A little freaked out

(cheryl) #1

HI Guys,

So having an odd experience. I think I must of hit the “sweet spot” – I’m not hungry. I mean… my appetite was decreased recently but not hungry at all.

I did not have breakfast. And then I did get some hunger around 1 today. So I had a small salad with some egg and chicken. With blue cheese dressing. I felt rather full after eating that.

So, it’s so odd to not be hungry and it’s around dinner time.

It kind of freaks me out a little.

I know I’m no where near eating a normal amount of calories… But it’s sort of feels weird?

I took my keytones and I’m at 1.5.

Ideas, thoughts? What is your experience with this?

Also, is it ok to only consume 500 or so calories? I thought this is bad? Just makes me nervous.

Thanks!

I’d say you are well on your way, enjoy the ride! This is how normal people live! :+1:

Congrats! You are now fat adapted and in control of your diet!

It’s a bizarre experience if you’ve been eating carbs most of your life. It’s also why people who eat carbs could never even conceive of missing a meal much less fasting.

omg… .it’s really freaky! It feels not normal! lol

It’s normal. The first time it feels weird though. It’s really liberating to have control of your appetite.:+1:

I’m 43 hours water fasting and I lifted heavy today and it still freaks me out after 2 years of fasting that I can go a few hours without ever thinking about food.

Don’t worry, your hunger will come back, it just won’t be in control anymore.

Transformational.

It is weird is it not. I have experienced this at times and then the hunger has come back but not so bad. I find it really strange not to eat, and to not be driven t eat too.

It is ok that you are not near your normal amount of calories. It seems that you have become fat adapted - you body is burning fat for fuel and is also accessing your own stored fat for energy- hence you are not running out of energy- therefore not hungry!!

So yes it is ok to consume 500 or so calories if you are not hungry, after a month of this perhaps you can be concerned but for not- if you are not hungry - don’t eat and if you don’t feel like eating heaps. Don’t! Your body has access to lots of energy from your fat stores (the food you ate years ago). If your body needs more energy it will tell you with more hunger etc.

This does not mean it does not feel very, very strange. Especially for someone who has eaten often and planned the next food event for most of their life it can be weird to not want to eat. I found I needed to occupy and entertain myself in new ways to fill the eating gap. Walk anyone? Podcasts? Get stuck into work or a book.

It’s the new normal and you’ll adjust.

I have been feeling the same way. Yesterday I was 1100 calories under budget and I wasn’t hungry for anything. I looked right at a tin full of truffles at work and didn’t even want a single one. I don’t think eating only 500 calories from time to time is bad at all. Basically like you are intermittent fasting.

I understand and have not felt hunger since going IF/EF Keto myself

But your on a slippery slope and run the risk of going into starvation mode

I have used my not feeling hunger to my advantage and eat IF(OMAD) and short EF(48 hours)

My one meal a day (OMAD) consists of 2000 to 2500 kcals low carb moderate protein and fat to satiety :bacon:

My 48 hour fasts are water/sugar free flavored drink only

I have researched and found women do better in a calorie range of 1500 to 2000 kcals

When women go below 1500 kcals they tend to go īnto starvation mode :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

If you don’t feel hungry do IF(OMAD) 1500 kcals or water fast for the day or two or even three but I don’t recommend longer until you have done a couple of months of short EF and IF/OMAD.

IF(OMAD)/EF(48-72hours) will prevent you from going into starvation mode where as low calorie (below 1500 Kcal) will most likely put you in starvation mode

“May the Force (fat adaption) be with you”

IF/EF Keto WOE is Self-Discovery

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE

This is untrue.
There is no science on this.

Calories are not counted on a ketogenic diet.

Low carb, moderate protein, high fat. I can eat THOUSANDS of calories of fat and still maintain or lose weight. So do many on keto. It’s not unusual for me to eat 200 to 250 grams of fat some days, though most days are around 150 for me personally to be satiated.

Again, show me the science. Sounds more like assumption or dogma. No personal offense. I used to believe this too.

That’s funny I count calories (to make sure they are not to low) and I’m on a ketogenic WOE

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #15

you can certainly count them if you want to but it’s not necessary on a ketogenic diet. You can insure ketosis with 20 grams of carbohydrate, moderate protein, and fat to satiety. Most of us choose not to complicate things further.

it’s just really silly to warn someone that they’re at risk to go into starvation mode when they are just reporting one day where they weren’t hungry. it’s common on the ketogenic diet to have days where we’re not hungry.

we are only supposed to eat when we’re hungry we’re not supposed to force food .

No reason to panic anyone and start tossing around starvation mode and a slowing metabolism.

Relax everything is fine kcko

(Dan Dan) #17

Counting is not complicated at all once you how many calories are in each type of food. And my only concern is not enough food so I don’t trigger starvation mode (slowing metabolism).

I agree and quote this often but I am still cautious of Under-eating since I rarely experience physical or mental hunger since going IF/EF keto WOE.

@Brenda thank you for all you do for us. As for myself I had all but given up until I found this forum while researching how to get my health back.

I made it to 43 hours one time but I let my head and boredom get in my way…am going to go for it again and know to push thru it

(Melanie Phelps) #19

I do 24 hour fasts most days…

“Starvation Mode” is another one of those topics that has been debated for decades. For me, I was taking part in it some 15 years ago. Here’s my opinion, for what it’s worth.

The causes of SM are very subjective. Big surprise, huh? It appears to me that one of the major factors is activity. A heavy training athlete following keto is more likely to experience it than someone who is not training. That’s why the original keto guidelines suggested only a 500 Cal per day deficit, and were essentially dealing with bodybuilders who typically didn’t have a high degree of metabolic derangement. They were already used to cutting, but following Carb based semi starvation. I have a hard time believing a non active person would experience it in any real noticeable way, as if noticeable effect were felt, it would be easy to restrict activity and mitigate effects. I think also there is a genetic component, with those with a lower myostatin response being more susceptable, as the body tries to hold onto muscle mass.
