Accidental cheese oobleck

(Tom) #1

Hey gang,

I was in the mood for cheese steak of sorts this evening, but lacking the proper ingredients, I faked a cheese sauce. Not only was it tasty, it also happened to mimic oobleck, the famed non-newtonian fluid we played with as kids.
Just in case anyone felt like experimenting, here’s what I used:
A couple handfuls Mexican shredded cheese
A large dollop of mayo (I used Just Mayo)
A couple spoonfuls of sour cream
A splash of heavy cream
Black and cayenne Pepper to taste.

Even my non-keto girlfriend was impressed with how it turned out, especially without any sodium citrate!

Throw a handful of sauteed mushrooms on there and keep it warm, I’ll be right over…

Looks delicious. Excellent work!

That does look good! But do tell more about oobleck!

Oobleck is a substance made out of (IIRC) cornstarch and water. It’s a non-newtonian fluid, meaning it acts differently depending on the forces used against it. For instance, you can grab a handful of the stuff and squeeze tightly, and it’ll seem hard and rubbery. But, if you relax your hand, it’ll ooze right out between your fingers, and somewhat quickly, too. It’s actually a lot of fun.

There are a lot of different videos w/ oobleck on youtube, but I couldn’t pick one to share here.
