2018 Lenten Fasting

On day two of my fast for this week. I started after dinner Sunday night and hope to go for 4 days/4 nights, breaking the fast for dinner Thursday night.

The fourth week in a row I am doing a fast, 3 day, 2 day, 3 day, and this week. Going pretty good so far. I don’t think I will ever love fasting like some claim they do, but I do see it as an important tool to losing weight and for remaining in ketosis in the maintenance phase (ie. rest of life).

Hey y’all,

I had to curtail the fasting for several days due to the personal situation I’ve mentioned a few times before becoming, quite frankly, dire and my anger about it. Fasting on top of all that just felt like punishment, not control. But <big, hopeful sigh> it appears things are hopefully beginning to ease up a bit since late yesterday afternoon. One day I’ll put it all in writing for all my friends here on the forums to read. Y’all would be angry, too.

Anyway, I’m starting back fasting tonight. I’ll be taking it an hour at a time, unfortunately, until things ease up more, but I’m doing my best.

So glad to have y’all here with me and to have y’all’s support!

Thanks for the encouragement, @gatita and @avocadosrule. I don’t think I’ve yet figured out how flying across two time zones impacts my keto adapted woe. Thought I had it, since I had managed a very successful 46 hr fast on a business trip before, but that was a driving trip. Wondering if flying makes a difference. So much to learn, but SO glad that I have the wisdom and encouragement of this group to keep me motivated to keep learning. On a plane now, so … wish me luck! :small_airplane:

Sorry for your tough situation! Yes, fasting while under stress can add significantly to the stress! Be good to yourself and I like the hour-at-a-time approach!

Yes, we are all learning all the time. I think fasting during travel would be tough. I think fasting is pretty tough - period!

Day 3 of 33 day fast. Did great again yesterday. Really feeling the hunger. Trouble sleeping but sticking with it. Lot’s of water and walking.

#207

Almost wrapping up Day 3 of fast. Today was better than yesterday. Did a mild workout and got that bit of a natural ‘high.’ Makes me think, at times, I could go much longer. Had some HWC in coffee, and some pickle juice and salt. Maybe I can reframe my fasts as more pleasurable. A challenge!

Am getting slight tunnel vision for looking at recipes. But will keep on going and see where it takes me!

Great update! You will find that each day becomes easier. I am reassessing my decision to do 3-day fasts all these weeks in a row - have the worst days each time I start a fast.

The tunnel vision does not go away but if you stay strong and find other things to distract you from the food porn you will be able to keep going easily.

I am on day 2, 39 hours fasted, and feeling great! I mentioned yesterday that I was questioning my decision to do 7 3-day fasts as the first couple of days are always the hardest.

Actually this fast was pretty easy to start although I am just into the second day. As they say “Fasting gets easier with practice!”

Or as Jimmy Moore says “I am exercising my fasting muscle.”

It just seems that this week’s fast is going really well.

Awesome @ron-coleman! Fasts feel so variable so I am happy you’re back on the horse! It does seem, overall, they get easier with practice. Practice, for me, makes better (I will not say perfect)! Still, a day sometimes feels very long, or an hour or a minute when thoughts come to food or the lack thereof or something related.

I am still doing good on day 4. I anticipate I will break the fast tomorrow for dinner - so 5 days unless something happens. Not bad!

I have been taking the pink salt straight with fizzy water. Big change from last year when I tried to get salt in me through various odd methods. Then soy sauce. Now maybe pink salt straight ain’t that bad after all. This NSV is up there with changing taste buds and eliminating sugar from coffee. Something I never anticipated. Or like fasting. Who knew! Or a little mindfulness. Who knew! What is next? :see_no_evil:

Tonight I’ll be marinating spicy Thai pork for tomorrow! Anticipation!

I’m on Day 2 of IFing for this week – doing about 20 hours fasting each day. It’s gone pretty easy this week!

I get a bit hungry every day around 2 or 3 pm, but it passes pretty quick. My eating window officially starts at 5, but it usually passes without me noticing.

#212

Day 3 of IFing this week. Had a stressful morning and wanted to say screw it – but I didn’t. Now I’m off to a lunch meeting and am going to ask to take my lunch to go and save for later.

(Pascal Menezes) #213

I did not fast last week except the whole of Friday, over 32 hours! due to dinner invitations which I could not refuse.
I continue to keep a note of all the meals that I skipped to estimate my alms giving and fulfill my Lenten obligation.

Well I broke my fast at the 84 hour mark! I felt really good but had my usual chills the 2nd and 3rd days. Increased my salt and was able to make it through, I will try a bit more activity next week to see how that goes.

This coming week I have a business trip to Chicago and Madison, WI, and do not know what will happen then. A couple of weeks ago, on a trip, I did eat a really nice stea at dinner and it felt great. I will consider that for this trip as it is Wednesday-Saturday.

I’ve noticed that a 3-day fast tends to stop peristalsis and when I break the fast I get flushed out very thoroughly. May have to take it easy as my trip is going through most of Saturday as well!

#215

Broke my fast after 4.5 days. Meant to go for 5 but was making this delicious chia seed chocolate & peanut butter pudding and entirely forgot about my fast! Oooopsie. Can’t say I entirely regret it. Had delicious Thai pork salad at night. Like to start another fast soon, maybe Sunday or Monday night. We shall see. This fast was the easiest yet.

#216

I’m still dealing with the massive crapfest personal situation, which is dragging on interminably and is just getting worse and worse and more and more stressful, so I haven’t successfully fasted at all this week. Haven’t fallen off the Keto wagon, though, so that’s good.

Will try a fat fast starting Tuesday and see how it goes.

Until then, KCKO & KCFO!

(Replying to my first update to keep all my stuff together.)

Although I am fasting for the 40 days of Lent, that does not include Sundays, when I will eat.

Therefore my “fasting for Lent” is really five 6 day fasts (and eating on Sundays) bookended by two 4 day fasts.

  • One 4 day fast (Ash Wed-Sat)
  • Five 6 day fasts (Mon-Sat)
  • One 4 day fast (Mon-Thur)

Also, for context, I am doing a “Water” only fast that includes:
Black coffee in the AM.
My homemade zero calorie/zero carb Ketorade (Kroger brand vitamin water enhancer + 1 teaspoon Lite Salt)
Water.

In addition to the sodium and potassium in the Ketorade I am also taking a daily magnesium and calcium supplement.

(Updates newest to oldest)

2nd 6 Day Fast (2/26-3/4)

  • I weighed in on Sunday morning at 186.8 for a weekly loss of 6 pounds and a total loss of 16.4 pounds.
  • According to Vora, I fasted for 156.25 hours.

  • According to MFP, I ate 3354 calories and 33 Net Carbs. (I actually had less carbs as only one of my In and Out Double Double Protein Style had their sauce. I could not reflect that easily in MFP.) This is the most calories I have had on a Sunday, but it was my birthday weekend and birthday meal. That and I indulged in TWO bags of pork rinds…

2018-03-05_13-37-27

  • Monday I did a 53 minute/3 mile neighborhood hike. According to MFP that short hike burned 255 calories.
  • Tuesday was the first “hard” day of this year’s Lent fast. My wife and I went to Alamo Drafthouse to see Black Panther. My wife’s popcorn wasn’t really hard or a temptation, but all the other smells (!) really got my appetite going. This was the first time my appetite got the best of me. I did not cheat/break my fast, but it was the first time that fasting this Lenten season was hard on me.
  • Wednesday I did a 44 minute/2 mile neighborhood hike. According to MFP that short hike burned 212 calories.
  • Saturday I did a casual 1 mile neighborhood walk. Did not track in MFP.
  • I did have ONE SMALL cappuccino with Heavy Cream. Yes, I know this technically/physically broke my fast (since it included heavy cream and had calories), but I am ok with this as it was part of a pre-fasting plan that my wife orchestrated for my birthday.

1st 6 Day Fast (2/19-2/24)

  • I weighed in on Saturday morning at 192.8 for a weekly loss of 6.0 pounds and a total loss of 10.4 pounds.
  • According to Vora I fasted for 153.5 hours.
  • According to MFP I ate 2139 calories (500 or so less than last Sunday) and 25 Net Carbs.
  • I weighed in on Saturday, instead of Sunday (before breaking my fast) because I went camping and hiking with my 17-year-old Boy Scout.
  • I hiked 7+ miles, fasted, and only broke my fast Sunday morning, as planned.
  • I did double down on the electrolytes.
  • Per the camping food picture I bought more than I ate. For lunch, I only had the salmon and avocado and didn’t touch the tuna. I also didn’t really eat the meat sticks. I only had two of the meat sticks as I just wasn’t feeling them. I also bought one extra bag of the salt and vinegar pork rinds (for a snack for Sunday night after my camping) that I ended up not snacking on.
  • According to MFP I burned over 2000 calories, fasted, on my 7.22-mile hike. NOTE: The time is an estimate just to get an idea of what. I did do this hike on the 6th day of this week’s fast.

1st 4 Day Fast (2/14-2/17)

  • Starting Weight on Ash Wednesday = 203.2.
  • I weighed in the Sunday morning at 198.8 for a loss of 4.4 pounds so far.
  • According to Vora I fasted for 104 hours.
  • According to MFP I ate 2651 calories and 28 Net Carbs.
  • I rarely had hunger pains or tummy growls. Overall it was fairly easy.
  • I officially started my next Lent fast today, but technically started last night between 9 and 10
  • PM.

Simon, it does not sound like you feel deprived at all! You’ve had some temptations, yes, my wife’s popcorn cooked with coconut oil does smell good but like you I can easily ignore it and continue on with my fast.

As I’ve said many times before it is the mental game that is most challenging! When you feel tempted do you feel any physical hunger as well or is it only that little devil on your shoulder whispering in your ear that “that looks good!”?

#219

36 hours into my next fast. Have little food fantasies but overall doing pretty good. Will break when I break.

(I am a Dog (Dog's eat until they burst!)) #220

Starting this week’s fast and leaving on a business trip. I am considering doing this week as 2 24-hour fasts as one meal a day (OMAD) and then 36 hours until I break it on Saturday.

I’m feeling really good and have no chills although I am heading to below freezing temperatures in Madison, Wisconsin.
