What to eat on day 1

(Kaz) #1

I firstly apologies for my ignorance on the subject.
Family and friends getting into my head that what l am considering(eating Keto) is not only unhealthy, but extremely silly.
I am hoping for some encouragement & advice to prove the sceptics wrong, but even more so to prove to myself l can achieve amazing health results.
Being 56, having a hysterectomy late last year(after bad Pap smear results)
Now l am going through hot flashes, anxiety ect.
My Doctor wanted to prescribe hormone replacement treatment yesterday and antidepressants. I am not depressed.
I want to go natural to find my way back to a healthy version of me.
So what do you suggest to eat on day one?
Any advice is welcomed.

In my opinion try in day one, as a discovery experiment, to eliminate all carbs and try from all meat and dairy products to find what you like most. Don’t restrict calories.
I would say eggs for sure, butter without bread, bacon, meat with lard. The next days make a plan with what foods low in carb to keep that respect the sub 20 grams a day carb rule and get used to high fat foods.
For me this was not a issue in the first days because I did not have problem to eat lard tablets as they are traditional foods, but my GF needed weks before she got used to the ideea that you can eat eggs and butter without bread.

If you want to go keto, you can’t do much better than start with bacon and eggs. There is a great version of keto which is eating just bacon and eggs (and nothing else!). The most important thing is to drop your carbs as low as you can (preferably to less than 20g per day). You will find this is very low, but that’s the point.

It is actually quite doable. You just cannot eat bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, corn etc, and especially not sugar. Eat meat and veg, preferably green leafy veg. And eggs, eat lots of eggs. Don’t worry about getting lean meat, get nice fatty meat, fattier the better.

Good luck.

Ok, we will see how that goes. Looking forward to reporting good news😊

Appreciate the comments, thanks heaps.

Can l still drink celery juice on a Keto diet?

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #6

Welcome. Can you drink celery juice? You have to ask yourself how many carbs are in it and does it fit into your daily carb allowance (whatever you choose for yourself.) If yes, then yes. I look at it like spending money. I allow myself 20 carbs a day so I am thoughtful about what I want to use those carbs on. I can save them up and use them all at dinner with a high carb veg or eat a few here and there throughout the day. I can drink them in my coffee with cream or eat them. You have to figure out what works for you.

My first day I stuck to meat, chicken broth, bacon, eggs, a bit of cheese (while learning the carb counts of each kind). I didn’t eat nuts or keto recipes for bread or treats. But I ate plenty and stayed full and enjoyed it!

Also, I was tossed into chemo induced menopause at 39 (I’m 43 now) and Estroven with black cohosh really helped with the hot flashes and night sweats. I don’t know if it helped with anxiety but since I panic when the heat starts, I’d say probably. It also helped me get some darn sleep. (Along with a spray bottle next to the bed and a window air conditioner.) I had it bad, all at once too. I also did not do HRT but I did do antidepressants (cancer is a bummer).

YES!! I drink it everyday, it’s an electrolyte supplement all on its own. Electroyles are something to watch on a keto diet.
The nutrients, natural sodium, and the energy you get from it are worth the 3 net carbs in 16 oz

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

The whole point of a well-formulated ketogenic diet is to lower blood glucose and insulin, and you do that by eating as little carbohydrate as possible. We recommend less than 20 g/day. This not only prevents the damage elevated levels fo glucose and insulin cause, but also allows excess stored fat to be metabolized for energy.

So the low-carb business is like 95%. The rest of a ketogenic diet is tweaks. For one thing, you need energy. Protein is not a good energy source, because it takes quite a bit of energy to break down amino acids and convert them into something metabolizable. That leaves fat, and we are fortunate that fat has almost no effect on insulin levels, making it the perfect thing to eat to replace the lost calories from cutting carbohydate.

Your protein is probably already at a healthy level, so just make sure to incorporate enough fat into your diet to satisfy your hunger—no more, no less. In other words, cook with butter, lard, tallow, ghee, coconut oil—things rich in saturated and monounsaturated fats. Avoid polyunsaturated fats. You need a small amount of ω-3 and ω-6, but too much of the latter causes inflammation.

Celery in its natural state has a lot of fiber, which, because of its indigestibility, many people don’t count toward their carb limit. But if you turn celery into juice, the fiber is destroyed in the process and becomes digestible, so it can no longer be safely subtracted from the carb count. (This is true of all juices, by the way.) So yes, you can drink it, but if you want to keep your insulin low, count all the carbohydrate, don’t subtract the fiber. (Or if you live in a country where fiber is already subtracted for you on the nutrition panel, be sure to add it back in.)

Thank goodness for that Melissa. Appreciate your reply

Your welcome @Livingdagoodliffe
No one can tell me I can’t eat all the veggies I want. My sanity and hormones thank me for it lol

(Kaz) #13

Melissa, just wondering what app you use to track you food intake?

(Jill F.) #14

Hi there @Livingdagoodliffe I am in my 40s and post menopausal. I take hormone shots and I have been very successful so far on keto. I am viewing it as a lifestyle change and I cant imagine going back to my old carb filled ways. Stick with meats, cheese, green veggies, bacon, eggs, as low carb as you can find peanut butter, sausage, butter, MCT oil powder, and more bacon :bacon::bacon::bacon:. Best wishes!

I use the cronometer app. I’d stick to,as whole foods as you can. If you have hormonal inbalance I would limit dairy.
