Welcome to the forums! A few thoughts. First off, don’t eat foods you hate - that will make keto a burden. Find foods you love that are keto-friendly.

I would start off at 20 or under grams of carbs. I would throw away the kisses, too. Later on you can have very dark chocolate, but not milk chocolate. Very important, make sure you are getting enough salt, and staying hydrated.

Forget about the scale for a while. Once you are eating strict keto you will initially lose quite a bit of water weight, later on the fat loss will begin. 9 days is way too early to panic! Please keep us posted and ask any questions that come to mind.

I’m new to Keto but I have seen some weight loss since starting. Perhaps try some testing to see if you are in ketosis yet.

Dale, unless you’re measuring all of your vegetables, you might be taking in more carbs than you think. Many times it’s recommended that you keep your carbs at <20 TOTAL carbs/day, so a lot of veggies will certainly bump you over that. And even though your Hershey’s kisses would have been about 5 g of carb, if you’re looking at total carbs, that was 25% of your daily carbs right there.

I second the “don’t eat what you hate” statement. There’s plenty of foods out there that are keto friendly that you should enjoy eating.

As for the scale gain…stay off the scale for a while. Depending on how and what you’re cooking, you could actually be retaining water (cheese tends to be salty). But also, keto doesn’t give you free rein to eat massive amounts of anything…so you might need to look at just how much of everything you’re eating.

I’ll just add that you should try to be patient Dale. Just focus on eating the right things and keep your carbs under 20. Women have it much more difficult than men and older folks have it much harder than younger ones. Often our hormones are deranged from eating poorly for decades so we can’t expect them to get it together in a few days. It takes time and for some, it takes more time than others.

Like @Regina says, find keto things you like to eat and don’t make keto a job. And @cw2001 's advice to stay off the scale is a good idea. Daily fluctuations from water loss and gain can range from 1-3 pounds on any given day so don’t panic and just keep eating right and good things should start to happen.

Cronometer.com is a great tool for making sure you stay under 20 carbs per day. There’s a ton more things it does but if you only use it to track your carbs, it will be worth your time and effort.

My thoughts are on the scale issue. Different people respond differently. I weigh myself every day I work on the shipping scale and always have since I started making changes in my life. What it says on the scale is what I weigh and that is what I track. Yeah, I might have been eating under my BRM and did good with my macros the last 2 days but it says I gained a pound… well, I gained a pound. When I feel I may have lost a pound and it says 2 pounds… It is what it is.

My wife on the other hand has done the scale yoyo over the years and refuses to weigh herself other than when she has too at doctors appointments.

If you are the type that is easily discouraged then maybe daily weighs aren’t for you. Maybe weekly are. I think it is important to track things though if you are actively watching progress.

Me too! And in three months I’ve lost 9 lbs but I’ve gone from a size 18 to a size 14 so I don’t even care about that ONE measurement when the other measurements and non scale victories (clearer skin, better sleep, better mood, more energy, less overall pain, eating less, hardly ever hungry, enjoying eating fat, etc) are so evident.

(Running from stupidity) #8

Exactly.

And given that “one measurement” has about 300 variables feeding into it…

Can you explain your drink liquid buter? Name thingy

(Glenda) #10

I like to have the data so I weigh daily, but if you do that it is a really good idea to use an app like happy scale (for iphone) or libra (for android) that takes averages of the weights and shows you your moving average. That way even if you go up a pound one day you can still see that the moving average is decreasing.

(Running from stupidity) #11

One of our resident trolls is insistent that everyone on this forum says that’s what we should do as part of doing keto (because it suits his “human biology and physics are the same damn science!” mania) so I’m just poking some fun at it, because it’s pretty obvious that we DON’T say that.

It’ll change in a few hours or so, I move them around a fair bit

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #12

Good point!

(Running from stupidity) #13

The trend is your friend!

The scale, OTOH, is a lying bitch.

(Glenda) #14

I can’t talk smack, she has been good to me lately and I don’t want to make her angry!

(Dale Carson) #15

Oh no just curious, made me go searching for liquid butter that is suposed to actualy be good for you, i didnt even know there was a thing, so i learned something new, all good

(Running from stupidity) #16

Of course you can, she’ll turn around in a day or two and whack you either way

(Running from stupidity) #18

I’ve now retired that one for a while, I’ve got plenty of others to use
