There’s a whole bunch of Keto hummus recipes on the web using pureed cauliflower instead of chick peas. Here’s one-
Wth?
They are, but you still have to count the carbs. When I started, I thought “great, peanut butter is keto.” Yeah, well, not with the amount I ate. You really have to count ALL carbs at first. I’m at nine months, and each day I have EITHER nuts, OR, berries, OR cheese. I concentrate on meat, mostly. And if you like mushrooms, they are the kings of keto. I just learned that, even though they are a good source of vitamin D, if you leave them out in the sun, they gather more.
He’s an expert, and a teddy bear! You’ll get used to him, and find yourself going to him for advice.
The Diet Doctor website (dietdoctor.com) has a lot great free content that is useful for beginners. There is a subscription level that gives you access to a lot of videos and they offer a free month if you want to check them out at some point, but it isn’t necessary.
My first week eating keto, I was getting 60 grams of net carbs a day. The second week, I got them down to 30. By the third week I was comfortably under 20 grams per day. It does get easier. I really like the Cronometer app for tracking foods.
Good luck! And welcome!
LOL
The dose makes the poison, right?
Also, Regina is my PR person, as I clearly need one
Tracking is a great way to learn about carb amounts in foods. I use and recommend this app/website as well.
One of the main reasons is that it has a tightly-controlled food database that will only be altered by the staff at the app dev company, not just any nuffie with a phone.
It’s also easy to add your own foods/recipes to, and if you subscribe, has awesome reporting functions.
Sasha, it seems odd (at least to me!) but you DO have to be careful with onions. 1 medium onion has ~10 g carbs (8 net). So if you’re figuring total carbs, if you eat one medium onion, that’s 1/2 your carbs for the day.
To each his own, but be aware so that somewhere down the road, you’re not wondering why you’re not in ketosis. Some people prefer to use onion power for seasoning and avoid the carbs completely.
I eat two thin slices of onion a day. Nobody eats an entire onion.
I so could eat a whole onion, beautifully sautéed with mushrooms. I miss onions.
Australian Prime Minister (at that point, no longer).
(Did I beat Safi to posting this? We shall see.)
@juice Aww that’s disappointing you choose to be so sassy. That can make someone who’s just starting out feel really bad. We are all learning at some point and I’d hope this group is here to be supportive and not snarky.
Awwww, that’s a shame you didn’t bother reading on through the thread because you were so excited about jumping in with your ever-so-righteous post.
Still, if that’s made you feel better about yourself, I guess that’s ANOTHER good thing I’ve achieved today!
I don’t think he comes across as snarky at all. We are reading someone’s text chat, it’s not hearing him speak. We all read things differently and get different outcomes. Juice has been on the forum awhile. I haven’t had many interactions with him, but I have read a lot of his posts. He is a very much say what he’s thinking and tell it as it is type of guy. He also has quite a sense of humor as you will see him regularly tease and banter with people ( and these people are aware and do so back with him). I think it’s being taken of out context of his Intentions of his posts. He’s just a matter of fact dude!
My mom would eat a sweet Vadalia onion like an apple. I think it partially came from being raised during the Great Depression. She would ocassionally eat an apple, core and all. No food went to waste in her household!
My father is decidedly less concerned by best before & use by dates that many folks
