It does. I am about 32 hours from my goal.
I also like the depth of my taste buds towards my coffee. I buy from a local roaster and the taste grows during fasts. I can notice more delicate flavors that seem to elude me when eating.
I did physical labor all day yesterday plus completed my lifting routine. I have dropped 5 lbs since Sunday.

Noted thanks Mike :grinning:

@marklifestyle Go you! I gave in to the psychological dinner time last night and had a cheese burger, but had hit 48hrs, not eaten since and not hungry so might end up doing another 48hrs or more again straight away. Definitely something I think I’ll be doing more of.

Source ?

Will 10 calories of instant bone broth do that ?

I think encouraging people to not consume any calories is a good idea. But I’ll say I would be surprised to hear 10 fat calories changes much.

Dr. Fung regularly (and repeatedly) says not to worry about any calories under 50.

He’s not saying to eat up to 50 calories, just that we shouldn’t stress out if we need to eat some jello or bone broth or have something small in order to continue a long fast, he says that compliance is more important that perfection and it makes sense.

Consider this (mental exercise here, making up numbers) you fast for 72 hours, nothing but water/salt/coffee, you’ve already done a lot of “work” to effect metabolic changes such as improved insulin response when you do start eating again. If, on the 4th morning you have some heavy cream in your coffee and don’t have anything else for the rest of the day, did you really do much “damage” to your long fast? Let’s say you wait to have anything else (other than the black coffee/salt/supplements) until the next morning, effectively going another 24 hours of “true fasting”, doesn’t that provide benefit? I’d say it certainly does, how do we know, the positive response seen when using an intermittent fast (using a short eating window, maybe eating for 4 hours, fasting for 20…).

Now, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, and others, state that having ANYTHING other than water, “breaks the fast”. She’s not overly dogmatic about it and doesn’t disparage having black coffee etc. just states that when doing an IF etc. consider your fast broken at your first “non-water” intake. I think that’s a bit much, especially when fasting often/for long periods.

So, calories might break autophagy BUT, if you are already doing a long fast, you’ll probably resume autophagy at some point, and it will happen MUCH faster since you are already in a calorie reduced state.

Thanks Biff, somethings to think about there. Wow, I can’t even think of a 20 day fast (or 38 for that matter) just yet, I’ve done 48hrs and plan to work up a bit from that, but you sound pretty hardcore!

Makes sense.
Helps with KCFO.

True words! 2 months ago I’d have laughed in your face if you said I could accidentally not eat for 2 days!
