Wth?

OK I’ll scratch hummus off the list. Not deleting onions! lol

Yes you have to make sure you count out everything. Read every label! If something says 4 ounces of meat per serving and it has 4 carbs and 2 fiber then you subtract the fiber from carbs to get 2 net carbs. Generally you stay at 20 net carbs or less. If that product has 12 ounces of meat and you eat it all. Your consuming 6g of net carbs out of your 20g net carbs. Thus leaving you with 14g net carbs!

Once you really go into keto your taste and appetite levels will automatically change massively.

“Healthy“ is in the eye the beholder. Depends who you ask, brown sugar drink makers, fast food pushers, big pharma dealers, advertisers? Western society’s idea of healthy is not the only one that ever existed. Hundreds of millions of people are obese, suffering from type to diabetes, dementia, etc etc how’s it going for them?

I structure my meal plan around meat and veggies, and eggs are a superfood which can’t be ignored. Berries and nuts can certainly be eaten but in moderation and it’s advisable to give them a break in the first few weeks.

Once you go into nutritional Ketosis you can add one fancy food a week and see how you go.

Most condiments are okay but sauces can get very complicated very quickly. The food industry seems to feel the urge to put sugar and wheat in everything.

If you are like most people trying to eat low-fat, limit the calories and pile on the carbs then with keton I reckon you will be gaining more food options and you will be losing. Or at least that’s how it panned out for me

I would also just like to suggest if you are past your two first weeks to get rid of snacking. All that snacking will make your insulin high every time you eat and make it harder for your body to access stored fat. Also just combine what you ate for snacks as a part of your meal. Remember you aren’t restricting calories especially at the beginning until you are fat adapted.

If you are in your first two weeks you are still dealing with carb withdrawal so don’t worry about it.

@Alex99 This is the first day in years I haven’t had a donut, flavored coffee, and soda, so yeah, for me, it is the healthiest day I’ve had in years. But I definitely hear what you’re saying and will try to work on cooling it with the Harissa sauce, and berries and nuts for now. @Iced, you’re probably right. I’ll try to scale back on the snacking. Thanks for the suggestion.

YAY!!!

You are off to a great start! Some of the seemingly not-supportive comments on this thread is due to lack of context. We don’t know where you are in your journey, what your goals are or what info you are basing your choices on.

I LOVE hummus! But avoided it until on maintenance and not trying to lose fat.

What are your goals? People who have 15 lbs to lose have different issues from those with 115 to lose. Men seem to have it easier than women due to hormones (but not always). Age make a big difference.

Really there is nothing wrong with a few nuts and berries as long as they aren’t overconsumed which you hadn’t really done. If you LIKE pecans though I recommend them instead. They are way better on net carbs then almonds

Scaling back on snacking is great advice, but I’m getting that this was your first day, and no one really recommends that so soon. In a few weeks you will feel your hunger diminishing and that’s when it’s appropriate to really scale back how many times a day you are consuming calories.

(Sasha) #28

@Janie my goal is to lose 50lbs and then maintain. I was hoping this could be a lifestyle change, but I don’t know now. Feels like I’m giving up so much. Hummus too? Weeps.

(mole person) #29

Depending on how insulin resistant you are you may be able to do maintenance on keto with a fair bit more carbs. I’m in maintenance and am still in ketosis at 80 grams of carbs a day. I can’t LOSE weight at that level, so if I find myself gaining five pounds I have to tighten up again to lose them. But it does mean that most days I have a lot more leeway.

Even if you ARE very insulin resistant it still doesn’t mean you can never have a bit of hummus. It just means that you can’t have it as regular part of your diet. But, wait and see; what you want to eat changes. There are lots of good things that you get to have on keto that you couldn’t have before that more than make up for some of the things that are too carby.

Thank you @Ilana_Rose and everyone else, even you @juice. lol. I suppose I’ll get used to your blunt ways. I appreciate the feedback and honesty and encouragement. I’m really glad I found this forum.

Welcome to the group.

Oh, no worries, well it was all definitely a move in the right direction : - )

The thing is the fat-burning switch definitely acts like a switch, if you go a tiny bit over your personal carb limit (which might be 21g net carbs, 27 or 57g?) then insulin says “ok no more fat burning, stop fat burning. And all these carbs, convert them to new fat”.

Keto is amazing and it does work very well , for health reasons not just fat loss, but that 20g limit definitely needs addressing.

Cheers

Harissa is great: https://www.amazon.com/Piquant-Harissa-oz-Cans/dp/B00J5NT4KU

I’ve made a permanent lifestyle change at 14 months out and some concessions have been made. Everyone is different but I can eat beans and peas and hummus and fit it into my keto lifestyle. Not every day. And not even every week. But I do indulge and it has not hampered my journey. Not everyone can tolerate the higher carbs, even subtracting the fiber but I can manage.

Hi there, @GoKeto74. I am just reading your thread and understand the struggle, for sure.

When I started I used the induction for Atkins list of foods because I had it available to me and I didn’t eat nuts or berries because they weren’t on my lists. Where did you get your shopping list or list of low carb foods, out of curiosity?

(Sasha) #35

@PetaMarie I’ve been reading all of these different sites, and it seems like almonds and berries are on all of them. But I did download this Keto guide called The Ultimate Guide to Keto that said it was okay. There’s so much information out there, it’s a bit overwhelming and some of it is contradictory. Does this forum have a trusted websites and/or books list?

You know, just like the internet, you’ll get different views. I think no matter how you plan to track, have a way to look up anything you are thinking about putting in your mouth beforehand. I choose to carry a nutrition count book in my purse and just looked things up if the label wasn’t available. I also choose to just buy super low carb foods (meat, cheese, fats, low carb veg) and I stayed in the safe zone. I didn’t do nuts or berries and didn’t hit the cheese too hard at first. I stuck with meat, fish, veg, salad, eggs, bacon, etc. You can do a lot with just those things but there are plenty more.

(Janelle) #37

I eat onions in small quantities. I also have a pretty, digital kitchen scale for weighing out nuts. If I don’t, I misjudge how many I’m getting. Every once in awhile I’ll go on a “tracking tear” and I’ll track everything in my Lose It app. It just keeps me honest and lets me know what’s carby and not. For example, on my plan, berries are allowed but I treat them as dessert and only when I have carbs to spare.

(Carl Keller) #38

41 total carbs is still enough for nutritional ketosis. If you are looking for weight loss it’s a bit high but it’s still a lot healthier than most the world eats.

(Jill F.) #39

A lot of people just assume that eating healthy or low carb means no breads, pasta, or rice. Everything has calories except water, lol! Yes raspberries are healthy but if I eat a whole pint of them I may as well have had a large candy bar. Sugar is sugar.

Great day in comparison so try a few more in a row and see if you like the way you feel. I have not touched a chip, candy, soda, pasta, bread, rice, donut, anything in 6 weeks and I feel better than ever!
