Without Carbs you will die. Sugar is an essential nutrient. You need 53 essential nutrients

I’d assert that he has leptin resistance, leading to him being obese. Once leptin resistance occurs, caloric intake increases, chronic overcompensation of glycogen happens. Hyperinsulinemia ramps up due to increased increased cab intake and you develop insulin resistance and eventually diabetes.

Do you by chance work in healthcare? I do and am saddened by the amount of sheer crap foods that are snacked on throughout the day by people (mostly women) who deal with the stress of the job with these comfort foods.

My mother was in hospital for 9 weeks last year and I would be in every day (and twice or more when she tried to shuffle off this mortal coil :open_mouth:) and as she became an increasingly more objectionable patient, I felt I had to bribe the nurses more and more. I brought standard carby snacks and as the weeks went on I got special requests from various nurses who cared for mum. To a one, they were all for sweeter or saltier carbaceous snacks and even fruit was rejected. Sugar soda was preferred over diet.

I think it says a few things (that we already know).

  1. Healthcare professionals don’t understand nutrition
  2. It is a brutal life being a nurse (in the UK) on near to minimum wage and 12hr shifts
  3. When you’re young you don’t worry about this stuff but it sets up bad habits for when you are old (since all ages were pretty much aligned in their preferences)

At the time I had nothing but love for the nurses… now I still have that but tinged with a little sadness for what I know now.

I never buy the cheap commercial foods for my cats. 80% plus meat varieties only. When I first got them from the rescue centre they had streaming eyes and noses (was told it was cat flu), bloated stomaches and really runny poop plus their fur was looking the worse for wear. I changed them over as soon as possible to the food with most meat content I could find, interspersed with days of fresh fish, hicken, duck etc. Within a week their ‘flu’ symptoms had gone (and never returned in the four years I have had them), all digestive issues gone and coats looking beautifully healthy and glossy.

There was one point when I ended up having to give them some cheaper (albeit still 50% meat content) food for a couple of days and they simply turned their noses up at it, refused to eat it and fasted for a couple of days instead until they got their usual. They know what they want and I am following their lead

Plus their vet has commented on how health they both are and also about how calm and content they seem on their yearly health checkups which she says is unusual when cats visit a surgery.

I wasn’t sure where to put this so since my last GP tried to give me really :cow2::poop: nutritional advice I just stuck it here. It’s a facebook post I made… I don’t expect any recommendations.>

I’d like to find a local G.P. (like within an hour or so) that meets the following criteria:
a) Not a pharma cog (this will eliminate 90% probably more)
b) Not stuck in a 1950s I know everything attitude
c) Medical and scientific knowledge has progressed beyond the 1980s (this is hugely important)
d) Is willing to admit that he or she didn’t get any real nutritional training and doesn’t try to be a nutritionist. (if you can’t see your toes don’t try to tell me how to eat  you’ll get mocked and fired for that)
e) Understands my time is important. If you make me wait an unreasonable amount you’re fired.
f) Understands that he or she will be mocked relentlessly (and fired) if you try to intimidate me with that silly lab coat or stethoscope.

I don’t expect to find a single one sooo, if you think any are worth bothering to spend time on feel free to message me.
As you can tell, I don’t much care for them anymore.

Frankly I think more people should fire their doctors, maybe then we would see real change in our crappy sick-care system.

Oh yeah, I’m fine, I would just like a doc I can work with.

Just thought I’d mention this, since I happened to hit this page at random, and this is relevant.

I’ve been Keto for 8 months now. No kidney stones. This is the longest period in 16 years I have gone without a single stone. I’m guessing the processed carbs. Cereals, chips, etc. were the cause. Regardless, I’m very happy about it.

Yeah… It’s been over a year now for me. Every now and again I get a little funny twinge and I think could that be another?..nothing yet.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #131

Sheesh! Is your neighbor in perfect shape and health?

(Carolus Holman) #132

Thinks he is. He’s 6ft 4 and 230.

I am staying at an AirBnB this week that I stay at so much I am like family now :grinning: My host knows about my low-carb WOE and this trip he started telling me he decided to go low-carb also and was losing weight and felt good on it.

One of his other guests was a very overweight young man. After I left the room I heard him tell our host that “carbs are essential” and “you must eat them”. More brainwashing from the nutrition industry.

(Michele) #134

Bob - our 8 month ketoversary too! Still going strong. Going out for a steak to celebrate!

#135

@barefootbob I get it! I abandoned Allopathic medicine well over a decade ago for many of the reasons you give but also because I lost any appreciation for the medical school training and education. I think people go into medicine for very good reasons and with great interest in health but get that all taught out of them. After years of dedication and mountains of debt they go into our current healthcare system having alot of information with little knowledge.
I strongly advocate functional medicine, naturopathic, ayurvedic and yes medical intuitives with healing touch, craniosacral, myofacial, acupuncture…the possibilities are endless regarding healing and it is ours for the taking. Or is it?
So we arrive at a very complex issue of who has the money, the access, the information to create a positive life promoting health care. This gets into those who have and those who have not. I think this is where we could rant more…

(Lisa) #136

Hi,
I’m new to this group.
Boy do I hear you! I was out to dinner a month or two ago with friends and one told me I was full of the stuff that makes the grass green, eating this way. I was a bit shocked. She seemed truly angry at me. I ignored her. (am down lbs, am off all my diabetes meds so I’m happy and that’s all that matters).
Skip to last night. We all go out again. She approaches and says she owes me an apology after reading ‘real’ articles on Keto and I am right… shocker!! I then told her to go look up Keto and Alzheimers, Keto and Dementia, Keto and Diabetes…etc.
Lisa

(karen) #137

Yup. Met an overweight young woman at party who is a nurse and got extremely angry with me when I said that carbs are not an essential part of the human diet. (I didn’t say the body didn’t need any glucose, just that it could manufacture what it needed from protein and fat.) She also told me that ketosis is a dangerous and life threatening situation. (I guess someone has to be last in the class … ) :poop: storm indeed, you would have thought I’d ordered Her to back away from the pizza.

(Alec) #138

That’s a cracker… I love that! Some folks just don’t get it, do they?

(TJ Borden) #139

Yeah, funny how people mix up ketosis with ketoacidosis, and actually really don’t know what either are.

(karen) #140

Mmm hmm. I said oh, you mean ketoacidosis. She gave me an annoyed scowl and said yes, that’s the official scientific word for ketosis.

(TJ Borden) #141

:joy::joy::joy:

And

Twenty years ago, I think we could have forgiven medical professionals for not knowing this difference due to a lack of education about nutrition. Now, I just can’t anymore. There are no adequate excuses these days, and I believe the general ignorance on the topic is verging into violation of the first rule of medicine: Do no harm.
